This is why Roger will never win RG. When his serve isn't working he is forced to win rallies. And he can't consistently win rallies against guys who have good command of both the forehand and the backhand.

Johnny Groove

FIT DAVE :bigclap:

He just played a very SMART match against Roger. He kept him on the run the whole time and didnt let Fed get the upper hand in the rallies. He also didnt get discouraged when Federer hit a great shot or came up with a big serve, and also threw in some service bombs of his own (where did they come from?!?!?!?)

He didnt try to overpower him, just kept the ball deep and hit some great angles, especially with that 2 hander, and especially off 2nd serves, he really owned Fed's 2nd serve.

Well done David :)

bandy took roger to school today.

Federer started off great playing the way he has the whole week.

bandy upped the ante in the second set. federer couldnt keep up with david from the baseliine . started slicing and then bandy always had the upper hand once federer started slicing.

Nalbandian must get huge respect from now on....

He has just defeated Nadal, Novak and the godfather on the spin....

The turning point for him was comming back from 4-6 0-4* against birdman...

Can't fault Nalbandian - he's pulled off a sensational week this week to take his first ever AMS title.

Too good from him today, he had all the answers at the end and he really rattled Federer and stayed calm to finish the job.

Congratulations to David - he couldn't ask for a better way to announce himself as a threat once again.

As for Federer - can someone check if his forehand went on ahead to Basel because it certainly went AWOL after the first set.

It needs a better thread title.

Fantastic performance by Nalbandian, he didn't shit himself after losing the 1st set. He knuckled down fought hard, starting serving better and hitting with better length.

Nalle took his chances and a very deserved victory and Martin Jaite once again works his magic. Corretja interviewing Nalbandian was great to see.

Congrats to Nalbi, what a week, how long this would last?
What a match, full of tehnology problems, turn overs, nerve's breaking, unbelievable.
After that problem with challenge, Nalbadian was pissed off, and when he lost first set with 6-1, I thought it's over. But, fat guy was determinated to break down the king, it was fantastic performance of him! And Federer become nervous making lot of mistakes. Really terrible organization with lot of bugs (including those models) on the court.

Dahveed is now the second guy to beat the Nos. 3, 2, and 1 seeds in succession to win a Masters this year. Nothing seems to inspire this guy much but for some reason he always plays really well around this time of year. I wonder if the memory of his godson has something to do with it?

Anyway, congrats to him and his loyal fans. :hatoff:

He was a set and 0:4 down in the 2nd round against Berdych. I think the last time a similar situation was in Memphis 2002 when the winner of that tournament, Andy Roddick was losing 5-7 0:4 in the 2nd round against Sa.

Fantastic week for Dave. Let's hope it wasn't a fluke and that he can keep it up. Comeback players often get that fantasy week and then slide back into dumpersville.

I hope this was a bit of a wake-up call for Roger, being outplayed from the baseline like that. I feel that his baseline game has deteriorated quite a bit this year and he's begun to rely far too much on his serve. Sure, beefing up his serve was a very good idea, but not if it means that his baseline game is getting lazy.

I'm a bit annoyed because I felt Federer lost the match mentally long before they called match point. He just got rattled and irritated and lost his clarity on what he was trying to do out there, starts trying to hit really hard and go for winners that aren't on, which is not what he does - it's a sign of how mentally unfocused he became.

Still, there we go - David puts a lot of pressure on your game when he's playing well and his backhand is on. And he's been serving so well this week that, in the past when you think you'll have a chance in his games, this time round from the second set on, he kept closing down any chances that Federer might have taken to come back into it.

All in all, a mighty performance from Nalbandian, you have to take your hat off to him. I don't much like it, but that's the way the shit went down.

Federer's drive backhand and forehand fall to pieces yet again when hes truly pressured...hmmm

This makes sense though.....how many times do you see Federer TRULY being pressured or outplayed?

It's very, very rare.

A player that loses a handful of matches a year can't REALLY develop the skill of withstanding the type of pressure that includes being outhit.

Not to change topic nor bring something irelevant to the conversation but, this is what Nadal does well that Federer lacks, when he is being out hit Nadal just keeps going, Federer, because he is so good, dosen't have answers to this problem.

Only a minor flaw in a near-perfect player.

Regardless, great stuff from Nalbandian who once and for all proves that he is one of the few who can beat Federer, no doubt about it.

He was a set and 0:4 down in the 2nd round against Berdych. I think the last time a similar situation was in Memphis 2002 when the winner of that tournament, Andy Roddick was losing 5-7 0:4 in the 2nd round against Sa.

Kiefer lost to Andreev in Moscow 2005 after leading 7-5 4-0 :p

the overreaction here is ridiculous. How many players can go toe-toe with federer from both sides for a long period of time?

Answer: Nalbandian

Federer's baseline game isn't in shambles.

Bandy served very well today. That was the key. Two years ago, federer would have broken back and this would have gone to a third set TB.

Amazing win for Nalbandian, he totally outplayed Federer from the baseline in those last two sets, you knew he was going to go all over his second serve, and it worked perfectly.

