Stan has the game to be top 20, no question, but he doesn't have the belief against the top players. Against these guys, when crunch time comes and he needs to make the play work, he falters.

Well done Rafa :hatoff:
Never in doubt, expected win, etc...

o_O Stan. What a headcase... he should really do something about his mental fortitude. He HAS the game to trouble Raf, if he weren't such a gigantic choker on BP conversion.

Anyway, the best player won.

Agree with what has been said..

I thought that we were in for an upset when Stan broke to lead 4-2 in the first set; but Nadal [in true champions style tbh..] broke back to love. Obviously Nadal ups the ante but Stan had to put up a better defence of his break..

Stan played most of the big points badly.
Rafa played most of the big points well.

And the funny thing is, Nadal didn't do sh1t to break back. Stan miss all his 1st serves.

Stan shit himself as usual in the clutch moments.

I knew it would be a tough match, and Stan came out firing. He probably would have beaten just about anyone in that 1st set. But then, of course, he went all...stupid for a bit there, and Rafa took full advantage. All matches aren't cakewalks, but Rafa pulled through that very well. And played much better in the 2nd set than in the first. Played much better than yesterday as well. All good signs.

Surprisingly, their closest match was the one on clay.

only due to nadal's injury... have you seen the match in stuttgart? rafa was moving & playing really bad :wavey:

Clay is also Stan's best surface, isn't it?

I didn't think Rafa played so bad in the Stuttgart final .. ? Certainly I've seen him play a lot, lot worse.

edited to add: :woohoo:  for Rafa. Apart from the Cincinatti weirdness, QF or better at all the MS events this year :yeah:

Good win for Rafa  especially to gain as much confidence that he can because I think against Micha he's gonna need it
I really hope that Haas wins but I have a feelling that he'll not and Misha is such a bad match for Rafa!
But to show how much I know about tennis in USO I cheered up for Ferrer against Nalbandian, too!

Not bad! Rafa stepped it up at the end of the 1st set and during the 2nd. It was nice to see him close that 1st set so emphatically after being in trouble for most of it... :yeah:

Indeed it is. I actually like Stan quite a bit...but yikes on the mental toughness. Of course, one can't discount the fact that Rafa is just an absolute beast on break points, but Stan HANDED him that break back in the first set.

I don't like to accuse players of choking, but that first set was a very clear choke. The second set was Rafa in Rafzilla mode - kind of fun to watch. That running forehand down-the-line at the end of the first set was the beginning of the end for Wawa.
