Here's hoping he beats Murray in the final...

:yeah: I would be happy if he plays against Gasquet too. But Murray is better, cuz he has chances to go to Shanghai.

MS Paris really changed the surface this year? Is this better to Rafa or doesn't make difference?

Gasquet can easily make it to Shanghai, in terms of points he is clearly in the mix...but his comments at Lyon made me think perhaps he doesn't particulary care if he makes it or not. Or maybe he was hoping for a rest and then to give his best at Paris. We'll see which Gasquet shows up.

Gonzalez has given Nadal trouble in the past, I'm not sure if it is the particular situation in which they played each time, or something about his game. Both have been having a tough time recently. But Haas could take out Gonzalez first.

But yeah, great draw for Nadal, but this surface is always tough for him no matter the draw.

Obviously a very good draw for Raf - but I think we should not cheer too early, as it's still HARDCOURT (and we all know that it's not his fav surface to say the least...) but yeah, he sure has good chances here!

Vamos, Raf, take your points here! :worship:

Sadly, it is not such thing as a good draw for Rafa on this damn surface. Our hopes to see him in final are a little unrealistic. I'll only enjoy watching him. ;)

What he said at Lyon?

Gasquet has a beautiful tennis, he is very talented. But, for now, I think Murray deserves go to Shanghai more than Gasquet. Murray is more determined. He couldn't play RG and Wimbledon, and even so, is struggling to make it to MC.

About Rafa, is a very good draw, but good for Hard court players. For Rafa, I think is always troublesome and difficult.Specially when Gonzo and Youzhny are in the draw. I'm not confident in Rafa's great performance. But I'm cheering for this.:bounce: :bigclap:

Rafa is playing doubles as well (with Feli). :)

I can't say I expect too much in this tournament despite the good draw. He has a chance to get to the final of course, but there are players in his half that can trouble him if they are in good form and Gonzo/Youzhny have some momentum reaching QF/SF this week respectively. We shall see...

He said something along the lines of "my knees hurt, this isn't a good surface for me, I need to get to SF for any points, blah blah blah" before the Tsonga match.

I just read this, though:

"GASQUET COULD BE DONE FOR YEAR: France's Richard Gasquet of France saw his Shanghai hopes fade after a 6-4, 6-4 defeat against compatriot Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Gasquet said he felt pain in his knee and was doubtful for next week's Paris Masters Series, which would eliminate his Shanghai hopes."

 Sometimes I think Gasquet isn't persistent enough to go and stay in the top 5. He is very talented, but needs more effort. Anyway, I hope he feels better till his first game.

Anyone knows when will be Rafa's first match? Probably wednesday again  ?

This was Rafas best year ever to become number 1, All the way up to that Choke in the 5th set (No im not holding it against him, but he choked away those 4 break points before Federer was able to wake up and play his best tennis... which ud expect being so close to the wimbledon crown).

Does anyone know if he visited that italian doctor again to heal those knees? Is that what afflicted him in Madrid or was he just tired from the match against murray?

You know ive been observing him and finally figured out a couple of reasons he really struggles on hard courts that may not have been discussed yet. The first major reason is that he is generating his own pace rather than using the pace of the court and using the pace of his opponents shots, its most apparent in his returns, rarely do you ever see him move forward when returning, people keep saying "move in closer for the return" but that "Advantage" is almost completley taken away when ur not moving into the actual return, taking yourself and (more importantly) your strings forward to the ball. He usually moves sideways (or for second serves backwards) then muscle it, he thinks "Be more aggressive with the return" means hit it back harder/go for a winner/stand in closer, but its actually more about using the pace of the serve, and "Taking it earlier" (Making contact out further in front of your body even if your not standing right on the baseline), its great that hes standing in closer to return serves (Although ive seen him standing in the same position for 1st and 2nd serves It would all CLICK if he moved closer to the baseline to return second serves, I think he would notice the big difference when that slower serve is kicking up and hes just reacting to it), but its the manner in which he makes the return that will make the difference.

