Nalby in Madrid: Best performance by any player this year?

Nalby rocked the #2, #3 and #1 in a row. Impressive also his results.

6-1 6-2 over R. Nadal
6-4 7-6, straight sets win over N. Djokovic
1-6 6-3 6-3 over R. Federer in a masters final when he was down a set

Nalby at his best is the 2nd best player in the world imo.

Best performance by any player this year me thinks.

Amazing, considering how the rest of his year has gone.

Yeah, I think so. I think his recovery from 4-6 0-4* down against Birdshit contributes to make it the most amazing tournament for any player this year.

No, the best performance was Federer at the AO.
But this one defenitely a good second.

yea eventhogh djokovic did the same these 3 wins are sweeter. I wasnt expecting Nalby to win this until until i saw his performence against Djoko. It was more unexpected than Djokovic beating Roddick

It's not a major. People were saying that about Novak this summer.
It's a whole different game if Federer is preparing for the tournament.

What Nadal does in Paris is much more impressive. No one else is beating Federer at a major.

Yeah, this week performance by Nalby was amazing. Altough, Rafa, Fed and Djoko were not at their best this week. It is possible that high amount of matches by those players is taking its toll while season is coming closer to the end. Nalby played only half amount of that, so it is possible he is very fresh at this point of season :)
I hope David will keep this form next season, so that we have more serious contenders for all titles. Together with healthy Ancic (I think he can make breakthrough next year) they will make season much more interesting.

Way to go Nalbandian! :worship:

Beating federer indoors is a huge challenge.

This is more impressive than joker's win in canada.

although joker's win over nadal in canada was better than bandy's here in madrid.

Nadal is the better player on this surface. It was also an expected win and far from a surprise unlike Nalby's win this week.

Yes :yeah:

R.Federer

It is exceedingly impressive. I still go with the tardish Federer's win in Australia, without dropping a set.

Now if you ask about most UNEXPECTED best performance, this one takes it.

How do you mean they were not at their best? When they won their matches prior to running into Nalbandian, they were all playing their best. Suddenly they suffer a loss and it's because they are not playing well
Give some credit where it's due. They couldn't play their best -- all of them, Federere, Djokovic and Nadal -- because of what David was doing on the opposite side of the net.

Nalbandian never has been and never will be the no.2 player in the world.
The way ppl overeact on this board.

Most players have had stunning performances in their career where they've displayed their full potential but if its not done on a regular basis then its hardly worth having.

It is by the mere fact that Nalbandian has not shown any form at all this year, now out of nowhere he knocks over 1, 2 & 3 and that was after he comes back from the dead against Berdych.

We all know he has the game to do it but very rarely does he mentality put it together for a full tournament and that to me was the most impressive aspect of his week.

4. Djokovic @ Montreal
5. Gonzalez @ AO
6. RAFA @ Wimby
7. FED @ Wimby

Not major!!?? Let me tell u that it was only until today that i thought nalbandian had a chance to wint this tournament! Djokovic was ON THE RISE when he won Montreal. Nalbandian had no confidence at the begining of the tournament....

Federer at the AO, then this this, then Djoko in Canada.

I think this is the best performance...Nalbandian silenced everyone. Djokovic's win was great too, but as someone mentioned, him being Roddick (and to a lesser extent, Nadal) was not that surprising.

The best performance this year was Federer making all 4 slam finals again, and winning 3 out of 4 majors.

Duh.

Single tournament performance?

I might say Nadal at Wimbledon

First, read my whole post, do not take one sentence out of context, because you will see I gave credit to Nalby.
And when I said they were not at their best I meant their performances were not good even when they win their matches. For example, Djoko is playing pretty shitty last two weeks (except final in Vienna), it is painfull to watch him even if he is winning. And Nadal definitely was not top-form Nadal since US Open. And so on...

I am not trying to lower Nalbandian succes, because it is great achievement, and I adore his style of play, but people have tendency to hype players and results out of proportion (e.g. Djoko after Montreal) without thinking realisticaly. :wavey:

If we're talking about successive wins over three best ranked players in the world, David's performance is the best cause Djokovic was the real number 3 even before Montreal, so his win over Roddick was just a formality and brought him back his deserved rank.

If we are talking about best of the best performances of the year, then I have to agree with those who noticed that neither Nadal nor Djokovic haven't been at their best all their ways in Madrid, so the answer has to be something else-don't know-Federer or Nadal in their slam victories.

It's not surprising at all considering that the "grass" here is nearly as slow as clay.

It is for me, Federer at the AO (or Nole in Montreal, or Nadal in Montecarlo) played much closer to their expected performance than David here.

hahaha, he plays well over a three day period after showing how shitty his mental game and fitness can get all year, and all of a sudden his the 2nd best player in the world??

HAHA

Call me when Nalby sniffs another Slam Semi

Could be.

Good enough for changing my sig a little bit

If he played like that most of the time (not all the time!) he would be somewhere with Fed and Rafzilla in the rankings. Definetly in front of the Djoker.

Lets see if he can keep it up...Cant wait next season.

It was a huge performance, and I'm extremely happy about it, but I tend to take anything that happens after the USO with a grain of salt, even though Federer was certainly at his best this week.

"Never will be" is a standard over-reactive response. And your other statement is pretty ridiculous as well. Nalbandian has been in the top 20, often the top 10, for almost the entirety of last 4-5 years. He spent 47 weeks at #3/#4 in '06. I'd say that's a fairly regular basis. More regular than the current #3.

Anyway, best tournament performances I've seen this year:

1. Federer at AO
2. Nalbandian at Madrid
3. Federer at USO
4. Nadal at FO
5. Djokovic at Montreal

one of the est for sure...
His preformence in Madris was more impressive (in my opinion) than Djokovic in Montreal, but Federer in AO was awsome too
Damn... Who would believe he would win when he was set and 0-4 down against Berdych??? :worship:

outside of federer and nadal's performances, i think is the most impressive one.

beating federer indoors is a huge challenge and it was highly impressive nalbandian could do it. Especially with the way federer was playing this week. Scary stuff.

Why do you constantly reference this? Are you trying to be funny? If so, you are failing miserably.

As for th topic at hand, it had to be Fed at the AO, followed by Nadal at RG
