So sad...all those nice wins and now hard defeat...and in final again. I hope it doesn't affect his confidence again. I expected tough match cos Mazarakis was on the verge of top 100 not so long ago and he achieved that on clay. Filip doesn't play that well on the clay and I guess being inexpereienced, tired, and maybe nervous took tool on him...Anyway, nice week in total. He will rise to #470 tommorow and to #450 when these points are calculated in 8 days. We were awaiting for his rise in rankings for a while now so we must be happy for him.
He's tired for sure so he might skip Pitsburgh tournament next week. If he doesn't lets hope he puts up good performance again and picks up some more points. After that he can take some rest and then prepare for hard court season. I really hope we'll see him on challengers soon again with some succes. Again, nice week Filip and keep your head up :) .

He's still on the list for Pittsburgh futures. If he's very tired he should go home, otherwise he should take a chance to gain some more points and then take a long rest.
What I want to know is will he participate in series of futures in Serbia in August, including one in his home town Sombor? Series start in Novi Sad (2 hours drive from Sombor) on 3rd of August, then there's one in Sombor, and in Subotica (one hour drive from Sombor) after. Nice chance to spend some more time at home and play some tournaments before departing for Florida for hard court season in September...

Yeah, he said he won't play in Serbia but I thought he meant about that series of Belgrade futures that were about to start then. If he is spending next month or two in Europe to be close to home it seems logical to play those three tournaments, especially that one in his home town. But lets see what happens. He will be # 440, not 450 next week, I calculated bad :) .

Does anybody knows what are his plans in next month or two? He definitely isn't on entry list for futures event in his home town on August 10. He's not on any challenger list in next few weeks and there is few in North America and 2 in Spain. His father mentioned some tournament in Spain but he isn't listed for any of them. I know he's resting at home now, I guess he took a bit longer break...

Filip will play 15k futures in Irun, Spain, on clay. It's starting on August 10. He's 2nd seed there so he should have easier draw, but its clay and it's Spain...so let's see how he handles it. Week after he's on the list for San Sebastian challenger, also in Spain. He's #27 on alternate list at the moment, so he's pretty high and should enter at least qualies easily. Don't know what will happen if he goes far in this futures week before...I hope that he rested and trained well while being home in this few weeks and that we'll see him breaking top 400 for start :) .

Radalek
08-14-2009, 10:58 PM
Yeah he did, didn't know that. Surprisingly hard defeat, but then again clay isn't exactly his favorite surface...He maybe wanted more rest before challenger and looked at this futures just as preparation, I hope so at least...But I don't mind if he plays on clay a lot at this time, experience will come handy in 2-3 years. Also it's good for players to spend more time on natural surfaces while growing, might prevent some future injuries, especially knee ones.

So he continues climbing without points gained, pretty strange effect of new ranking system as of this year but I don't mind :). When Irun points are added and if he manages to win a few matches in San Sebastian he might have good enough ranking to even get into main draw of some challengers. So, good luck Fico :).

Not at home so couldn't follow much what was happening but De Bakker is in form of his life winning challengers left and right so it wasn't unexpected. Filip was probably tired too.
Great, great week for him and us, his fans :). This was in Spain on clay, surface which isn't his best and that just makes it even better. His serve is still an issue, especially 2nd serve but that will come pretty soon when he grows up a bit more and mature a bit more physically. Really can't wait to see what player he will be after offseason preparations at the end of the year, it will be huge for him.
As for his future plans he is on the list for the Oviedo 15k futures next week and one 15k futures in Holland week after. If he decides not to take a rest but play them I hope those will be last futures events that he plays cos few wins there will bring him into top 300. After that he will most probably focus on challengers. He has some points to defend at the end of the year but if he has some more challenger success I hope he reaches rankings enough for AO 2010 qualies, that would be great :).
Anyway great week Filip, keep it up :worship: .

Missed his name in Alphen challenger list :) . He's on the list for futures in Holland week before so it makes sense. As for that German futures it's 10k one so it might be wise to skip it if he doesn't get wild card for challenger. No use to play week in and week out and to get your self further tired on 10k futures which won't benefit him that much.