Also standing there with more of a backhand (closer to continental) grip, just for the return will make a HUGE, difference, i myself didnt want to do this when i was first told this because i didnt believe one could get enough spin to keep it in, however using this grip keeps the racket face open, and when your simply reacting to the ball (with an image of where you would place a forehand or a backhand... cross court each one to make the opponent on the run), the racket head speed adds alot of spin to the ball, also holding a backhand or continental grip means ur ready for the serve to the backhand, if anyone here has played tennis you know that you can at least get the ball back with any type of grip on the forehand, even the pros dont always get back to their preferred grip when they are rushed on the forehand and yet are still able add more wrist pronation to compensate (which is no problem for a one off shot).

What kills him the most is the amount of work his putting into breaking the opponents serve, when you can pressure your opponent by showing them "hey hit the lines or ill kill yah... even if i miss it wont be by much", if you can do that time and time again, the opponent usually thinks "oh crap I Have to get more returns in on his serve no more free swinging i HAVE TO BREAK", they move back, they step out of that "zone" holding becomes easier.

In concluding, I know from personal experience that I always had trouble against big servers, even if i got the return back it didnt really hurt em, I know im not a pro and have never faced 140 mph serves, but i have played against some really REALLY big guys with ridiculous serves, one day i went out and played doubles against 1 guy with a ridiculously fast flat serve and the other one with a huge kicker that was also really fast, I was standing on the baseline to return these guys serves and i was making contact with every return from the 1st point (I only missed a few), As my confidence grew i started gettin angles (or depth) and pace I never dreamt of (just using their serve with no backswing), eventually they started trying to take pace off it, and I thought "ill move back to attack it" and i got aced several times and felt I couldnt pick the serve. When i moved forward again i was back to hitting those great returns, It REALLY helps getting into the zone. Also they tried to hit me off the court with groundies But i was so into that reactive zone that I was just taking all their pace and sending it back, (if ur wondering the score was 6-1 6-1 to my partner and I).

Of course rafa is on a totally different level but this same basic principle will work with him, u see federer use it against roddick, he is just locking in on the ball and letting himself react to the ball, u dont see him hit agassi-esque returns against roddick either, just reacting and letting whatever happens, happen.

I got more stuff to say about Rafas game (from a discussion with a physics professor who works with tennis players)) but Ive said enough already :P

Oh almost forgot to add, this is rafas most forgiving draw of the year most importantly because for the first time since(I believe Indian welss) Djoko is on the other side of the draw, (why dont u guys like him?), and murray is there too, most of his worst opponents are there, I just hope Rafa plays his best tennis and doesnt get injured again, cos this tournament is really being pretty much handed to him on a silver platter. (And hes rarely ever capitalised on that in the past).

Also Richard isnt the motivated type, i dont think he'll ever win a slam, his best chance is at Wimbledon, and hes got a good chance at the USO, but its too hot in Aust and the FO demands too much grinding, He knows his talent stacks up with anyone in the world and hes easily top 5 material, maybe thats why he doesnt really care too much beyond winning a few titles, making a few good showings (finals semis) at big events, and showing off his talent by taking a few sets and maybe winning a few matches against the guys at the very top.

Spanish sports people who have excellent results in France often get a cold shoulder.

GOD DAMN IT! I just typed up two really long posts, the first I lost 'cause I closed the browser, the second I lost because the internet disconnected right before I pressed submit.

So here is the extremely abreviated version:

Didn't Nadal lose BP's from Fed's Aces/Unreturnables while Djokovic lost because of own DF's/UE's? Not really choke, right?

Yes, may have been last #1 chance, Wimbledon loss devastating (potential points lost there and knee injury helped cause him to waste more potential points from really easy USO draw (though Ferrer played out of his mind).

Actually friend, if u watch the wimbledon final, he had 4 break points in the 5th set, 2 in each of the first 2 service games, it wasnt until it was back at deuce that federer hit unreturnables and aces. But earlier in the match it may have been true, i just distinctly remember those 4 break points. I mean he didnt do a major choke thing, grass court tennis is so close but i remember federer almost pushing the ball back in resignation, but many forget that and only remember how he played after his second service game. Also that match turning point at 6-5 15-30, when rafa had the easy short forehand that he knew would give him the break points and would give him the set cos roger was faultering, but he good too excited and hit it into the net. Those are the points i remember.

