Well done Fabrice. He kept his head (which Andy did not) and played some really good tennis to win this match.

Yeah Andy was completely robbed on that service line call, probably the worst mistake I've seen all year, but he should have put it out of his head and focused better.

So much appearence money for this ball slamming and overrated clown roddick for coming here.
Roddick gets a lot of $$$$$$$ for first round loss. So basically not much oif loss for him.

Fabrice shows to the world once again why he is a legend.

I didn't give his magic much of a chance today but I'm thrilled he took care of the boring Roddick.

Allez Fabrice, your first win over Andy :bigclap: Andy paid a price for having six weeks off. No matter. On to the next tournament.

And go Red Sox! :rocker2:

Will you ever get ironic sentences?

Santoro was always known for being a talented player, but with no power.

Roddick is known for being a ball basher.

So, overpowers... :p

Roddick has to get back to the states for another exhibition. Rumor has it thats its a huge one. The mother of all exhibitions, Andy wouldnt miss it for the world.

Wouldn't say Roddick was overpowered. Hell no! Fabrice was just a little too good and Andy was a little ring rusty.
Here's a match report hot off the press for those who didn't see the match.

I kind of felt that Fabrice would win. He's just a very clever, smart player and Andy was injured and rusty.

Good for Fabrice. Fabrice can trouble all the players. He just has that ability. All the players know this. Well they should know this.

Chris Seahorse
10-24-2007, 09:25 PM
Fabrice is amazing. What can one say?

A couple of points however. Roddick rarely loses in the 1st round. Infact, aside from Roland Garros, where he is hopeless of course, this is Roddick's first 1st round loss in over 2 years, which I think makes Fabrices victory today even more impressive.

One very cool stat. With this victory Fabrice has now defeated 16 out of the last 17 world number ones at sometime in his career, going back all the way to Mats Wilander who became number one in 1988. The only number one he didn't defeat since 1988 is Yevgeny Kafelnikov who was always a thorn in Fabrice's side. Oh I should add his victory over Ferrero came as a result of Ferrero retiring.

The complete list.

Mats Wilander 1-0 :D
Stefan Edberg 1-3
Boris Becker 1-1
Jim Courier 1-0 :D
Pete Sampras 3-4 :yeah:
Andre Agassi 3-3 :smoke:
Thomas Muster 4-3 :worship:
Marcelo Ríos 1-3
Carlos Moyà 3-1
Yevgeny Kafelnikov 0-6 :awww:
Patrick Rafter 1-1 :)
Marat Safin 7-3
Gustavo Kuerten 1-1 :)
Lleyton Hewitt 2-2 :p
Juan Carlos Ferrero 1-4
Andy Roddick 1-2
Roger Federer 2-8

That is a total of 33-45 against the last 18 world number ones. If not for Kafelnikov and Federer it would actually be a .500 record. Pretty impressive I would say. :rocker:

Regarding his spat with Umpire Graf, Roddick was unrepentant.

"It's pretty simple, I've been known to argue even when I'm not right, I'm very conscious of that. Players can have bad days and umpires can have bad days too. To be fair I don't know if he had the best one on break point either. I don't think it was anything personal either way."

Actually I'd have thought indoors was Santoro's best surface to play Roddick - gives his serve a bit more bite than outdoor conditions would, plus the slice and dice play would probably be toughest for Roddick to handle on these low-bouncing courts. And of course it only came down to one double fault in the tiebreak and one service break for Santoro over the three sets.

Because I'm a relatively new tennis fan, Fabrice wasn't on my radar until he kept me up very late one night last August stretching James Blake to five sets in their second round U.S. Open match. This was the most entertaining match I'd ever seen.

I wish I'd seen this match today. I'd have loved to see Roddick getting the Santoro treatment. I laughed when I saw the result.

Allez, Fabice!

I loved the roddick show after one point.
He thought his second serve was out so he lost his focus and his forehand went out....
He was like "No.... !! My forehand is not out !! I made a double fault first you stupid umpire..."
At the same time he realised he had choice between losing the point and losing the point... :silly:
