WHEN tennis star Mark Philippoussis takes to the court at Wimbledon this month, he will reveal a sportswear range he designed himself.

Philippoussis told The Sunday Telegraph he was tired of the regimented tennis lifestyle and had his heart set on a career as a fashion designer.

"I'm sick of running around, waking up at 7am and going to the gym," he said.

"I'm so thankful for tennis, but it's only one part of my life and it's going to be over in four years.

"I've been on tour now for 10 years. I have the best four years of my career left, but I want to do something after that and I want my new career to be even bigger."

Philippoussis has designed a sportswear line as part of a more extensive clothing range he will launch in November.

He said streetwear had been an influence and his theme colours were unique - lime green, burnt orange, blue and red.

At Wimbledon, he will wear tennis clothes he created specifically to enhance his comfort on the court.

"I hope it'll bring me luck. I'm very excited and a little nervous," Philippoussis said.

"Unfortunately, I couldn't go too crazy, because Wimbledon is a tournament with a history behind it and I can only wear white."

Bringing out his own clothing range is something Philippoussis has wanted to do for some years.

The tennis champ said this ambition grew out of his lack of patience for shopping.

The range is called MP and the logo is of a sun - similar to the fire-sun tattoo Philippoussis has on his shoulder.

"I have put it on the clothes to make it more personal," he said.

"It is symbolic of my Greek heritage, which is a big part of who I am. Alexander the Great fought, no matter what the odds against him."

Philippoussis and his Australian co-designer, Bruno Schiavi, plan to launch the clothing range in America and the UK in March 2005.

While Philippoussis hopes his designs will prove popular internationally, he said they were dedicated to his long-time supporters in Australia.

Well, he should retire now then.

As a future fashion student, this should be highly entertaining. I look forward to seeing his 'creations.'

Me too.

I also found this part interesting:

If he's dedicating his fashion line to the Aussies, why is he not launching the line in Australia?

I cant wait to see it!!!

lol, i dont think he can go that wrong with mens clothes. Its not like he's gonna turn up in anything skin tight (jan mike hideous white long-sleeved top)... mark is very street wear and surf wear type of guy... i think its great he's doing this! Mens tennis clothes are so boring, and even if it is bad, mark can pull it off!

he's the only player that looked good in fila's hippy blue shirt at the start of the year...and nothing can be as bad as that!!

But Mark can get away with wearing almost anything because we all know what lies beneath the clothes. ;) Wonder how his designs will look on ordinary man.

@@ This is a good move for Mark Poo Poo~ actually I've admired his fashion style for a while now & in that department I think he's definitely one of the better dressed Tennis pros. The colourful "lime greens & sunburnt oranges..." sounds cool! But he's is very lucky to be so tall & broad shouldered! Yeah his fashions may not look so cool on average height guys like myself.
# Desperately hope Philippoussis can win a Slam; possibly his last chance at Wimbledon this year-->> but if not it's good to see he's planning for something when he retires..