Also I agree with all the rest of ur post about wimbledon loss, knees, ferrer (although he did have quite a few chances against him, i reckon if he had not been injured this hard court season he actually coulda turned that match around but thats rafas curse!!!)

I dunno I think Wawrinka is being understimated, Rafa is playing horribly, His eyes didnt look right either, and hes looking VERY unsure about his movement, i havent seen him look this bad since before Indian Wells and even back then he didnt look to be in so much pain.

Hes standing so far back now, and to return serve hes moving back when hes hitting, Volandri has one of the worst serves in the top 100 and still was making rafa work in that first set, Wawrinka also has that killer backhand thats gonna cause big probs,

Rafa was constantly hitting the ball short and even though they were short they didnt really have enough pace or topspin to do anything.

Hes moving the ball around yes and thats positive play, but hes not really in the kind of shape, nor is his game, to take out any serious players, And Wawrinka looks like hes having one of those moments like PHM had in Canada this year where he just swings without thinking, that is very dangerous for rafa at this moment (he can hurt himself pretty bad win or lose).

I actually dont think I want to see him make the finals here cos itll be too much work, im just hoping he can do well at the MAsters cup because with his form and health I dont think he will be able to make much of a showing, he just looks ... well too me it reminded me of the Cincinnatti match against monaco, not good (And could face youzhny should he make it past wawrinka).

DAMN IT!! I wish someone could tell him to go speak to robert landsorp, hed win the australian open if he trained with him for 2 months).

I know A fit david!!! Theres hope for us all. Hes got a new team with him, im really really hoping that this means its gonna carry on to next year, i honestly beleive if hes fit he would be motivated to win more and maybe got for a big one in aust.

:wavey: Yeah, I hope his inury problems are behind him and he can train well and is motivated for the next year. :D
The same goes for Rafa too of course. :)

Edit: Naah, Wawa might have an off-day today. ;) Uhhh, and Rafa might all of a sudden start to play more aggressively and come into the court more. ;)

3rd match on Court Central for Rafa tomorrow. I'll finally be home for his match tomorrow. Misha lost the 2nd set to Haas 1-6 and complained about some stomach problems. So it might be vs Haas tomorrow after all! :p ;)

Edit: Bleh, it will be Misha after all. Trust a nutcase like Haas to win the 2nd set 6-1 and then all of sudden lose the plot and the decisive set 3-6. At least Misha won't be in top shape.

If Baghy beats Boredo and Nadal wins it, that would be near perfect results for me this tournament.

To the natural (that was your name, right?):

That may be, in my original posts I made it more clear that my memory was really foggy. I don't remember thinking "stupid Rafa, stop choking," but I do remember thinking "haha, Djokovic is choking." I'd have to watch it again...

I wasn't paying too much attention :o But Misha got some pill for the stomach during the 2nd set (you could see smth started to bother him in the 2nd set) but no treatment. Maybe it was just something he ate before the match.
And then he kinda complained to Lahyani that he had to play so late.
I mean not complaining like in whining or anything, he was just feeling sleepy I guess, after all it was almost 1 am in Paris already, he was smiling in the 3rd set and after the match, he's a merry fellow and always with a fighter/good attitude (like Rafa).

The commentators were saying it wasn't fair that Rafa and Roger never had to play late Matches, but they are ranked #1 and #2 in the world. No it woulda been better if u had a pick of him giving the finger :D, after that win against youzhny definatley, even up 5-2 in the 1st i didnt believe he could do it, I love to be proved wrong, so for the rest of the week and throughout the masters im gonna doubt him cos he always wins when i dont believe he can!

He truely is a great player cos although Micha was tired Rafa was constantly moving the ball around, im not happy with the quality of his game cos he doesnt it the lines and his normal cross court forehands just dont move away enough for the opponents to be on the defence, but i never expected him to look so positive and play with such an aggressive mindset after the long lost look in his eyes in earlier rounds.

