Where did Roddick's serve come from?

I have never seen anything like it. I remember reading somewhere that early in Andy's career he had a more classical style serve. But something caused him to change it. What could that have been, a freak accident. LOL I mean the serve is ugly. And I am baffled that he can generate so much speed with such a mechanical movement. Does anyone know what part of his serve stands out as the contributing factor to him generating such amazing
speeds?

Roddick, Philippoussis and all good servers hit the serve exactly the
same way, with forearm pronation, powered by the rotational momentum
created by the legs and torso.
Of course most people do not have the talent to achieve that.

he was pissed during practice, threw the ball in the air and smacked the crap out of the ball in pure frustration. he did it a few times more and they landed in. the rest is history :smoke:

Not exactly. Actually Andy's serve is unique. He use a "leg pump" push off to generate all that pace. Record a match of his and you'll see he spends less time in the leg bent position then anyone else on tour. Plus of course he has tremendous racquet acceleration. But otherwise your right all good serves hit it the same.

Roddick's serve isn't a thing of beauty, it's a thing of dominance.

I love the mechanics of his serve and I love that no one else serves like him.

To me, his serve is a thing of beauty. I could watch him serve all day. :)

Sometimes when I watch his serve, I just think "OW"

What is beautiful is that Roger always outserves Andy and Mark with his lesser speed but better placed serve. Just goes to show you that you can have beauty and a high ace count.

exactly, that's a good example that speed is not everything

well take into consideration Federer is a much better returner of serve , percentage wise, than a heck of a lot more people out there;) and I would take Fed's serve over Philippoussis' one anyday, but would take Roddick's out of the 3 mentioned:p

Exactly, roger out aces roddick and the poo because he is so good returning their serves.

He's a great returner, but that wouldn't explain why he wins the highest percentage of games on his own serve anyway... It's like in the 90s. So he's serve must be better.

I was going along the lines of Roger being a much better returner of serve than Roddick and Mark so he stops them from hitting so many aces, and they don't return serve all that well so he can easily outace them. Heck all it takes is like 5 aces from Fed and he'll prob outace them because he gets all their serves back when he's playing well (a lot of the time he is)

yeah. But his serve is dangerous nevertheless. When they hit aces, he hits service winners...

Normally I don't think Roger hits that many aces. He uses his serve to set up for a forehand kill, or to control the rally and move you around until you are out of position and makes a mistake. That's why he has a very high service game winning percentage but low ace counts. But, if he is hitting a lot of aces against you, then you are in really big trouble.

well I never said Roger had a crap serve to begin with  all i said was that I would pick Roddicks serve first, Fed's 2nd, and Mark's last (though I would opt for other players than him) and I gave what i thought the answer was behind roger out acing the 2 big servers :scared:
