So far I suppose I am the only, but hopefully he will get more as he aims to get into the top 100.

2 weeks ago he was number 202 in the world, in the space of that time he has moved up all the way to number 131 which makes it so exciting for him now.

In that time he has managed to gather these results:

FRENCH OPEN

Qualification round 1: beat Werner Eschauer (Aut) 6-4 6-1
Qualification round 2: beat Miguel Gallardo (Mex) 6-3 6-0
Qualification round 3: beat Marc Lopez (Spa) 6-4 3-6 7-5

Round 1: beat Dmitry Tursonov (Rus) 6-2 6-3 6-4
Round 2: beat Sebastien Grosjean (Fra, 10) 7-6 (6) 6-3 6-4
Round 3: Lost to Marat Safin (Rus, 20) 7-6(4) 4-6 6-3 5-7 5-7

SASSUOLO CHALLENGER $25,000

Starace was a wild card entry

Round 1: beat Arnaud Di Pasquale (Fra, WC) 6-3 6-4
Round 2: beat Diego Moyano (Arg) 6-2 6-3
Quarter Finals: beat Francesco Aldi (Ita) 6-1 6-3
Semi-Finals: beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (Spa, 4) 3-6 7-6(8) 7-6(2)
Final: beat Alessio Di Mauro (Ita, 3) 6-2 6-3

A great run in Roland Garros and winning the challenger in Italy have made for a grand couple of weeks for Starace where he has probably won mor emoney than in his lifetime.

This week he was expected to enter the challenger event in Lugano $50,000 but has pulled out due to the tiresome couple of weeks he has had.

You're not the only one, I 'discovered' him about 4 months ago, he plays at the same German tennisclub as Fred does, I let my eye fall on him when I was looking at pictures from that team. And with Fred playing a lot of challengers in Italy this year I began to follow Potito's results also :) .

You're right, it's Spanish. In Italian means Avanti.

I don't think Potito could even win the tournament, because at this moment Rogi Federer seems like Superman (probably he's the best player I have ever seen).

If Potito plays at his best, I think he has not more than the 5% of possibilities.

But you know, sometimes miracles happens...

Forza Potito, this was a great tournament for him to back up his supreme success at the French Open.

His tournament panned out by beating Sanchez, Hanescu and Novak (all of which are very good players, especially Sanchez and Novak) before losing to Federer in 3 sets.

This tournament can only be a positive sign for him and soon he must join Volandri in the top 70 players in the world. Something Italy needs at the moment!

This tournament should see Starace go into the top 120 and get nearer to that milestone of top 100.

anyone else think that Potito is Adrien Brody's long-lost brother and/or separated at birth?!

I recently wrote that to Jon Wertheim (cnnsi.com/tennis) .... and he didn't post it on his column, so I guess he doesn't think its that close a resemblance. Anyone share my opinion?

Thank you! The pic with safin is really nice, I don't know what it is, but I love the way he looks at Safin's hand  .

Don't you know what happened with Safin at the Roland Garros? Really?

Well, The great Potito at his first Grand Slam, after beating Tursunov and Grosjean both in 3 sets was facing in the 3rd round the former number one Marat Safin, and he was going to win...

He was serving for the match (5-4 in the 4th set)...
...and the line-judge called a foot-fault on the match-point.
The second in 2 match, the second on a match-point; it happened with grosjean too, but that time he won. So, serve and volley with the second ball, great serve, good volley, but a miracle of Safin and was again Deuce.

And what did he do, the great Marat, in the game most important of the match, when they were 40-40???
He calls the medical aid!!! :fiery:
When the match is going to end???
When Potito is 2 points from an historical exploit???
Yes, he had a Hand Injury...

http://www.gazzetta.it/gazzetta/common/area_gazzetta/gallerie/altri_sport/2004/maggio/rolan_garros/galleria/jpg/image25.jpg

Marat seems to say: look at my blisters...
while Potito seems to think many things..... :fiery: :banghead: :smash:

Anyway, you know how the match was over (Safin won 6-7(4) 6-4 3-6 7-5 7-5). He played great, but some other times he called the medical aid (in the most delicate moments, obvious...).
A very Fair Player, no doubt about it...

Potito is still looking for take his revenge :banghead:

Potito got cheated then for sure. Now Potito is in Austria at the GEnerali Open with Marc Lopez in round 1... these 2 had a tough battle in qualifying for the French Open so this might be a tough matvh for Potito but I expect him to win now as he has entered a diferent level since then.