I dont think it woulda been a more interesting match for me, i woulda had a heart attack if it went into a decider, and micha was still able to push from 2-5 down up to a break point at 4-5 in the first, and even the 2nd was close for a while until he finally just had nothing. I dont believe rafa was yet confident enough to beat micha if he were closer to 100%

If anyone watched rafa hit some ridiculous passing shots reminiscent of 05 the end of season when he was playin some great instictive tennis, the fire looked to be slowly coming back into his eyes, hes still not playing like IW but for someone who has sufferred with injuries this season and has been forced to cope with alot of let downs mentally (Wimbledon most of all then bad American season and probably a lack of confidence from that), hes sure coming back pretty quick.

Hopefully baghdatis can bring out the best in him and he can win by playing some brilliant attacking tennis (Sorry Marcos my man, I dont want u to win yet especially cos i know i cant trust u to take a win here and further urself as a world beater!).

Lets just say hypothetically that he makes the final (im not gonna get ahead of myself cos its always been bad luck in the past), I would really rather see him play David Win or lose.

Guys I dont think he needs to give the french another reason to hate him dont you think? plus can u imagine the hatred hes gonna get if he plays Gasguet in the final and were to win (although itd be a tough ask since richard would be playing his best tennis with the french behind him). Also I want Nalby to go out this year on a high.

In any case VAMOS NALBY AND NADAL! (Please lose Richard and Marcos!)

I'm not so sure about this. Yes, he has matured (which I'm glad to see, to be honest), but it's not like he lost all of his sense of humour. He can still be pretty funny at times, and even naive and cheerful like he used to be!
But yeah, it's obvious he has become a lot more serious, especially considering his tennis career. Not sad to see that at all, to be true. ;)

Im not sad too. This is what usually happens when the people grows up. And was expected to take place with Rafa too. Of course he didn't change his sense of humour. It's just different, not the same. He is a mild and gentle guy like before, but maybe more restrained and moderate in his way. And I think younger Rafa was more funny and extroverted than the mature Rafa though. :)

Im not saying i dont like when he speaks english, its just that i like most people (especially those who dont know much about him outside of the 4 slams), find him to be a little predictable and boring and businesslike in English (which ud expect since he doesnt wanna say the wrong thing).

Yeh sorry guys but im gonna say this, all throughout that first set and most of the second i was saying "STOP F@#$ING AROUND", it all went down hill from 3-0 with break points for the double break on Baghdatis' serve, he starting screwin around and being too cocky, like i saw the intensity drop 10% and the aggression went down, instead of closing down on baghdatis when he had those break points, he opted to keep the rallies longer and wear him down because i got this flash of "business as usual" from him if you know what i mean.

He woulda been better off had he gone out and made the unforced errors to lose the bps instead of letting baghdatis calm down and find his range. After that I dont think his game was aggressive for most of the rest of the match, he was hitting it really short, and thats cos hes whipping the ball, when u whip it like Rafa u gotta get loads of height over the net to get the depth ESPECIALLY on fast courts (no clay he does that and the ball is still rising as it reaches the back fence so its fine). He was doing it instinctively at IW and in flashes during the wawrinka, Youhzny and Bagy match.

He is going to be completley destroyed I mean Nalby is playing like hes been doin this the whole season, this is the perfect surface for him. Rafas only chance woulda been over 5 sets cos he might get a chance to wear him down a little but Rafa did so much running, david barely moved.

Also the biggest problem may be this, Rafa is ALWAYS on the back foot when returning EVEN the second serves, Nalby only got 47% of first serves in against Federer, and for most of the match only 33% against Gasguet, both very good returners, yet he straight setted them, even against a very good returner like Ferrer when nalby wasnt playing well he didnt get broken till the last set cos his back up game was so good and his serves under pressure were great. SO Rafas weak returns that sit up vs Nalbys ability to beat tough players when not getting many serves in= possible 6-1 6-2 again.

I honestly do think though, that if rafa could have played like IW and Miami hed be able to put up a strong fight, just that David is so ready to beat him and is so strong under enormous pressure, and hes faltered twice against federer once against Gasguet once against Ferrer yet still snapped out of it and beat em.

