hey! That's nice I guess. Andre and Andy have been practicing together out in California on grass so I guess it makes sense that they play some doubles too.

That's a treat for Andre's fans. He rarely plays doubles.

I think it has something to do with Andre & Robby's combined ranking in singles. They changed the requirements last year or the year before to try and get more singles players to participate in Doubles.

Ah OK :)

The thing is.. they could actually win that match. I know Mark is a good doubles player, but not a great one and well Robby.. :(

I wonder why don't more top players do the same. Roger should team up with Henman, Safin should team up with the Poo, so that we can see more interesting double matches. :)

Roger often played with Max..
Henman and Greg have played together..
I have seen Safin and Escudé in action too.
They do team up, just not that frequently :(

Good point. I think it would be a shame not to select the Bryan brothers for that team.

A tacit admission by Andre that he needs more matchplay to avoid another debacle at Wimbledon?

Havok
06-06-2004, 01:53 AM
Hey Roddick/Vahaly breat the Bryan brothers last year so who knows what can happen:scared: and star the Bryans are a lock for the doubles, and so is Andy for singles. USA is allowed a total of 6, so they have 3 more slots to fit in. I'm pretty sure Agassi stated that he isn't playing both Davis Cup and the Olympics, he wants to leave that up to the young americans. So if they go with lets say Fish, Ginepri, and Spadea, I can see Roddick teaming up with Fish for the 2nd doubles team for the USA. If somehow Blake gets a spot for the singles, the 2nd doubles team will be Fish/Blake without a doubt

could be, but with the quick surface change, lots of people who usually don't play doubles enter the doubles field for more matches under their belt on the new current surface they're playing on

That's a bizarre doubles team! But I like it... ;)

It will be interesting to see if they can be effective. Andre has only one doubles title to his name (1993 Cincinnati, w/ Petr Korda). Andy has two (Houston 2002, w/Mardy Fish; Delray Beach 2001, w/ Jan-Michael Gambill) .

with Agassi's return & Roddick's serve they should be able to be competetive against any doubles team despite their poor volley skills. It sort of reflects badly on the standard of doubles these days but thats the way it is.

star
06-08-2004, 02:17 PM
I don't think their volleying skills are "poor." I think they have on the order of average volleying skills for pro tennis. Andy can make amazing volleys off his shoe laces one minute and brick an easy volley the next. I think he's more inconsistent than anything.

Anyway, we don't know their style of playing doubles because we haven't seen them in action.

poor volleys relative to their other skills and relative to the top doubles teams, volleys are crucial in doubles.

I think there is a lot more to this! I think it is great for Andy to practice and play with one of the all-time greats, who is obviously getting ready to retire.
Andre has ALWAYS been a giving person...this is another way for him to pass it on!!

Andre you have been great..Andy your greatness will shine one day!!!

Depends on if they don't pull out  . And by "they" I mean Andre. I'm kind of glad to see Roddick playing doubles. It's too bad he doesn't play it as much anymore. Then again, look who is coach is ;) .

Welcome back, Deb!! :bigwave:

No, I've never seen Robby & Mark play in person but I figured that they had the upper hand seeing that Mark is a doubles player and Robby plays on a fairly consistent basis

Thanks Katherine :) (jet lag sucks!)

No actually, they're not that bad, perhaps I was exaggerating. I saw their match against Mardy and James in Houston and Mardy and James were just playing really well together that week, plus how much can you judge about a team from one match :) I remember thinking their communication wasn't that great and just put up against a good doubles team I don't think they'll usually do well. I was really shocked to see that Andy and Andre beat them that easily though, since Andre hasn't played doubles in so long and it's certainly not Andy's strong point. Sounds like they've been spending a lot of time together though... I hope only the good stuff about Andre rubs off on him ;)

Arthurs/Hanley, the score was 6-4 7-6(6) I think.. one break at 4-4 in the first and they traded breaks in the second and it was a pretty tight TB (from the way the live scoring showed anyway ;))

Seeing pics of them on the court together is just really creepy and really funny, yet I'm not sure why :scared: :bolt:

Kiara
06-09-2004, 07:33 PM
A&A we'ren't bad at ALL, they were clearly having fun out there, they were on court 1 which is so much more intimate, it had obviously been a while since either one of them had played on such a small court
Andre was laughing and joking with the crowd, the atmosphere was great, and it was a closer match than the score suggests.
Andre played some superb volleys, and rarely missed. He missed one in the second set and was like " come on Andre you faggot" lol! At the end of the second set he was just hitting winners off Arthurs' serve. Andy didnt volley at the start, he flubbed a few and then stopped volleying but but he hit a couple of amazing smashes and served well. The majority of the time, they were at the baseline or one would start at the net and end at the baseline .At the net Andre did most of the work. All in i think they work well together and having a good time, they didnt look like they were talking it too seriously though, Andre kept asking for the score of the Henman match.

Arthur's served his usual billion aces while Hanley worked his butt off at the net but they had to work pretty hard today to pull off a win The last few games and the tb were very close, but they lacked the co-ordination than Arthurs and Hanley had and next to them A&A's lack of double's experience was glaringly obvious . Had they been more motivated and taken it seriously they couldve pulled it off.

Ginepri and Merklein weren't much of a challenge at all, Merklein's serve sucked big time. Andy did most of the work in that match, he just smacked fh winners from the back of the court throughout the whole match.

Oh and Gilbert didnt shut his gob for one second, he was giving Cahill a migraine ;)

Deboogle!.
06-09-2004, 07:38 PM
Thanks Kiara!!! You were at the match then, I take it? I'm sure they were both using it just to get match play, if they were both serious about doubles they'd play it more  Too bad they didn't take it a little more seriously... usually Andy is so competitive that he'll beat himself up in practice

and that's hilarious about Brad (though yet, not at all surprising) :haha: People really just need to learn not to sit next to him (and even then he'd still talk to the empty seat :))

Kiara
06-09-2004, 07:46 PM
Yeah I was at both matches and they were pretty exciting, they really know how to work the crowd. Im glad Andre didnt pull out after his loss like Poo did :fiery:
Spreen was sitting next to Gilbo initially and he moved so Cahill had to sit there.. even his son moved to the next row lol! He just doesn't know when to or HOW to shut his mouth.

well that's great they were making it entertaining, glad to hear it :) Doubles is more fun to watch than singles a lot of the times IMO. The best matches I saw at Houston were James and Mardy's dubs matches for the exact same reason :) I wish dubs would get better tv coverage :(

which side of the court did each play on when they received? I doubt they actually sat down and tried to decide who had the bigger forehand (which usually plays the ad side if they're both right-handed)
