Djoko is a mess...barely running. Playing shite at net...I can't decide if it was a tank or a crap performance. He was supposed to be making a challenge for #2 but if he can't pick up points on the faster surfaces where Nadal flops then his chances keep falling.

Good job though Fabrice your style of play is :worship: :worship: :worship: . Santoro to face Murray now...to be honest I would have prefered Muggay's chances against Nole. He better play better at YEC!

Weird, Weird match.

Okay, so Santoro can be difficult, and gave Nole no pace on his shots (which resulted in those short balls Nole was gift-wrapping for Santoro?!), but that was utter crap from him.

And he did not seem upset at all for losing, not in the second set, not that I could tell.

Odd, very Odd.

Now lets see what Rafa does against Volandri, he has a nice excuse, Volandri did, after all, cause the upset of the decade this year in Rome :)

Strange from Djokovic - either he did just completely tank or he was playing so awfully and was so baffled by Santoro that he just stopped caring out there.

Great win for Le Magicien :) he did show some of his magic, but most of the time it was just enough to stand there and return the balls, since Nole did all the work himself.

As for him, I have nothing to say. Really. (What can be said anyway?) The performance eerily similar to Moya match in Cincy.

But having nothing to say is a great opportunity for practicing tardism. So here we go:

He obviously tanked the match for two main reasons: 1) he wants to stay fresh for the top cats in Shanghai, 2) he wants his buddy Andy to appear there, so he gave him a fighting chance by tanking, since they both know Nole would've smashed him into pieces if they played.

(Now, am I getting good at this or what?)

A couple of times this year Nole has not shown up to play. Cincy and Umag come to mind easily. Still even ATP Tv's commentators said Nole didn't make an effort and didn't seem too bothered by how the match went. No racquet throwing frustration from the Serb. Did he even frown?

I suspect there are a whole bunch of pros who don't like this tournament and resent ATP for making them show up for it. Still after they fined Davydenko last week for lack of effort, can they really ignore what just happened?

I have not seen famous Davidenko games, but now...i just can't remember when someone from top players can give such shit performance, like Djoko did today.

Why don't they move Paris before Madrid and the two weeks of big normal tournaments to the end of the year. Therefore all those who have qualified can do Paris and have a decent rest and all those looking for points can do the last two weeks?

Well they don't really make you show up to it, do they? You can always not show up - it's easy, players have been doing it for years. If Nole didn't want to play he could pretend he had pulled a muscle in practice and wanted to rest up for Shanghai. Of course he wouldn't have gotten his bonus money then but it's not like someone from the ATP went and marched him to Paris at gunpoint and made him play.

Reading the thread title again, I don't see Federer anywhere.

And as to the comparison, it does not fit. Can you tell me when Federer tanked this year? He may have lost, but he hasn't thrown a match like that. And Djoko is up and coming player, he needs to do well in AMS tournaments to get to the top.

Novak said himself that he had the foot surgery:

"Fabrice deserved to win but I played really badly," said Djokovic. "I had foot surgery a couple of weeks ago and I've been under medication since.

"It's been a very long season and I'm really exhausted," he added. "I hope people will understand. You can't be at 100 percent all the time."

The 20-year-old said he was struggling following dental surgery to remove two wisdom teeth.

"I couldn't give my 100 percent, not even 30 percent of my possibilities," Djokobvic said.

"He deserved to win. I'm still on medications. I didn't practise for a whole week, I only started practising two days ago. Physically, I'm not feeling at all good."

Novak said himself that he had the foot surgery:

well I don't know what to think, he had some foot troubles in Madrid and that was 10 days, if he had surgery and it can be anything, I can hardly see him playing in a few days.

Seriously though, a removal of wisdom teeth can be pretty nasty indeed, and if he indeed still was taking painkillers, that would explain quite a lot.

Yay Fab! One of the most fun players ever. 34 and still kicking ass. He should've beaten Blake in New York. But I guess this was redeeming after that crap loss to Benneteau last year.

I guess Batman is totally running out of gas. To be honest, I've kinda gotten sick of him since the Stepanek match. Now Murray's gonna own everyone.

Good tank Nole.

Last year in Paris was his worst match I saw and this was worst. It's a long year and all but he had much to play for and I don't see him coming close to the top anytime soon. What a waste

Yes, we finally have conclusive evidence about his trajectory towards the top now. Congrats for being so fast pointing it out :yeah:

No need to try too hard, just be your usual self

Good loss. Hope it keeps him away from Rafa.

Here's a first: GO RAFA!!!! :rocker:

Are you sure you are all right?

It must have been a rough procedure then because taking medication two weeks after getting your wisdon teeth surgery is . I think my friends and I only took pain killers for three to five days or so- much to our chagrin. The nasty cleaning procedure of course had to last a lot longer.

I am sure he will come out fighting in Shanghai.

Folks have provided sources upthread that indicate that it was actually dental, not foot surgery - early articles had a mistranslation. :)

Exactly my thought. Novak seems to be a very ambitious player and therefore I don't see why he would miss an opportunity to go further in a tournament. There's still the whole next week to rest before Shanghai.

I don't know how much he was bothered with what kind of injury, but as we have seen in the past he doesn't hesitate to retire when he feels the need to.

Maybe since wisdon teeth removal does not ususally take two weeks to recover from (outside of cleaning), he thought he would be able to play and therefore did not withdraw from the tournament.

Well, it can be a really dirty job - sometimes infections appear quite a time afterwards, etc. Anyway - if he wasn't fit, he shouldn't have played AT ALL. So apparently he just came over to collect the bucks...

He is very boring to tell you now, What does he do, Slicve every bloody forehand that comes to you, when i saw him ver montanes, the first game i watched, then i went to bed, i would of liked to watch a more intresting match. Your comment towards Chela, very old and his a great player not boring..