Rafa May God be with you, cos youll need all the divine help you can get (Sorry guys but What bag was doin to those short shots early on, is what Nalby will do from the word go until Game set match is called).

Isn't this the same Rafa that played 2 weeks in a row, week off, two weeks in a row, week off, 5 weeks in a row, getting to the final in all but one of the tournaments a bit earlier in the year. I don't believe he gets tired too easily. If he loses it'll be because he's outplayed.

Nalbandian was too good today, but I'm not happy with the way Nadal played. I know much of that can be attributed to Nalby's game matching brilliantly (for him  ) against Rafa's, but Rafa's attitude after going down the 2nd break in the 2nd set was disappointing to say the least. And his serving :help: He needs to take a looooong look at his hc game, and why it falls away so much every year after Wimbledon.

That being said, I'm glad he played Paris. I thought he did well against Wawrinka, Youzhny and Baghdatis. I hope today's humiliation doesn't hurt his confidence for Shanghai.

Let's all remember the last time Rafa lost a Masters Series Final (also featuring a nasty final set bagel) he had a week off then won the next big tournament. :yeah:

Awww Yana, no spanking for baby Rafa. He was sad enough. :awww: :awww:
Hmm, Rafa started quite well, better than vs Baggy and was suprisingly aggressive on his own serve till 4-4 and then all of a sudden. Seemed like he kinda got tired but it's not like he's played heaps lately. But David was just on fire and too good today! :worship: Rafa is not known to just give up and get down on himself so I expected more but ah well.... :o At least he looked cute as always *fangil mode off*
And David looks fitter than ever indeed so obviously he's been able to train well lately! :yeah: All kudos to David! :worship:

Anyway, I the knees are OK and Rafa can get a good preparation for the TMC.

As I said before, in the 2nd set Rafa was pretty languid and downcast, maybe indifferent, gave up, instead struggle. His attitude was really revolting and sad. I read he saying that when the score was 4-4, he remembered the last match, in Madrid, when Nalby won easy, and he was very nervous after remember this.

His mind and confidence are not ok.

And he said he will go to Shanghai really sad. I think he needs recover his confidence till MC.

But I agree Yana, he needs some spanks...

It's sad to see Raf lose like this, but I think people should be realistic and admit that he had no game against Nalby-On-Fire. Nalby has been playing OTHERWORDLY tennis the past few weeks and it's no shame to lose from him. I doubt any other player (and that includes Fed!) would've got a better result against him today.

Raf...   - get a good rest, enjoy Mallorca & your home friends, and get back in good shape in Shanghai!

I agree ClayBuzza, Nalby is playing really fantastic tennis. He is incredible. This Rafa's loss was expected to me. But he could play better, Nalby humiliated him cuz he played very bad. His service was awful! As I_mac said, he needs look at his game in hc immediately, cuz his tactics are deficients in HC. And he could struggle more than today. But he is exhausted too.

Hi mimi :wavey: Long time no see :)
Sorry to contradict you dear, but David WILL BE in Shangai... :p as the 9th man, but he could play since ARod and Davydenko don't seem to be in a good shape at the moment...
I was in Bercy yesterday and all I could say is David was way too strong for Rafa, and for anybody ! I've never seen anybody playing tennis at this level, and it was even more impressive from the terraces...
I felt so sad for Rafa, he looked so disappointed  but there's really nothing he could do...Of course, his serve could have been better, but even then he would have been beaten all the same, maybe not 6-0 but 6-4...
David's been playing UNSEEN tennis for a few weeks, and as you all said, nobody could beat him anyway.
All I hope is Rafa gets to Shangai rested and willing to fight, and, supposing David plays there, it would be a wonderful revenge if Rafa beat him in the final !! :bounce:

Hi Ti-Anne! Nice to see you here again! :wavey:

Well, of course Davydenko and Roddick won't give up their spots in Shanghai and the money that goes with it just so, but they might simply not be able to play if they're still injured. I don't know what's wrong with Roddick but if Davydenko will not be able to serve with his shoulder then he just cannot play. Remember how Rafa tried but he still couldn't play in Shanghai 2005.
Or it might get worse again after one match. So David might get to play in Shanghai indeed. He seems to be on a hot streak like Gonzo was at the AO, we'll see how long this will last. :)

Nope I couldn't get an autograph, I was too far for that...But never mind, I was there although I hadn't planned to go this year. Of course, I regretted this when I saw who was in the final...I thought : my two favourite players in a final in Paris, that'll never happen again, I can't miss it !!
So on waking up yesterday morning, I decided to catch the first train to Paris and try to get a seat on the black market, which I did ! It was a bit expenseive, but worth it !
I got a quite good seat behind the baseline, 15th row, and I enjoyed the whole thing from A to Z, although, as I said I really felt sorry for poor Rafa
But David was soooooo extraordinary, and he's been through so many bad times that I think he deserves this, considering his talent. Don't worry, Rafa will come back for sure, he's a great champ too, he'll bounce back but I think he needs rest, I don't want him to get injured again. I love him too much for that... :inlove:

Oh, that was great then Ti-Anne! :D
I also like both guys so I wasn't too sad that Rafa lost to David. Besides they're both friends. :)

But Rafa must serve better in Shanghai and play more closer to the baseline or in court, he dropped back to playing 3 m behind the baseline again vs Marcos and David and playing too short balls and that's what I didn't like. Of course it was also due to David's excellent play.

Denise, but Nalby can go to Shanghai yet if Roddick or Davydenko pulls out. He is ninth in the Race. I think this is a big trouble for Rafa. I fear other demolition.

I'm sure Rogi won't actually be jumping-with-joy either if Nalby would play the TMC... I wonder whether both Raf & Rogi have already been BEGGING Roddick and/or Davydenko to "Please turn up in Shanghai and PLAY!"

No, I definetely couldn't do that, from a materialistic point of view, and also because I respect Rafa too much to dare do that ! And he impresses me too much too. You know, last year in MC, as I was walking around the site, I ran into him as he was going to train, he was alone, I saw him come toward me, and I just froze, I couldn't move anymore, so I just watched him pass me by...

I disagree my friend, Gonzo's hot streak was really just that a hot streak, this is the kind of tennis Nalby has always been capable of, hes the agassi of this generation, nobody playing their best tennis can dicate off the forehand and backhand like him, rafa and federer do it with their forehands and their backhands are stronger when they are confident but Nalby is almost always equal on both wings.

Also his serving was poor this week (48% against federer 46 against gasguet) and he was still so focussed thatt he was able to win, and he was serving smart too, Gonzo was just employing the "chip until u get a short ball then blast it" tactic, which worked wonders against hewitt blake and nadal (and yeh even Tommy cos by that stage he was on fire).

Nalby has been playing well even when in all kinds of trouble and all kinds of pressure, hes a cleaner ball striker than Rafa or Federer could ever dream of being.

hey, wasn't rafa played in Brazil Open in 2005 and won  ?

no way he will play in HK, no tennis tourney since 2003 as our govt probidden any advertisements for cigarettes after that, so no sponsor for the only atp event "Salem Open" for years

since you are Brazil, the busy body mimi wants to ask, do you find Gisele B pretty? coz in my eyes, she is pretty but now that extreme, so i wonder whether she earns so much? i always find the sponsors some fools for paying the modesl/athetic so much :p

i met pete in 1996 Marlboro Open, he was a bit cool and only signed 2 authgraphs, even i did get close to him, he was very handsome at that time, but sadly he lost most of his hairs now

monica: i met her for the first time at 2000, an exhibition match she played with Serena which she won in the 3rd set tiebreaker and the last time i saw her, it was at the 2003 Watsons Challenge, i have to say, she is super nice, i got her autograph and even gave her a little gift, but sadly i was alone so no one could take photo for me with her :(

goran: met him in 2005, the senior tour, he is still looking young and goregous, and fit, he was very naughty and even removed the shoes of the chair empire, of course i got his autograph, but no photo with him coz again, i was alone (none of my friends like tennis)
