Muzza defeats Nieminen 7-6(5) 6-3 to keep Shanghai hopes alive

:yeah:

Some fighter this kid, just won't give up his Shanghai hopes. Nieminen had 5-3 in the tie break and Muzza wins the next 4 points. Then Nieminen led 3-1 in the 2nd set, had points for 4-1 and Muzza comes back to take the next 5 games :smoke:

Djokovic should be a thriller, about time Andy put up a decent display against him.

Five straight games from Murray after being broken to go 1-3* down in the second set. :)

Nice going Andy...got the job done! :smoke:

Not too confident about his chances against Nole, though. :help:

But great effort from him over the last 4 weeks...he should be proud. At least we get to see Haas and Robredo (and hopefully Blake too) squirm through another match.

Some entertaining tennis from both players for about the first 3/4 of the first set until Murray played that poor service game at 6-5. Nieminen showed some strong netplay and the forehand down-the-line approach was very effective early on. Murray got away with winning the tie-breaker despite a terrible dropshot thrown in there, although given that he was the one that had all the opportunities to break in the first set, it was only appropriate that he won the first set. Strong recovery from Murray in the second set after going down a break down in the second set where his returns started working much better. :yeah:

Likely encounter with Djokovic next - I really really hope that we won't be seeing another one-sided encounter, not that it is likely.

Murray got way too passive on break points and was lucky to get away with the 1st set in the end even though he dominated.

He had me worried for a last few games of the first and the first few of the second but he knuckled down and came through strongly.

I think as evident in St Peters the fighter in Andy and the will to win matches is coming to the fore and could be a real weapon. Not all players have the ability to win matches when they are playing crap.

Yeah indeed that's exactly his strength, but that's exactly what is Djokovic his strength too..Should prove a good match between them two!
I am 100% positieve, bar injuries, they will both supplement the top 5 next year.

Good enough in the end. Struggled early on with the break points - sometimes too passive, sometimes going for huge returns.

Nieminen is a tricky fighter though - he played a very good set and a half, then Murray woke up, moved up a gear and that was that.

Well done Andy :D the morning start was tricky.. glad to see him get through this.

He can't afford to let those break points slip away if he's playing Nole though...

Jarkko blew his chances here, should have won that tiebreaker

with his weak serve and a quality returner like murray i don't see it too much as a blow

True but Nieminen gifted him the minibreak back with a really poor forehand that went miles long and that was all Andy needed to get back in and attack the next point.

I'm liking the fact Muzza is able to win matches against players like nieminen when he isn't playing as well as he can, and the fact his mental strength is getting alot better, bodes well for next year.

Could do with Santoro putting Nole through the mill today...preferably even beating him.

Good win for Murray, never in doubt against a junkballer like Niemo. I hope to see Murray doing a job on that arrogant prick djokovic, well that is if Santoro doesn't finish him off shortly. Murray won't be fooled by Santoros crap and tricks. I'm thinking Murray is probably the favourite to get that Shanghai spot.

In reality though, Murray should have stormed away with that 1st set.

Murray's biggest continuing problem is the 1st serve & failing to capitalise on break points. When he gets it in, he wins the point 8/9 times out of 10. Yet when he gets the vulnerable 2nd one in & usually gets punished. When he can't get the 1st in, he usually ends up going walkabout for brief spells. Which against the bigger guys they'll punish him heavily for it. Hopefully over the coming couple of months before the AO, he can get it worked on.

Still, good to see him back fighting when he does lose his way a little bit. Would hope to see him try & get some revenge or Djokovic but he's currently down a set & 2 breaks, so it looks like it may be Santoro. Which I actually think may be a harder player for him to face. He's experienced & always keeps coming at you, giving little away in return. Which Murray likes to give players a chance to cause their own misfortunes. So it could be an interesting match against Santoro unless Djokovic can turn things around very quickly!

Good win against a difficult opponent. It was a bit of a patchy performance, some really nice stuff and some pretty poor stuff. He really needs to sort out his BP conversion rate, he makes so many chances that he really should be rolling over these guys a whole lot easier than he does. I don't understand how he can fashion so many BPs, but then has so much difficulty converting. Obviously the server takes some credit, but a lot of it is down to Andy I think.

Anyway, it's a minor gripe to be honest. Really pleased with the win, and really looking forward to the match-up with Santoro. I think it will be a really nice match and hopefully Andy will make it to Shanghai.

Should be a good match with Santoro, both are unpredictable and can hit unconventional shots. I like Murrays chances but with the "Magician" at home you never know! Maybe he played his best match today against Djok, who knows

How hard am I going to cheer for Santoro but I'm afraid it will be in vain. But maybe the "Magician" trash will make Murray nuts - one can hope... I'm really pissed at Nole right now, why couldn't he wait to tank until after Murray's match.

Santoro could barely play against Nole today i find it hard to believe he can beat Murray tomorrow as his movement and play is severely restricted

Good win and he should be beating Santoro, I would back him to win the battles when Santoro tries crafty baselining and we all know he is one of the best passers in the game so it shouldn't be super tough but you never know what Santoro will have up his sleeve and it won't be easy as pie either.

Should beat Santoro, but will he? Maybe Santoro will drive him as nuts at he did Djoko. Interesting .....