He lost 1-6 4-6 :( .
I heard that he said that he was pretty tired in final 2 days ago so this wasn't unexpected. At age of 17 he would have ups and downs anyway, even if he wasn't tired. I'll say again that I can't wait for him to do off season preparations in December, those will be first really serious ones for him. To work on strength and fitness. It should have huge effect on his game. I hope his serve will start to come along with it so we might see him going places next year :) .
By that time we shouldn't be too unhappy with this kind of loses. They have it's good side, he'll realize how important physical side of game is, how important is to be able to endure several matches in a row or to keep it together after 2 hours or more in some tough matches.
Game it self evolved and is physical more than ever. How many 17-18 year old players do you see in top 100? None. Even 19 year old players, barely any. Nishikori was there but he is having tough times with injuries. Game has changed and is demanding more than ever. Nadal was/is physical freak of nature when he had his burst on the scene being 15-16. Murray and Djokovic are extremely talented and they made it into top 100 being barely 18. No one has done it after them. So highly touted Dimitrov is 18 and ranked at #226 and he is getting tons and tons of wild cards. And he's "by far the best prospect at his age". Guys are practically unable to compete with top 100 guys until they are physically ready for it and it takes time, till you're 18-19 or so. Tennis has changed.
So we should be happy that Filip is ranked this high and is making some noise being 17 and far from being physically mature. A year from now he'll be 18 and might breach into top 100 and that alone will be great signs of things to come. By that time we should cheer for him when he wins and not be sad when he loses because patience is a virtue and we are aware that we need to be patient with him and that he is coming along pretty nicely as he is now.
So, take a good rest next several days Filip and good luck in Holland futures next week :) .

That would be nice and wise choice :) . Altough Banja Luka is 3 weeks from now, one week after Alphen/Genova/Sevilla challenger where he is on the list too. So he could take 2 weeks rest and then possibly have 2 challengers in a row. After that clay season in Europe is practically over so I guess he will head back to Florida and prepare for series of hard court challengers in US that lasts till the end of the season.

Even if he loses he'll be ranked around #295 or close to it, so he enters top 300. What does it mean is that, for example, next week he would already be in main draw of any of the 3 tournaments he's listed on without waiting for some withdrawals. I guess then entering top 300 also means his futures career is behind him and we'll be able to watch him on challengers from now on. That will allow him to get points faster. I'm still certain he'll make it high enough for AO qualifications in January :). Keep it up!

Filip has 2nd round in Lubbock and semi trough qualies in Knoxville to defend till the end of the year. That semi was his best result till San Sebastian. They are both 50k tournaments and that would be 33 points in total to defend if he played under todays rules...
Anyway, he'll need some good results to made to...lets say 240 till the end of the year and to be able to get into AO qualifications. It seems hard to get there, but if he surprises us with 2 or 3 more great runs in challengers, why not?

Filip lost 7-6 (3) 1-6 6-7 (5)...and wasted 2 match points in process...What a shame :( ...

What a tense match to follow by livescore...Great first set by Filip with holding his nerve at start in some difficult games on his serve and great TB in the end.
Second set I expected him to try to break him right away but it went in completely other direction. After he was broken he practically gave up that set and conserved his energy for the third I guess.
In fourth at 2-1* he had 40-0* but wasted it and had 3 more break points in that game, 6 in total but Traver managed to hold. As expected Filip faded a bit in his next service game and was broken. But he managed to break back at 3-4* and at 5-4* he had 2 match points...in TB he had *5-3 but Traver took 4 points in a row...
Tough loss but he must take positives from it. He held his own against experienced clay courter and almost got him, just like Ramirez Hidalgo 3 weeks ago. He has few days to rest now and try to bounce back in Ljubljana challenger, I guess he'll play there next week.

Filip is officially in the main draw list in Ljubljana.
I really hope he will get some easier opponent in the first round. Seeing how easy job Traver had in quarters winning 6-2 6-2 Filip must feel bad. A win will get his confidence back. It would also be his third straight challenger with at least one win in main draw. Good luck :) .

I got my wish granted, I wanted easiest possible opponent in the first round so he can get confidence back after match with Traver and he got qualifier. True, I just checked qualifiers. Well, they are better choice than some seeded player, that's for sure. Anyway I am confident that he can beat any of them.
It was tough for him losing from Traver like he did. But what encourages me is that he didn't gave up after he missed 6 break points at the beginning of third set and after he was broken in very next game. He continued to fight and managed to get back in match and came so close of winning it. I am sure he will bounce back and I have feeling he's close to some major break trough. Maybe even in Ljubljana, because field somewhat weaker than in Banja Luka.
In fact, he's so technically sounded already, his footwork is great, his game is well rounded and he isn't afraid to finish points on the net even on clay...so only thing that's holding him back at the moment is physical side of the game. He needs to get fitter and stronger and has to add some weight to his serve and he will surge to top 100, I'm sure of it. All that will come soon, and I will repeat, offseason preparations in few months will be huge for him.
By the way Traver won his semifinal very easy too...Filip would have possibly won that challenger if he managed to convert one of those two match points...
But no use mourning of what's gone. Yeah, we believe in you, good luck next week :) .