Congratulations, hope this is the start of something for him, after this awful year. Also congrats to his loyal fans, who have been with him yesterday, today and will be tomorrow.

Why should we be? If you look at the polls, quite a lot said though they wanted Fed to win, they wouldn't be surprised or dreadfully unhappy if Nabandian win. Nalby plays beautiful tennis -- what's not to like about that or appreciate. He beat Roger on a very good tennis game :) So sorry, we're a little disappointed, but not unhappy and certainly not suicidal - so you won't be getting rid of us anytime soon!

Strong stuff from David. Really strong stuff. Nerves (and wanting to do too much with the ball) did him in during that 1st set, where Federer was allowed to flow. But once he settled down, Nalbandian started to apply some pressure off the return. Federer felt it; David got the one break in that 2nd set, and magically, it was all he needed. For the last three matches David has shown us an aggressive 1st-serve-and-follow-up that he can count on to both win him free points and bail him out of tight situations. Not sure why he didn't develop this earlier in his career, but I hope his work and commitment to it holds through next season.

With the above, David was able to feel good going toe-to-toe off the ground with Federer on the issue of pace, depth, angles and variety. He's got the timing, feel and tactical mind to simply hang with Fedex. When Feds opened up with a strong shot, he was often right there to return it deep and hard. When Feds let up a little, David would get him on the defensive and keep him there till the point ended. By the end of the 2nd set, Feds was being outmaneuvered more than he liked, and by the beginning of the 3rd set, the Swiss was now the one a bit put-off, trying to do too much with both the forehand and backhand (instead off using the net more), and once again unable to break David when it counted.

Did Federer give up more errors than usual? Yes. But the forehand was looking good during that 1st set and much of the next. At the risk of being shouted out of MTF, I'll go ahead and call this the Hingis Factor: I don't think it's mere coincidence that the groundstrokes of the #2, #3 and #1 players were looking fine the previous match and then broke down against Nalbandian....

That was a great 2nd set from Nalbandian. Fed was playing well, but Nalbandian kept his composure and started working over the Fed BH and using his angles well. Took his once chance and then dominated the rallies the rest of the way. Amazing to think that this guy has done nothing the entire season, isn't it?

Though it's a little sad to see Federer lose, but it was a well deserved victory from Nalbandian, simply awesome tennis and outplayed Federer. Both players won the same amount of points, so Nalbandian played better obviously on the crucial moments. There were actually quite alot of similarities between Nalbandian's Madrid victory and Novak Djokovic's Montreal Victory. Djokovic defeated likes of Nalbandian then Roddick then Nadal then of course Federer within that tournament, in the final dropping one set to the swiss. David Nalbandian defeated Nadal then Djokovic then Federer, dropping one set to the Swiss. You can see the importance and strong build up of confidence going through such a tough draw.

Like I pointed out before, Roger is a great tennis player BUT he's not the best competitor out there. As soon as things get tight UE from him start piling up (eg. loss against Canas twice, Djokovic in Montreal, Nalbandian today and TMC). When he's up and when things are going for him he plays GREAT and not a lot of players can stop him, BUT when he's down, when he needs to fight, when he's not playing his best tennis, he's NOT the great Roger we all know. One exception to this that I can think of is his win against Nadal at Wimbledon this year.

Have to say this title was way more convincing than his TMC title. Only time will tell if this is the "new" Nalbandian or if it was just one of these exceptional weeks for him like Shanghai 2005.

Although i am a Federer fan, im really impressed with Nalby and what he's done this week. I've always liked him, and have always believed that when he has his head firmly out of his ass and is on song, that he capable of anything.
On the other hand, The Federer was not as sharp as he could have been and did not raise his level enough to beat David.
All in all, i can only take my hat off and say congrats to David and all you Nalby fans who have been having a really hard time for a really long time :D

i guess you only started following federer at the beginning of this year.

Federer has fought more than the joker, bandian and nadal combined. Thats why he has 12 slams and is sitting at the top for more than 3 years.

Bandwagoning evidently works both ways, with one result Nalbandian becomes a Golden Slam winner next year and Federer can't play under pressure at all. No really, he just won all those 51 titles by being overwhelmingly better than every opponent in every match, not by having to work for victory!

Funny that they've now played 15 times with an 8-7 edge to Federer but Nalbandian has won both their finals, and beaten Federer to win both his significant titles. If there was an indoor Grand Slam I don't think he'd be quite such an underachiever by now, this is where his game and his devastating returning has the biggest effect. Federer unbroken all week and Nalbandian just took the break at the start of the second with brilliant play, then the pattern of the rallies completely turned in his favour, and those improved serves on big points (e.g. two service winners when breakpoint down at 4-2 in the second) made all the difference. Federer couldn't get into Nalbandian's service games that easily, so when he did have chances he panicked a little and made some surprising errors.