I heard something about blisters and Safin calling the medical aid, but I watched a live scoreboard the whole match. They never broadcasted one of Potito's matches and they just showed like 1 minute in the highlights of the day.

Starace won the battle of Italy in 3 big sets. I think Potito is ready now to rule the world. If he wins this tournament he has a good chance of entering the top 100. Starace's career has kick start... a very good 3 set win over Ferrero and next Davydenko... if he does somehow beat Davydenko then after is Robredo... as good a chance as any for an Italian to reach the semi-final here... go for it Potito!

Potito skipped Napoli challenger to prepare for the indoor season starting in Metz for him

http://it.eurosport.yahoo.com/26092007/45/atp-metz-starace-carico-per-stagione-indoor.html

rough translation

Starace is completing the prepapration for the hard courts, saturday he'll part for France where he will play the ATP tournament of Metz. "I'm training for the indoor tournaments, I'm feeling well and will train till friday and then saturday I'll part for Metz, I'm feeling confident. ". Since 2 weeks ago the tennis coming from Campania region is the new Italian no.1

"I'm happy to be the Italian no.1 and also to have entered in top 30. It's nice to be number 1 in Italy and to have an important ranking" A positive season for Potito, specially because for the first time he didnt have physical problems. "Finally a season without any problems. i should say that this winter i trained very well and the results are seen. I could play regulary and find good confidence especially on clay, my surface ".

In hard courts Starace surely could do well but he needs to improve his tennis. 'I'm convinced that in the last 2 years I've improved at least of 60% but i could do better. I need to improve on my return and especially on hard courts i need to be more aggressive. On clay I have more time, on hard I dont. ".

http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/news?slug=reu-menbuenos_airesmaradona&prov=reuters&type=lgns

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Italian tennis player Potito Starace has lambasted former idol Diego Maradona for insulting him during his quarter-final loss to Argentina’s David Nalbandian in the Buenos Aires Open.

Argentine soccer great Maradona was supporting his compatriot Nalbandian from the stands but Starace, a fan of Maradona’s former team Napoli, was appalled by his conduct.

“Maradona insulted me as soon as the match began,” Starace told Italy’s Radio Kiss Kiss on Saturday.

“Diego made me lose my head, I went to the umpire and I said to him: ‘Either you throw him out or I’ll go bash a racket in his teeth’.”

World number 35 Starace became increasingly irate during his 4-6 7-6 6-4 defeat.

“I have always been a big fan of Napoli and Maradona and before the match I told journalists I would like to meet him. But I was very disappointed by his behaviour,” he said.

“I know that at the end of the match he came down to the dressing rooms but I had already left because I was very angry.”

Maradona led his country to World Cup glory in 1986 but has caused controversy throughout his life and been dogged by drugs and health problems.

You really think that? Delic seems to be on his way to winning, and you'd have to give Potito at least a small chance against Amer.

Lost 64 76... played a very good match. This should give Potito some confidence again, despite choking a set point with a double fault. Nadal also played quite well, so Starace did well to take this game so far, and he really got the crowd going :)

played a very good match but had an excellent chance to take it to a 3d set

even in the first set he could have gone 4-1 up and would have been easier to defend that advantage, after he got rebroken he fell apart for many games till he broke back himself in the 2nd set
if he keeps this form with a good draw he can win a few rounds at RG

Champion number 1

Indeed but Potito always seems to get unlucky draws. I believe he has the ability to make the top 20-25... because he is decent on hard courts aswell. By the way, that was one of the best drop shot displays and touch tennis that I have seen from an Italian for many many years.

Over here in England the question arised, which Italian player they believed has the ability to be top 20 and they said Bolelli, but I think Starace has a really solid game, if only he could win a few more of these close matches.

his hard court record is pretty bad, you hardly can make top 20 with clay courts only, unless you do well at rg and the masters and so far potito hasnt gone deep in them

ATP Tour - Safin crashes to Starace

Potito Starace beat Russian Marat Safin in the second round of the Swedish Open to take his second win in a row over a former world number one at the claycourt tournament. The Italian, who beat Spain's Carlos Moya in the previous round, took advantage of Safin's lack of recent claycourt practice to win 7-6 3-6 6-4 and set up a meeting with Czech fourth seed Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals.

"I played as well as I could but it's tough to change surfaces in such short time," said Safin, who last week reached the Wimbledon semi-finals where he was beaten by Roger Federer.

Although losing by little against Starace, Safin struggled to find his game and threw his racket in anger several times.
