Sorry, cannot translate it, hopefully some friendly Spanish speaking MTF member will be nice to do it :).

Filip forging a storybook career despite defeat

"Filip Krajinovic, a native of Serbia, deftly uses his fingers when you type in your cell phone Blackberry. For a short time, gives rest to check rates and thumbs his racket. After the look, continues with the virtual communication.
So Filip, fair-haired and grim, calms their anxieties prior to compete against Argentine qualifier by Guido Pella of V Challenger of Guayaquil.

The European tennis player of 17 years does not speak or understand a bit of Spanish. Leaning his arms on his long legs, Filip follows battleship to chatting, while his coach, the Colombian Pablo Mayorga, visualize how wet the clay court Tennis Club.

"It is a form of concentration before playing, I think it is in contact with the bride," said Mayorga, who is coach of the IMG, the company that manages sports rights Filip.

The company, which also works with the shrunken Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, sponsored the career of the Serbian and pays the fees of coffee. They reside in Bradenton, Florida (United States).

"Filip trains at Nick Bollettieri's academy, one of the best," the Colombian coach.
The moment of marginalizing the cell to compete with the River Plate. Input, Filip ratified the immense confidence that Mayorga waiver.

"In 3 years, I am sure he will be in the Top Ten," he predicts. And the Serbian demonstrates its potential with strong returns, others elegant. The first heat was won easily 6-2.

But the recovery came from Pella to stop the encouragement Filip winners. The second and third sets were won by 7-6 and knocked them out twice in the tournament.
Now, among the plans of coach and pupil, is the intervention in a tournament in Lima (Peru) and then finish the sports tour in America. "

Now...where to start :). Recap of 2009 first :) .

Last year started with Filip being inside top 600 as a 16 year old and I think a lot of people expected a lot from him cos he ended previous year pretty well with SF in Knoxville beating Kendrick in the process.
He decided to try his luck in challengers (and even some ATP events) with having faith that only few good results would get him far enough into rankings to stop playing futures. But results didn't come. He managed to get into main draw in Bucamangra and into QF there but that was only tournament where he gained points in first 6 months of the year. He played 12 tournaments in total till June and then he realized he isn't ready yet. He had a few good wins, like beating Kevin Kim easily but he would often be stopped in final round of qualifications and thus he wouldn't get any points. Game had become more physical than ever and him being 16 with expected ups and downs didn't help him to face bigger stage. He showed us he can play with those guys but he went there several months too early.
So when June came he decided to play some futures to get his confidence back and to gain some points. He played few US based futures and got into 2 finals. He started to play more on clay at that point. It proved to be good decision both for his results and for his long term game on clay. Experience on clay he got in those few months will help him a lot in the future. He had sort of break trough in San Sebastian challenger reaching final where he was tired and was beaten by red hot De Bakker. He had beaten Eysseric than Ramirez-Hidalgo (maybe biggest win in 2009) and Olivier Patience there. Then Banja Luka followed and 2nd round with Gimeno-Traver... hard fought battle with missed 2 match points and Traver went to win Banja Luka easily after with dropping only few games per match till the end. Had Filip won that match he would have won Banja Luka I'm sure. He would have easier opponents and crowd cheering for him and that would be real break trough and we would see him in AO qualifications now. But new chances will come, we have to be patient.
After that he had solid result in Ljubljana and then he made a big break till the end of October. He needed one good result till the end of the year to ensure place in AO qualifications. His team decided he should continue to play on clay in South America instead of playing hard court events in US where he was already in entry lists. This might have been bad decision since he had 4 consecutive defeats in South America, altough he had really bad luck with draws. His aggressive game should be suited for faster courts so he would probably score few wins in US but it didn't happen and there's no need to be too unhappy about it.
We should be happy about his progress in 2009. He showed us he can play on clay as well and that's one big positive thing from last year. As Bollettieri said he was maturing from a boy into young man and changes were visible. I'm sure he will keep up good work in 2010.
That's it for now, will post something about 2010 expectations a bit later or tomorrow :).

Great recap of 2009 :worship:

The beginning of 2009 was promising with first three tournaments and result wise improvements (he gained points in Iquique first ;)).

But as year went on it became clear that he surely got the game but somehow couldn't capitalize on it sometimes. And that might be because of his psychological maturity (and Mr Bollettieri said it is) so, yes, it's up to him but he can't really do anything about it.

We should be happy about his progress in 2009.