Hewitt, Nadal, Djokovic are all better competitors than Roger if you ask me. They are NOT better tennis players of course, but are better competitors. There's a difference.

that's true. He starts panicking or something and goes on a huge down stream when the opponent is standing toe-to-toe with him. In the games he played he always have these HUGE POINT LOSING STREAKS. Another good example is the Shanghai match against Nalbandian, when he got broken in the third set he started going down and down and down playing like poo until 4-1 of the fifth set!! There are many such examples from Federer. He somewhat plays statistical tennis which is quite unique. He neutralizes everybodies weapons and is always able to come up with the upper hand or equal on the stat board to the opponent. I guess he has explained it to us before, use to he would play aggressive aggressive aggressive to try to beat the opponent but he realizes that such is not the way for him, now he is patient and wait for the moment for the opponent to break down (which is why he's so freaking good when he's winning). So if the opponent doesn't break down and continues to be in the zone, Federer can't play his usual tennis and is forced to fight.

i guess you only started following federer at the beginning of this year.

Federer has fought more than the joker, bandian and nadal combined. Thats why he has 12 slams and is sitting at the top for more than 3 years.

You are either too stupid or CAN'T READ. I never said that Roger isn't the best player in the world (and probably one of the best ever). Yes he won 12 slams and countless masters BUT most of those titles (especially slams) he won BY BEING BY FAR THE BETTER PLAYER. HE NEVER HAD TIGHT 5 SETTERS (exception is against Nadal in Wimbledon) nobody challenged him. He was BY FAR ABOVE THE REST. I simply said he's not the BEST COMPETITOR out there NOT that he's not the best tennis player, which he is. If you don't know the difference between the two than there's no point arguing.

and for your information I watched Federer lift his first and all subsequent slam and AMS titles.

You must be feeling great today, uh? :D Following a player through all the ups and downs has its rewards.

Yes, and seeing fans of Federer and Nadal struggling to handle defeat is always a good thing.

As for Jaite he has form for this in his coaching career and he wasn't the most talented player. He did a very good job with Gaudio and he can do the same with the rally loving country boy.

Pansaldian  he outplayed Federer, not excuses can be made this

time :), he served better in the last two sets, i mean he could get more

cheap points and weaker returns and his bh started to working really

well, his crosscourt fh too, he was putting Federer on the run a lot,

forcing him to make errors ,and returning very well .

I think you'll find he lost 10 games in a row in that match from 1-0 up in the fourth to 0-4 down in the fifth - that wasn't a mental collapse. Nalbandian losing three out of his next four service games to give Federer a chance to serve for the match certainly was, however.

One word - outplayed. It was amazing to watch David. I absolutely don't mind Fed losing to someone who played like that today.

That upgraded serve helped Dave out a lot.

I got news for you RFK, I'm feeling just fine. But YOU were quite suicidal after the Wimby loss and we at MTF were quite concerned for safety. Good to see that you realized suicide is not the way out of life's problems. ;)

you didnt even read my post.

i said he has fought more than any of those other players and in doing so won all those titles.

There are many bp's, setpts and tight moments in matches. No need for them to be only in the 5th set. Federer has had some nice victories in 5 sets btw so even if we adopt what you say, you are still wrong.

You are making conclusions from ONE match. Thats why i said you must not have been following tennis because clearly you haven't been paying attention. Federer has battled through more matches than anyone else on tour. Its not that federer suddenly plays good all the time.

He may not be the best competitor, but as Sjengster pointed out, you don't win as much as he has by simply being "on" every match. In fact I think it's easy to discount his fighting spirit because of his tennis skill.

of course he's a good competitor, he must be to win that many titles, BUT all I said was he's not THE BEST COMPETITOR OUT THERE. In a very tight match I'd ALWAYS put my money on Nadal.

The match I saw Dave outplayed Roger in the last 2 sets, he didnt do anything wrong. Its virtually impossible to defeat someone who plays like that. No shame in admitting that, why some people just dont accept that is beyond me.

I am off to party away whats left of Sunday.

From ATP offical site:

------------------------------------------
........................................
Djokovic defeated the world's top three players (No. 3 Roddick, No. 2 Nalbandian and No. 1 Federer) in consecutive matches to claim the Montreal Masters title earlier this year. Boris Becker was the only other player to achieve the feat (Stockholm, 1994).

:hatoff: David.
To defeat the top 3 seeds to win a masters is an amazing achievement. I didn't think he had still that in him. Hopefully for him, the confidence from this week will make him a contender again for the slams in 2008.
Even as a Fedtard, I'm not pissed, David is such an underachiever.

And to think Berdych was leading 6-4 4-0, the odds for him winning the tournament were long enough at that moment I think.

Good week for Argentina in sport.

Miami (Nadal was then...what, 11 at the time?? Just kidding but he was very young then lol) is one of a VERY FEW EXAMPLES and that is my point. Can you remember when was the last time Roger won tight 5 set match in Slams since he was no.1??? Or for that matter how many times did he play a 5 set match in slams? I can remember only when he lost to Safin (5 set match if i am not mistaken) and this year at Wimbledon.
