Top 2 seeds are put into different groups. 3rd and 4th seeds are group and one is drawn into one group while the other goes to another. And so on for 5th and 6th, 7th and 8th.

RR within the group so every player will play the other 3 players. Top player from group A will play 2nd player from group B and vice versa.

I'm realistic. I know Richard wouldn't win in either group so if he's going to lose, he might as well lose to Nole. Would have preferred him to lose to Nole and Roger rather than Nole and Nadal though. :p

No clue what Nole's form is atm. On paper, he should win this group, but the Ferrer match will tell the real story. And Ferrer is a nightmarish opponent for any player whos game's even slightly off. I hope courts in Shanghai are fast.

This is really the group of death. Poor things.

Essential question.Very good post:yeah:

If Novak shows up there in good form, he could win all matches in the group, almost routinely. If he doesn't, he'll be in real trouble. But, one thing is clear-he can't lose all tree in a row.

I found some articles on Chinese website. I summarised what I read about Nole's arrival.

When asked about his expectation in TMC, he answered he wanted to win. Of course, this answer was interpret differently by different reporters. Some in very negative way like his haters here and some in a more positive way. He also said that since this was the first time he's in TMC, he had nothing to lose.

He said he was very tired during the week in Paris but it's been 2 weeks after he removed his 2 wisedom teeth, he was not affected anymore. After Paris, he went to Monte Carlo to train.

They called him the funniest guy of ATP. When asked whether he would imitate anyone in Shanghai, he said he kept it a secret.

He's very tired after the long fight, all touring or promotional activities were cancelled but he asked for training facilities for the day, saying he could not wait to hit the balls.

He wants to earn enough money to provide a comfortable life for his family. The pressure is great, from media and fans. Djordje is as talent as him.

Oh yes. Some Nole fans on a Chinese tennis message board are planning a project where they get Nole to sign a flag in Shanghai, pass the flag on to someone who's going to Australia for him to sign and the flag will keep getting passed on to those who are attending tournaments that Nole's playing in. Then, they will give the flag to Nole at next year's TMC. Cute idea.

Nole’s first practice in the venue was postponed 2 hours because photo shots for his racket’s sponsor. He joked that he did not go modeling.

He practiced with his coach and 2 hitters (???) seriously for 2 hours but the practice was filled with fun moments. After warm up, he bet with his coach who could hit the ball to the white jade roof of the stadium. Unfortunately, Nole lost. He clapped for his coach but was making a face at the same time.

And not to disappoint his haters in MTF, Nole also practiced how to look miserable running to and from hitting the ball, cried out loud in misery. And when he hit a winner, he yelled out loud in celebration. And before everyone recovered from his tactics, he slumped onto a chair and pretended he could not breathe.

He was the first player practiced on the court after it’s laid. He said it’s a bit slow and soft. He said after more players practices, the court would likely be faster.

After the practice, he played football on the court. He also asked tournament staff if they could put a Serbia flag in the stadium. He said the flag would give him extra strength. He hoped he would “blossom” there (with a mysterious smile while he said).

I am so sad and furious. Novak played like 155. on ATP.

Here:

Djokovic, who will next play Richard Gasquet as he tries to keep his semifinal hopes alive, paid tribute to Ferrer for his win.

"I was the favorite in this match, but he proved that he's a great player and absolutely he deserved to win.I didn't play on the level I was supposed to play, that I played throughout all this year... but I'm still not out of the chances to get to the semifinal... Mentally I felt a bit more pressure than I usually have. Obviously that had an effect on my game.

"I knew that it's not going to be an easy match. I didn't underestimate him. Obviously he was very motivated - it's even his first time in Shanghai, in the Masters Cup, and he didn't have anything to lose. You could see that he was moving really well. He was aggressive. He kind of surprised me in the start, the way he played."

It's not an excuse but I think he burnt out for the season. His singles record this year so far is 68-16/84 matches while his career record in ATP is 121-48/169 matches. So this year, he played as many matches as he has ever played in ATP before.

He should take it easy (which I doubt he can) for TMC, lots of rest afterward (I think at least 3 weeks before training again) and come back for 2008.

It's very possible Lee. Perhaps a plan for next year would include a reduction in optionals, especially if he plans on defending a LOT of points from slams. I mean, if he can collect points from slams and TMSs...

Does anyone know how he feels about the Olympics?

I was little angry (which is stupid, I guess), so I said it.Generally, we use that term to describe some attributes commonly comprehended as our national attributes. Those are, for example, hospitality, sence of humour, passionate

I'm sure he will reach the top 3 or 5 ( :help: ) soon. He has a complete game, is physically solid ( :help: ) and he has fabulous ground strokes. What's more, he reads the game well."

Disgusting....I don't buy "tiredness". WTF is going on with him? This is fourth consecutive loss, isn't it?
This is becoming annoying... Strange thing that Jankovic did the same, are they preparing for Hopman Cup? I just can't believe how bad he is right now.

On the other side, I would be thrilled if Gasquet can get to semifinal. I like the guy.

He is sooo nice!!! I love him even more now!

This season was a lot for him. It's the first year where he has gone deep in nearly every tournament, therefore making him play a heck of a lot of matches. Not only that, but he's had the pressure to be expected to go deep in a lot of tournaments, the pressure that he's expected to challenge Nadal, to go after Federer. At the end of a season, this happens. I'm not shocked. These are the best players in the world he's losing to, it's not like he's losing to Oscar Hernandez or something. Gasquet is a great player. Ferrer is a great player who is having the season of his life really. I'm not surprised. Disappointed? Of course. We aren't the only ones who expected more from Shanghai. Even haters in GM predicted him to easily get to the SF. And well, they were wrong. I guess since I am fans of both Ferrer and Gasquet, maybe that sweetened the blow a little bit. Of course Novak is my #1, but if Ferrer and Gasquet make it through to the semifinals (and if maybe someone else beats Roger in Roger's group  ) I'd love that.

I think part of my ambivalence is also, like most of the players, I'm tired too  I'm starting to just want the offseason here already too.

The boy needs to rest, but then he just really needs to continue working on his fitness. Yes, he's been working on that all year, but we all know it still needs improvement. Until his fitness is better, guys like Ferrer, Nadal are always going to be a problem, because he is never going to wear them down and if his game is off, they're going to take advantage. Several great opportunities this year got smashed because of fitness. Continue to work on that, continue to work on the volleys which are also still a weakness and he should be able to maintain a high level next year.

It will be difficult to have the pressure of having to defend so many points next year, and he will have to cope with this as well, but I wish him luck.

And I hope he beats Nadal in the last match just for the hell of it. :D

Not much more to add to what Jess said and I said the day before. Only wish Nole luck next season. I think he's mentally tired more than physically.

Scheduling for next year will be very difficult especially with Olympics. He really needs some very good advise.

And a DC tie too, but the opposition in both cases were pretty weak.

I forced myself to watch the match on a rerun, it was awful. I like Richie, I'm glad he's still in with a chance, but seeng Novak like that was just painful. Blasting away without purpose or a reason, no variety, no point construction, no movement, he was like playing underwater. I hope it's simply exhaustion (physical, emotional, mental, whatever), not some deeper issue. I hope he gets this joy and spark back the next season. But it's no gimme.

I don't think I gonna watch the Nadal match. In Nole's current condition it can only end one way, and I'm not enough of a masochist to subject myself to that willingly.

He won Vienna after USO, right?

That's true, but it was also a pretty weak draw for him. Even when he's this much off his game, he's still much better than most players. He didn't face any really tough opponents there. The best player he faced was Chela, who isn't anywhere near the "top tier" of players, and he just *barely* won that match.

Jiat and Eve should understand but I'll do a rough translation. When Nole returned to the hotel yesterday, some girl ran up to hug him and refused to let go. She was crying and asked him to marry her. Nole could only look at his coach. As he walked to the hotel door, there were other girls who ran up to hug him while his mum looked on helplessly.

Apparently, on another occasion, one girl ran up to kiss him. :help:

Les réactions de Nole en français ;)

11 novembre 2007 : Ferrer bat Djokovic 6-4, 6-4

13 novembre 2007 : Gasquet bat Djokovic 6-4, 6-2

15 novembre 2007 : Nadal bat Djokovic 6-4, 6-4
