I once read you were considering Love Film... did you go through with it? I'm loving the streaming service (Animal Kingdom can be found there too).

Yeah I've been using it for a few months now, it's been really good aside from some problems getting them to cough up Amazon e-vouchers that they owe . The streaming service is great, streaming them through my BluRay player which couldn't be more convenient.

Finally, the new BBC Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia. Maybe not technically a movie(?), but I count it as one.

I was a little skeptical about what they'd done with Irene Adler(Polish primadona to Dominatrix... how?) based on what I had read before, but it all worked really well to me. Everything was brilliant, everyone was brilliant, I loved the whole thing, every moment of it. :worship::worship:

The very ending ruined it a little for me though (the very last 2,3 minutes). A little too OOC and cutesy for Sherlock imo.

The humour was fantastic, favourite exchange:

Sherlock: Please don't feel obliged to tell me that's remarkable or amazing, John's expressed that thought in every possible variant available in the English language.
Irene: I would have you right here on this desk until you begged for mercy twice.
Sherlock: I've never begged for mercy in my life.
Irene: Twice.
John: ...
:superlol:

Cut the last two and it's 88 minutes of perfection. :hearts: :inlove:

Had a double feature at the cinema today.

Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol was pretty much as expected. Bit of fun to see Tom Cruise kicking ass again and a couple of nice sequences.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - Complete pulp though very entertaining. Rooney Mara is good. I was just expecting something more from Fincher, a bit more atmosphere and tenison I guess. Cannot compare to Zodiac or Seven.

No need to be sorry, that seems to be the main cirticisim aimed at it. A lot of that has to do with expectations though, I'm sure many people were expecting a serial killer thriller in the mould of Seven.

I thought they were actually pretty good. Okay, it was for MMA fighting but definately better fight scenes than in the Fighter or other movies.

I wasn't really satisfied with the ending though, you didn't see if Tommy Riordan got a cut of the prize money to donate to the wife of his passed away marine buddy.

Tom Hardy is making a real name for himself though, next plans for me is to check out his Bronson movie. Heard that one was good as well.

Body of Lies - promising cast with diCaprio, Mark Strong and Crowe but the plot failed the movie (clichéd love story in the middle ). I can't believe Crowe put on 63 pounds for this role. It was solid at best but wouldn't recommend it.

Submarine - I've seen this sort of "coming of age, philosophical take on family crisis and depression" film before but thought this was very well done. Convincing performances all round.

I always love stuff of older decades so its ok for me. No offence to gay people, but strangely in my eyes, only Heath/Jake, Brain/Justin (the US tv show QAF) had chemicals between them and made a good couple for me, i don't feel comfortable for most others. Shining is a genuine masterpiece. I watched it at least 5 times. Are you aware of numerous subtexts in the movie, among other things it is about genocide of Indians in the US. That is why Lucey Duvalle looks so distinctly Indian (hair, braides, clothes) in the movie, with many clues and traces of Indian art and music. And this is just one level, there are more.

I know about the native thing going on there. Scary book and scary movie for sure. Not my favorite one from Kubrick, but a great film none the less.

The avatar I changed after I returned from an unfair ban, and some naively stupid pompous diva and her dim witted cronies were taking lame jabs at me. The Here's Johnny line was a perfect fit.

Of course people who know me know that I am as sweet as pie and nothing like the character.

I both love and despise this movie. I have such mixed feelings about it I even started an IMDB thread about it (for the first and only time in my movie-watching life) a while back. But despite all its flaws, one thing that cannot be overemphasized is the sheer talent of the two lead actors. Sbaraglia and Noriega are sensational, and should ideally be household names to anybody with more than a passing interest in movies.

great concept but the execution falls short. it lacks the humor, romance and dialogue of some of woody’s best work (i.e. mahattan, everyone says i love you, small time crooks), and the historical figures are reduced to bland, stereotyped caricatures. this is 2nd-rate woody.

great concept but the execution falls short. it lacks the humor, romance and dialogue of some of woody’s best work (i.e. mahattan, everyone says i love you, small time crooks), and the historical figures are reduced to bland, stereotyped caricatures. this is 2nd-rate woody.
C+

I read somewhere that it was intentional that the historical figures were caricatures because that's how we remember them(only a few snippets about them stay in our memory) but that point didn't get conveyed very well.

watched a fantastic documentary about the NYC Nightclub called Limelight

As the owner of legendary hotspots like The Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium, and Club USA, Peter Gatien was considered by many as the undisputed king of the 1980s New York City club scene. The Ontario native, whose trademark eye patch made him stand out in a crowd, built and oversaw a chain of nightclub ventures that brought thousands of patrons per night during its peak years. However, after years of legal battles and police pressure spearheaded by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's drive to crackdown on the city's nightlife scene during the mid-1990s, Gatien's was deportated to Canada, bringing an end to his presence and influence in the city's nightlife scene. The documentary features interviews with numerous people involved in the club's scene, as well as key informants in Gatien's high-profile trial. Produced by Gatien's daughter, Jen, and Alfred Spellman, and directed by Billy Corben (who previously directed the film "Cocaine Cowboys") the documentary documents the rise and fall of Gatien and his nightclub empire

It is a very sick story to start with, condensed in 2h20 that just fly by. Great acting from a very capable cast. Personally I was never a fan of films like Hostel, where the only purpose seemed to shock and make you feel sick just for the sake of it. Hostel, The Human Centipede and many Japanese slasher movies all fall into that category. The last shocking movie I've watched, "I spit on your grave", may be incredibly disturbing, but it carries a strong message, which was director's intention. Blood and gore just for the sake of it is pretty stupid.