Filip won 6-4 6-1 :) . Very convincing. Few weeks ago he had beat him 7-6 6-4 and Eysseric was playing pretty well in meantime so this tells us something about improvement that Filip is making. Also it tells us something about his mental state after that tough loss from Traver. All in all impressive performance.
Next one is Bozoljac...He won his first round 6-0 6-1 and he's kind of a guy you don't know what to expect from. Good luck!

Great win Filip is really improving his play.Bozoljac has really strong serve but on clay that is not so important so i think Filip has good chance.Bozoljac regained his confidence in Davis Cup where he played for Serbia in match against Uzbekistan so that can be a problem.I think that Filip is better player, but when you play against your own countryman you never know who will win(we all remember that Troicki win in Umag against Djokovic when Viktor was not even in top 100)

yeah, a great result today. Shame he's got Bozo in the next round, but would be a good indication of where he's out, because Ilija is a decent challenger level player. I'd be happy for Filip to put in two tight sets in the next round. If he can show he's on a similar level to Bozoljac, then we pretty much know he's a top 200 player, in all but rank.

Well, Filips through, he was trailing 3-1 when Bozo retired, so he's in the quarters. 13 points guaranteed and another little jump. He's got Lorenzi next, who's ranked 123, but he showed against Traver that he's not far from that level.
Interestingly, with the way the draw has gone, if he could get through Lorenzi, he'd surely have a gerat chance of the final, with no other seeds left in the draw!!

Too bad for Bozoljac, but Filip is trough and he will conserve his energy which is vastly important for him at this stage. If they are playing on friday he will practically get 2 days off and will be fresh against Lorenzi. Good luck :) .

I'm pretty sure this will push him to Serbian number 4, as well, because Bozo was defending title points here. Unless Pashanski does something crazy likes win in Palermo....

Ljubljana was before Banja Luka last year so Bozoljac already lost those points. Filip will have to get few more good results to push to Serbian #4 but I'm confident it will happen soon, maybe by the end of the year.

It might be on bet365 at least to follow livescore...I don't hope for some stream unfortunately.
And Lorenzi won 6-3 6-1 today after 6-0 6-1 the day before so...he seems to be in a good form. If Filip can pull this off then he's really making some nice progress.

Yes of course, you're right. And also his points from Lubbock drop this week, so unless he beats Lorenzi, he'll pretty much stay still anyway. But yeah, it's looking good for the progress right now either way. Last couple of months have been impressive for him.

I found this in challengers section of the forum, some guy from Ljubljana was watching Filip yesterday, interesting read:

"Followed Filip when he was hitting with his coach. At the end of training session they must have a habit to play football/tennis with small (handball size) ball. The rule is that ball mustn't land on floor two times. As I was following Murray/Delgado - Veić/Dodig match with one eye and training session with another eye, I didn't catch all the details but Filip suddenly got mad, cursed at his coach, threw racquet to his bag, took all equipment and rushed off the court. Coach was shocked as were all of us, who followed this incident and he was shouting to him "Filip! Filip come back" (mixture of hilarious and shocking) Well I hope it was nothing serious between 2 of them and it is just a small quarrel because Filip is still only 17 yrs old.
One hour later he started match against Bozoljac. Ilija opened it with fantastic game (hold-break-hold) and then had medical timeout (in the morning one friend told me that Bozoljac injured his ankle yesterday when playing doubles). Filip managed to get his first game but soon it was all over...pain in Ilija's right ankle was too big."

Why did he reacted like that? Would really like to know...

Well, qf is good result, and it was very good clay streak for him overall. He managed to broke inside top 300 and now is close to have ranking high enough to make regular appearances in challenger main draws.
Use this 10 days to get good rest Filip and to prepare for US hard court challenger swing.

Yeah, heard something that he may have been slightly injured :( . And he may skip those hard court challengers in US and play some clay ones again in South America, but that's still not sure. I really expected him to play those several US challengers and to maybe reach position for AO qualie draw with few solid results. Now I have no idea what his plans are. If he plays clay again and repeat results from Europe ones then it would be great. And playing more on clay than on hard court at the age he is in now, while he's still growing, is surely better for his long term health, for his knees etc. So if his team decided that it's Ok, no need to rush things. Playing on his favorite surface would get him more points now but in long term it's great from him to get experience on clay, he will need it in few years.

