Expected result, but unexpected strong performance by Stan "the swiss man who beats Nalbi" the man :hatoff:

Wawrinka was excellent today and well done to him. He thoroughly deserved to beat David in straight sets. That return backhand winner down the line at 5-5 in the tiebreak was awesome, and so was his general performance from that moment onwards. His serving was faultless throughout.
It isn't a surprise that David lost today, considering Stan the man had won their 3 previous encounters (including at Vienna a couple of weeks ago and during their quarter-final at Basel in 2006), and David did play 6 matches (with some huge scares in the opening 2 rounds) at Madrid last week.

Great performance from Stan :yeah: Well deserved victory.

David had a SP in the first set, but couldn't take it. Stan has now won 4 times in a row against David.

Good luck for the rest of the tournament :)

Bandy fell apart in the second

He didn't actually fall apart... it's just that Wawa played one of his   matches as he does occasionally - he was painting lines consistently with great pace and very little mistakes off of BOTH wings. You can't do much against that, but noone can do it ALL the time, day in, day out.

And, sorry to say, but your title gets it all wrong - he didn't show Roger HOW to do it, because Roger will never beat David THAT way. Wawrinka has that amazing 1H backhand that is rock-solid if he is in form, it's the shot that can't be broken down by constant pummelling, like Fed's can be (utilized by both Nadal and Nalbandian).

Hats of to Stan the man, David doesn't have much to regret, it's not that he choked the match away. Stan just couldn't miss a deep shot and was serving like a monster.

Did anyone notice how Wawrinka stands further back when receiving 2nd serves, than when receiving 1st ones? It actually makes sense for his playing style, amazingly enough.

The difference between fed and waw is that waws drive backhand is actually pretty good and helps him stay in the rallies, and also hit great DTL shots.

Understatement. In Stuttgart final against Nadal he fearlessly engaged in his BH to Nadal's FH baseline exchanges, which to me seemed like a suicide but he proved to be more than able to keep up with him. How about that? His BH is just great, and somehow reminds me of Kohlschreiber's 1H BH. They can both hit them very strong with a lot of topspin and a great pace. Similarly, they are both capable of playing some really powerful and great-looking tennis one day, and then give a total crapfest the next day. Too bad.

Yes Yes he is a good backhand, quoting my statement to prove a point isn't going to make his backhand become godlike. His problem is shot selection, once he masters that, he should be quite a handful.

Great win for the swiss. I know that Wawrinka is a tough oponente for David, but they played two times in a GS and both wins went to Nalbandian. And the wins for Wawrinka came from all IS, except for Cincinati. Some weird stuff, right?

Kuhne
10-24-2007, 07:17 PM
I think this is one of the main reasons why Federer will be #1 for a long, long time... Fed lost to Djokovic in an ATP masters final then the next tourney in cincinati Djokovic gets beat, yet Federer makes the final and takes it, same thing here, Nalbandian beats Roger and then in the next tourney this happens, and I am pretty sure roger will still make the final, who knows if he is gona win it with the way he is playing.

I would actualy love it if Wawrinka won this tournament, it would be AWESOME.

"It was a win for Roger and for me," Wawrinka told reporters. "I spoke to Roger after the Basel draw was made and he told me to win this one."

"I always enjoy playing him, even in the first two matches that I lost, but beating him today at home was unbelievable," said Wawrinka.

"It was a great match for me and I was very happy with how I served. I'm sure Roger will be just as happy with the way I played as with the result itself."

I'm not saying Nalbandian can't beat them and not a better player though, he certainly can but I'm just saying they are bad matchups for him. Blake, Wawrinka are all good examples.

Yes, Nalbandian surely didn't try as hard in the second set as he did in that long first set - where he actually wasn't able to return a total of (correct me if I'm wrong) 22 Serves...so it seems quite understandable to me, that he resigned a bit on the return side. Congrats and now beat Berdych!

Whenever I read Stan's interviews, he ALWAYS mentions Fed.

I noticed that too, and he should be very concerned about it.

I think it is called Edip's complex and demands urgent treatment.Call it venom, but I am worried about him ("Do not bow down to any idol or worship it, because I am the LORD your God "...)...

He has one of the best backhands in the game, but his movement and as you said shot selection are his big problems, plus he is inconsistent on serve.

Yup, overall he's so inconsistent. When he's on though, he's capable of just overpowering the opposition from both wings. Guess if you weren't very fond of him you could call him a 'mindless ball basher'. He certainly doesn't mind blasting the ball all day long.

Did you notice his habit of receiving 2nd serves even further behind the baseline than 1st? Obviously he has enough power on the backhand side that he prefers having enough time to react and having the ball on the fall, not on the rise. On 1st serve that wouldn't be an option, but most 2nd serves come just to the height where he likes them, some 3-4 meters behind the baseline. And then he just cracks them no matter which side they are. So much power, even if it doesn't put as much pressure on the server himself, as quicker returns from inside the field generally do, if they are good enough.

He has improved his serve and forehand, he lacks a bit of variety, but that is common with loads of players these days. He could think better on court, but he has improved over the last 2 seasons.

He is a shotmaker and can play on all surfaces except grass and as for his 2nd serve return pattern, well it makes him feel comfortable and it works for him. As long as he makes that return count, then move closer to the baseline in the rallies, then that is fine.

Fortunately for Nalbandian he has plenty of time to rest ahead of Paris and has no points to defend there.

So he could end the year ranked #15 or #16 with a good run in Paris (good draw permitting).

He will lose the points from last year's TMC. So he'll be lucky to end the year in the top 20.

Never so vulnerable to break, as when just after you've broken. David won a biggie, jumped up what?...fifteen spaces. Slipped a bit, mentally, perhaps.

Criminy.

Nalbandian didn't play that bad. It was Wawrinka playing out of his mind.