It really was a great win. And looking at the draw, he's now got a great chance of getting plenty of points here. Pretty nailbiting though. Alves hardly dropped a point on his serve in the decider, until 5-2, then just fell apart. Even serving at 5-5, he had a 40-0 lead and ended up losing his serve.

Hawaii incoming in the end of next week, I guess he'll play qualies there. It seems he's on the list for Dallas challenger week after and then for ATP events in San Jose and Memphis. He might have some WC promise there or something cos if he plays those it means he'll miss Belgrade challenger. Anyway he decided to play on hard in the beginning of this season so let's see how it turns out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lor0TfB7ugc&feature=player_embedded

I guess most of you saw this clip. I wanted to say some of my expectations but most of it is in there.
What he needed to do in offseason were his fitness and his serve on the first place and it seems he really did that. Bigger serve will help him a lot on faster courts and fitness will help him to last trough tough matches and to have enough energy to have several good matches in a row.
Win over Alves in Salinas was very good one since it was his first macth in new season and I didn't expect much to be honest. The loss in that grueling 3 hours match in 2nd round was tough but it will help him and thing that he lost first set in TB after 75 minutes and then had enough energy to come back and take next set was a good sign. He has abilities but he needs to learn how to use them properly. I think we'll enjoy watching his progress this year. I would be happy to see him in USO qualifications and inside top 150 by the end of the year but I secretly hope he can do a bit more.

Radalek

Watched it live :) .
First and biggest impression is his serve which improved leaps and bounds. He got loads of free points from it and is looking very promising. When he gets more strength and grows a bit more it will be powerful weapon combined with his amazing volleys. His volleys are beautiful and he's still only 17. Ground strokes look good as well, backhand more than forehand.
He is, naturally, still raw and needs to learn to control his aggression. He often goes for waaay more than needed especially from backhand side. Later in the match when importance of it overwhelmed his desire for aggression he played more patiently and tried to dictate and set up better situations for his backhand dtl or for net approach. It looked really good.

Finally he gained some points and Bogdanovic is easier opponent than Devvarman and it's up to Filip really. If he can contain him self and doesn't make too many unforced errors when serving he will sooner or later be able to contain Bogos big serve and will prevail, I'm sure of it. What he needs now are the matches and since there's no seeds left until semi in his part of the draw he might get both, matches and experience together with loads of points. Good luck tomorrow :) .

From Gemax site:
Filip Krajinović - new hope of Serbian tennis
2010-02-17 21:57:27

After many turnarounds, tight games, lost nerves and attractive points, Filip Krajinović left the centre court of Gemax Open complex greeted with loud and long applause. Young Serbian hope fought back from a set down to beat no.8 seed India’s Somdev Devvarman 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 in 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Filip started this year’s tournament like last year, losing the first set. ”It has become standard for me to lose the opening set. I need some time to get into the rhythm, but I’m trying to fix that''- Filip is aware what he should on in the future.

World no.141 Devvarman made a break in the fourth game and then held for 4-1 lead. He won the first set 6-3.

The stands were already packed at the beginning of the second set. The audience was in a state of complete euphoria when Filip took a 3-0 lead. He earned a match point at 5-3, but failed to capitalise on it. Devvarman fought back and levelled the result to 5-5. The set went to a tiebreaker, Filip took it 8-6.

Krajinović broke his opponent’s serve twice in the decisive set for 6-3 to advance into the second round.

”I played well. I know his game style. We met one year ago. Tomorrow’s match is going to be tough. We will see what I'm capable of.”

Filip, who will be 18 in ten days, is currently no.365 in the ATP Rankings. ”My goal for this season is to get into top 200, but I’m aware it will not be an easy thing to do.”

Serbian version:
Filip Krajinović - naša blistava nada!
2010-02-17 21:38:19

Mladost je pobedila! Posle mnogo preokreta, neizvesnih gemova, iskidanih živaca i atraktivnih poena, Filip Krajinović je napustio Centralni teren Gemax-voog kompleksa praćen gromoglasnim aplauzom.

Well...Bogdanovic served lights out in the first set but Filip was one that gave it to him really. Couple of bad decisions in game he was broken and at break point he made a nice setup for his forehand but went for too much where it was not needed. He would have won that point if he just played safe spinned forehand CC but he wanted to paint the line again and missed ofc.
Same story in the second where Bogdanovic took first chance right away and just served it out although Filip had chances to come back.
Filip needs to work on his footwork and needs to bulk up a bit. Experience and better decision making will come in time but footwork training and gym is what he can do right now.
He's on the list for some US 15k futures week before Indian Wells and he said something about possible qualy WC either there or in Miami. After that he will head to Europe again and begin with clay season.

i think filip will win this. that would be great for filip, on the other hand mario definitely wouldn't too much suffer because of loose cause this is just one little step in his comeback. but again mario serving like mad these days. that for WC was pretty sure.

At the moment last accepted player in qualification is ranked 323...A lot of players decided not to play so fields isn't that strong. If Filip had won 2-3 more matches in past few months he would be in without WC. Anyway, draw tonight, good luck :) .

Hmm, Gaston Gaudio up in the first qualifier.

Well, as an unseeded, he had to draw a seed, and i guess a clay court specialist, who's not had any real form for ages, is a pretty good draw. I'd be pretty dissapointed if he doesn't get through that round (and at least then, he'll get a few points for his efforts)

Dustin Brown or Smyczek in the final qualifying round, as long as he gets through. That's a toughee, Brown's been in cracking form this year, and has a pretty brutal serve once it gets going.

Not impossible though. Favourable draw for once, considering what he could have had. I'm predicting a straight sets win, and a tough, three set defeat.....

Springer89
03-09-2010, 05:09 PM
I'm not happy with the draw.
Gato is not to be underestimated, he might be struggling while attempting to come back to top 100 but he's a Grand Slam title holder and a player with the highest carrer high (with Schuettler) in the draw and the experience is on his side. And I agree that Filip can win this match.

It can't get harder for me as a fan than to see my two favourites drawn against each other. :crying2: But I can get over it...

Good luck today, Fićo!

Not the best start from Filip, 2-5 down in the opening set. Had a chance on Snobels serve early on, so not impossible, but needs to improve. Hernych losing as well as we speak.

Tristanslav
04-28-2010, 10:46 AM
Second serve conversions are killing him, both sides of the game. He's only won 1 of 6 behind his own second serve, whilst only winning 2 of 10 off the Snobel second serve. Bizaarely, he's won 8/19 points off of Snobels first serve (42%), which is huge. Maybe he's struggling to generate his own pace off of the slower second serve.

Either way, the first set has gone on the second set point. 2-6. Hernych loses his first set by the same score. Both players need to improve to give us the quarter final i predicted yesterday!!

Still continuing my solo chat, but hopefully it will give you guys some insight if you only catch the result... ;)

Crucial hold for Filip next, as he squanders 4 breakpoints (3 off of Snobels second serve), at 4-3, you got the feeling he would probably lose his serve in the next game, but, despite a wobble (40-0 to 40-30), Filip holds to lead 5-4. That eighth game lasted 25 minutes by the way.

Yet another game in which Filip holds break points (that makes every service game for Snobel in the second set), and again, misses on the second serve of his opponent. This time of course, they're not just breakpoints, but set points. Two this time, Snobel holds under pressure again, and i'm wondering if this is ever going to happen.

5-5, he'll be very dissapointed if he loses this one. He's clearly had the better of it, but is on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Maturity maybe? Snobel does, after all, have an extra 12 years as a pro on him.

I make that 8 breakpoints missed off his opponents second serve in this set by the way. Frustrating.

Danger in the next as he trails 15-30......

Tristanslav

Yep. Snobel takes his second breakpoint (he's converted 3 of 4 compared to 1 of 11 from Fico) to lead 6-5. He's not out of this, the young Serb, but he has to take any opportunity that comes his way in this next game, because he's run out of chances now. The set rolls into the second hour, 62 minutes so far.

Typical. Easiest service game of the match for Snobel who shoots out to 40-0. Fico pulls back the first matchpoint but Snobel takes the second, and Fico is out 2-6, 5-7. This one will hurt, no question. Far, far too many chances to not take any in that second set, and his second serve was easy pickings for his opponent.

Decent week, but should have been better.

From my point of view, Fico needs many matches. He doesn´t have to earn the big money for the moment, soo he should go back and play some futures to gain some matches and points. What iv´e known he hasent won an future tournament yet.

He still have an bright future, but he needs to step down and play some future tournaments to gain some confidence and points!

I believe in you Fico! :wavey:

It's difficult to say. I mean, there's a lot of positives to take from the majority of the matches he's losing, even today. But yes, he's just not getting the points at the moment. It's a fine line though. He takes one of those set points, at 5-4, and surely, he'd have been favorite to go on and win the match against Snobel, and put himself in a winnable quarter final match. He's not a million miles away from pushing on, and i guess it must be frustrating for him.