Yes, I agree with you on all points although I have yet to see "I Spit on Your Grave", although I will put it on my list of movies I'd like to watch. Some "B" Movies can be riveting and fascinating, many times these are films that are very creative and original, and they can end up being masterpieces. This includes the "Exploitation" flick. I already listed that I enjoyed "Ms. 45" as an example. Also, some of them can be unintentionally hilarious because they are so off-the-wall absurd, that I find myself laughing my sides out (e.g. Ed Wood movies, Troll 2, etc.). A good thread on movies might be "Best 'B' or Exploitation Movies" or "Films so Bad They're Masterpieces". Even THESE movies can be redeemable in some way. But "gore" and "shock nauseating" as the ONLY thing for an "exploitation" film is just brutally disgusting...again it makes the viewer feel nasty for just watching it...

So yea, I know what you mean. I love "Cult" films, and even if I end up despising one, I'm glad that I at least gave it a try. There was so much buzz about "Hostel", that I thought I should give it try. Films that are gory and shocking in some manner don't have to be awful if they have something redeemable about them. I gave "Martyrs" a "B" because it also has a deep message, but it DOES go overboard on the "nausea" level. I do love the Evil Dead trilogy for example, and think they are brilliant, scary, funny...everything a great movie should be! :yeah: [REC} is also a great "B" movie (Spanish) that I recently saw. I would give that movie a solid "A".

I also will admit a guilty pleasure in finding the first two "SAW" movies as fascinatingly dark because there was suspense and amazing plot twists and an interesting protagonist. I watched a couple of the other sequels and they were awful though. I gave "Hostel" an "F" above though. There is NOTHING redeemable about this film. The acting is atrocious, the direction is bad, it made me feel filthy just watching it, the view of women is absurdly stupid and demeaning, and once I started to feel nauseous I turned it off which I rarely do. It isn't slightly funny in a bad way, just an obnoxious movie. But I may very well like "I Spit on Your Grave." I'll give it a shot. It sounds similar to "Ms. 45", an exploitation art film which also carried a strong message, and was fascinating because of the way it was directed. That film seems influenced by "Repulsion" by Polansky in my opinion.

I guess you saw Chinatown in the movie ending thread? Glad you enjoyed it. Might be my favorite film.

If you liked Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion, check out The Tenant. They form an unofficial trilogy.

"Chinatown" was just fantastic. I'll have to re access my favorite movie list after seeing that film and "Memento" the past week. Both of them completely absorbed me, and I had that rare feeling that I wanted to watch it again soon to catch all the subtleties that I know I missed. There was just so much to it... I was left in awe at the ending too. You were right....it gave me chills...

I will watch "The Tenant" next. Thank you for the tip. Rarely does a film get inside me like that. And seeing Jack Nicholson so young was a little mind blowing too. He was amazing in that film! :wavey:

I have just rewatched Kill Bill Vol.1 and I have to say it's an amazing movie. It's probably the only movie I really liked in the recent years, Tarantino has created something special. It was weird watching the fight in the The House of Blue Leaves in black and white though. Australian censorship is so bullshit, I was in Japan when I originally watched it and the scene was full color :yeah: Probably, you'd have to be a fan of old kung fu flicks to appreciate multiple homages Tarantino gives to that genre. I am going to be rewatching Vol2 this evening.

Streep was nominated for an Oscar, MacLaine for a BAFTA, both were nominated at the Golden Globes, a story by Carrie Fisher (from her own book), directed by Mike Nichols. Great little roles for Dennis Quaid, Gene Hackman, Richard Dreyfuss and Anette Benning.

This movie is full of wins.

Martha Marcy May Marlene - Enjoyed isn't exactly the right word, because it was a difficult watch. There were some great scenes in it, but the ambiguous ending left me annoyed. Great idea for a film, but it could have been even better.

Old Joy - got a bit bored in all honesty, surprising as I've liked the Kelly Reichardt films I've seen previously. The cinematography was great though.

A Separation - This was fantastic, really gripping. I loved the portrayal of the division in class, the importance of religion and frankly the human side of it too. I loved how each of characters each tell a pretty huge lie, and then you figure out that the director was lying to you as well

Yeah, I was kind of intrigued by the cult, and that scene near the end with them in the house  The ending also drove me crazy, can't stand ambiguous endings like that,.

Speaking of ambiguous endings, just re-watched this, love this film so much. I think the game ended in the concrete, the rest is just fantasy.

In the Electric Mist - Well carried by Tommy Lee Jones but sadly the plot and many of the peripheral characters are less than compelling. It does capture its rural Louisiana setting nicely though.

Take This Waltz - A fairly atypical portrayl of a marriage breaking down because of irrational discontent and the desire for someone else. More good work by Michelle Williams and a very likeable Seth Rogen. Recommended.

Prometheus - As a fan of Alien, with a pretty good grasp on its mythology, I enjoyed it. It expands on that mythology and leaves you wanting more. It's lovely to look at, as is Charlize in a skin tight uniform! It's ambitious with its themes and ideas, which are very prevalent, though I'm not sure how successful. Fassbender is very good as the android. It was a bit fast though, I felt some time to breathe was needed and there were a few moments I thought were overkill. There was potential for a great film here but it is still highly enjoyable, particularly if you like Alien/Aliens.
