I want Gaudio. I watched him play today, and he has such a nice game, and he is so talented. Too bad he always chokes. It is also nice that it's not always the "big guys" winning grand slams.

Henman! But Gaudio deserves it for his style and Nalbandian for his technique, so basically any of these 3 although I prefer Tim right now.

And yet you didn't vote for him ;)

I voted for Gaudío too.. A bit of a sympathy vote, because I think he is a great guy and a talented player.. If it weren't for all the choking! In many ways this year's Roland Garros is a big success, as I wouldn't mind Gaudío, Nalbandían or Henman winning. But Coría will probably win and I don't want that to happen!

It's amazing how many people (even Argentines), likes only one of David and Guille and even get to dislike a lot the other...

...it's so fun and relaxing cheering for the two of them...

Gaston was a notch below in my rootings because of the big chunk of life he has taken out of me during his multiple and heartbreaking "pain experiences" (calling them chokes is an understatement), but his interview after the amtch today showed such a humble and likeable guy , he has come back all the way (as long as he stays out of DC singles), and I wouldn't mind a bit if he wins...

Maybe because he's the only Anglophile left  I know that the British contingent on this board is growing--but where is every else? Argentine hate that great

My patriotic allegiance goes for Henman. Should he lose, I want to see Gaudio hold the trophy aloft; after all, he's not got a chance at any other of the grand slams -we all know Nalbandian does and as for Coria, him winning RG would be just too predictable.

Coria all the way baby! I love Nalby and Gaudio and all the other argentines --we've made history and Im COMPLETELY ECSTATIC about it!! :D But Coria by virtue of the fact that he's the best of the ones remaining (by far) deserves the RG cup. It would be hard to argue otherwise. Either way, Argentina really made out this tournament and its making a lot of ppl in my country very, very happy. And that of course makes me happy.

Yeah true! :) But the other 3 are baseliners and mostly hit the ball from right to left and throw in some nice angles and drop shots. They hardly ever smash, they never need to use the lob (Coria will against Henman but otherwise he wouldn't use it except to moonball) because they very very rarely come to the net and therefore they don't volley. Therefore they don't even use half the shots in the book.

Chloe le Bopper
06-03-2004, 02:43 PM
Coria has a very good lob, and he has absolutely ever shot in the book when he plays somebody that actually... makes him play.

But I suppose it's just easier to dump three players with different gamestyles into the same group as a weak attempt of talking Henman up. Henman's game is interesting enough that it's not necessary to do diminish the skills of other players in order to discuss it... but whatever. I'm tired, crabby, and at work ;)

Horatio Caine
06-03-2004, 02:46 PM
I am not diminishing the skills of the other 3 players - they are obviously very good players!! I am just saying that their games are less interesting than Henman's and these days, less interesting games are winning...which is sad. It will be bad when all the serving and volleying dies out.

It's ridiculous to say he's hated simply because he's so good. Sampras and Agassi weren't hated when they were much better than Coria now. Seems like the reasons are different: first his style of play. People want to see attractive tennis as great shots and such but not fast legs and good defence. Of course Coria hits big shots once in a while but generally he builds his game on the weaknesses of his opponents, getting them to make mistakes and how to tactically hurt them and that's not very pretty.

Second would be his personality. He seems annoying: the way he's so arrogant and confident in himself, often letting the umpire check calls that were undisputable, he can't be called a 'nice person'. Sometimes he says something really arrogant and weird to his opponent after losing to him. Also he's so angry and ruthless all the time on the court which is his winning formula but earned him the evil midget nickname.

Coria doesnt have the body size nor sizeable strength to build his game around constant great shots like Safin. And even making those supposedly few great shots and his running take a big toll on his body as his many injuries attest to. So to accuse him and others of building their game on others weakness's as "not pretty" just isn't fair. These players develop whats best for them, their bodies, training, natural talents/preferences, etc sooo I don't think your argument of his game being the main reason ppl don't like him is a very good one at all. You may not like him for his style... and thats fair... but you can hardly hold it against him. In fact, Agassi's game was the kind that always inspired him but he's hardly like Agassi for x, y, z reasons. And you've got to respect that. Not everyone is really built for Agassi's game except Agassi. Coria found a style to suit his talents and youre essentially blaming him for that. That can have nothing to do really with being pretty or not. These players play to WIN, not to necessarily play "pretty". Everything else, from the perspective of a fan, is just taste and preference. And you're no one to speak for most people's preferences.

For these people who don't like him I suppose his style is a big reason. It's not his fault that he's not physically able to play a very attractive game but most people will just like the one who can more. Coria might be happy with his style but many people are not. Of course I can't speak of most people's preferences but considering Peoples' preferences I tried to guess the reasons of many people disliking Coria based on the guy's post who pointed it out.

Funny how the US press is describing this a the Brit, Tim Henman, and 3 Argentines. Of course they have no names, like combining the Williams sisters

Just look on the ESPN site, a pic of Tim, along with his name, and oh! the 3 Argentines.

Like the US press or ESPN have a clue about what's going on.

When asked who's the one to beat this weekend, he answered "Smarty Jones".

Gaudio or Nalbandian, the other two I don't care about or want to see them holding the trophy, though Coria will in the future.
