Agassi to Return after Accepting Stella Artois Wild Card

06-04-2004, 02:58 PM
The great Andre Agassi will return to the Stella Artois Championships after accepting a wild card into the prestigious grass court tournament to be staged at the Queen’s Club, 7th-13th June, 2004.

The American will hope to go a couple of steps further than last year when he reached the semi-finals and lost to eventual winner Andy Roddick after holding a match point.

With Roddick back to defend his title, Lleyton Hewitt aiming for a fourth crown in five years and Tim Henman looking to break through for the first time, it will not be easy.

Former Wimbledon champion Goran Ivanisevic, 1997 Stella Artois winner Mark Philippoussis and last year’s runner-up Sebastien Grosjean will also be looking to stop the American, as will World No.3 Guillermo Coria and Thai star Paradorn Srichaphan.

Agassi competed at the Stella Artois Championships for the first time in 2000. He reached the third round on that occasion and last year led Roddick in the final set in the semi-finals before his countryman came back to win.

A Wimbledon champion in 1992, Agassi has won all four of the Grand Slam tournaments (Wimbledon and the Australian, French and US Opens). The American will hope that success at the Stella Artois Championships leads to a second title at the All-England Club, just as it did for John McEnroe (1981 and ’84), Pete Sampras (1995) and Hewitt (2002).

Tournament Director Ian Wight has three further wild cards to award before the event gets under way.