Radalek

Yeah, good effort...and he was up a break at start of the third set and then they played a long, long game when Filip was serving with a lot of BP saved and game points wasted and Lapentti broke back in the end. After that Lapentti was holding his serve rather comfortably and Filip had problems until he was finaly broken at *3-4. Lapentti served it out after.
I'm sad cos he lost but it was good match and great experience from him. He proved again that he can hold his own against very good claycourters. When he gets back to hard I expect some good results from him. But I have no idea is he getting back to US for hard court challengers or will he stay in South America some more.

Thanks for the report. Yeah, it's a shame, really he couldn't have had a much harder draw for that one. I can't see him on the list for any challengers coming up, which is a little strange because there seems to be very low rankings to enter many of them. I was hoping to see him in the qualifiers for AO, but he'll probably need at least 2good tournaments before then to have any chance of getting in.

Filip is #8 on alternate list for Ecuador challenger 2 weeks from now. Still haven't been able to find out is he on the list for Columbia challenger next week, it would be logical if he is. After Ecuador challenger there are 2 challengers in Mexico and since his coach is Mexican he'll most probably head there.
So it seems he decided to play on clay till the end of the year and I guess it's ok. He has 4 challengers till the end of the year to try to defend 60 points from Knoxville (Nov. 17, semifinal + qualifying points). I hope he manages to do a bit more and maybe he makes it into AO qualifying, that would be great. This year cutoff was at 328...so only defending most of those 60 points should do it but I would like him to get more just to be safe :) .

He won't go to Mexico after Ecuador challenger but will go to Lima, Peru. He'll be in main draw there for sure, a bit weaker field. So he most probably had chose to play Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru challengers...exotic travel it is ;).

I definitly like the schedule he has from August onwards. :)

It seemed strange at first to see him on clay that much since hard is is his favorite surface. But after good results on clay this schedule seems perfect now from many angles. He managed to get lots of points along with experience of playing a lot of clay matches which will benefit him in year or 2 and later. Also I already said that playing on artifical, hard surfaces while growing might be a problem for knees when you're a bit older after playing a lot of tennis so it's good for him to spend more time on clay being 17. He'll have to spend more time on hard in the beginning of the next season so ending this one on clay seems ok if we consider it all :).
Anyway, he's #14 on alternate list for Colombia challenger next week so let's see if he's going to play qualifications and I think he should since he played only one match in past 4 weeks.

He lost 6-7(6) 5-7...Salamanca won over 70% of points on both his first and second serve. Also Filip served for the first set at *5-4 and got broken...He now played only 2 matches in almost a month and lost both tightly. I doubt that he'll get wild card for Ecuador challenger next week so I think he should play qualifications, he needs some matches now. Some easier opponents in qualy draw would help him to get into rhythm again and to get some confidence back...

True, same thinking here and I think it would benefit him to play a bit more now. Do you think he would get better results if he decided to play US hard court challengers after he came back from Europe? I think he would but playing on clay now will benefit him in the long run. His team decided that he should continue playing on clay till the end of the season, few more tournaments. And now after he lost 2 first round matches he can skip Ecuador cos he doesn't want to play qualifications and add two more weeks before he plays again in Peru. That would be month and a half with only 2 matches played. So I hope he plays qualies in Ecuador. If he doesn't get some WC out of nowhere ;).

He's on the entry list for Puebla challenger in Mexico after Peru one, so he decided to end season on the hard court after all. Ecuador is next week, but he's not in the main draw for now. In Peru and Mexico he will be in the main draw so it's 2 or 3 tournaments left till the end of the year. He'll lose 60 points in 2 weeks so I hope he gets some results and stays in top 300. After that he has only QF points from Bucamangra challenger in January to defend till the end of the June, big room for gaining some points.

Yeah, it's Nico's brother. Second round should be also be somewhat easy, 2 wild cards are his possible opponents, one is 18 and ranked outside of top 1000 and other guy is just 16 and has no rank. It's Australia and a lot of players that can't make it into main draw don't even come there to play qualifications, especially clay courters. So this year lowest ranked player in qualifications was #328, so yes he really has a chance.
But he has to win some matches in next two tournaments to do it.
