Definition of destruction. Ladies'n'Gentlemen, David Nalbandian is back on the track! And I mean the right on, not this one filled with go-karts. Awesome backhand, great tactics, steady serve and forehand, right footwork... all that's given him all four different GS semifinals

Nadal didn't have a good day and David didn't choke like Murray yesterday. I mean, Nadal deserved to win, but Andy was better for most of the encounter

Onto the Djoko show, david. Buenos dias!

Quite possibly the most embarrassing loss Nadal has suffered in his career.

I couldn't see the match, and I hear Nalbandian played very well, but I'm truly speechless at a) the score, and b) how few points Nadal won on Nalbandian's shit serve.

Time to take the rest of the year off Rafa.

I felt for Rafa today, this was either an injury or a REALLY bad day at the office, made me think of Roger vs. Volandri, he kept missing easy shots, couldn't hold his own in a rally, and none of his usual strenghes were working.

Ouch, in front of the home crowd, too.

Very suprising! Nadal clearly wasn't at his best, but let's give credit to Nalbandian. He becomes the third player ever to defeat both Federer and Nadal at their respective peaks.

That wasn't even close, unlike last year the crowd didn't even get a chance to get involved in the match.

Congrats to Nalby. He played a great match, not that he really needed to.

I would love to see a match between these two when they're both in good form. Because anyone who thinks Rafa was 100% for this match should be smacked upside their head. He had nothing left. And what little he did have left, Nalby took care of rather quickly. Nothing he could do. Absolutely nothing. Playing 3 really good players in a row after being off for almost 2 months recovering from injury...yeah, this is what you get.

He defended his points, which even I thought he'd have a hard time doing. That's all I hoped for, really.

Hopefully, now that he has played some matches, knocked off some of that rust, he will be better prepared for Paris. But he seriously needs to rest a little bit before then.

Nalbandián played unbelievable, moving Rafa left and right with great depth and angles. Rafa played awful, mishitting often off both wings and being unable to dominate the rallies. Of course, Nalbi playing great had something to do with Rafa playing horribly, and viceversa.

Firstly, once again Madrid proves to not be a very friendly crowd. It wouldn't have hurt them to clap for Nalbandian a bit more after he won:o

Nalbandian came out with a game plan which he executed very well coupled with Nadal making ridiculous errors, being outmaneuvered, and a forehand that was attacked and let him down at times.

I hope I won't be reading any injury excuses from the rafatards.

When considering the point's race, thank you Nalbandian and congrats:D

I watched it, what a crappy performance by Rafa. David was very good, but the greatest factor was the huge number of UEs from Nadal.

As others have said, few errors are truly unforced. Nalbi didn't leave any short and easy balls, he was hitting with awesome depth and putting Rafa under pressure all the time. That said, obviously Rafa mishit a lot and played well below his best. But whenever a player makes loads of ues, credit has to go to his opponent.

Dont compare Nalbandian to Volandri, Nalbandian is an amazing player when he is on. Nadal didnt know what to do, I mean he hit only 5 winners the whole match, he had no clue how to outplay Nalby and Nalby refused to make UEs. So Nadal got desperate and did desperate things in the 2nd set.

True and yet all the signs were there if we'd cared to read them - David playing much better this week, the serve more potent than it has been, Nadal having a very gruelling match last night.

It shouldn't really come as a major surprise and yet somehow it does.

Mainly because David has been so useless for so long, I suppose.

Today though, was like the payoff on a high interest account of tennis form, with Christmas Club bonus thrown in for good measure. I'd be hard pressed to think of the last time he took care of business on his side of the court so effectively.

Nadal, played nothing. But the last points... I mean, he is just great, to lose like that, the crowd has nothing to be ashamed of.

Nalbi, he played great, but I think he played one of the best matches of his life, and Rafa the contrary.

So, I wouldn't make so much noise of this, let's wait until Djokovic. If he plays this tennis... well, he has many chances.

Similar games as you said, Nalby is more explosive and can get those crazy BH angles on both sides. Taking away the consistency and mental part (which is obviously a huge component of being successful) and Nalbandian has more 'pure talent' if one can define that as anything.

Now why has it taken him until Madrid to produce anything like his best tennis? The match was utterly frustrating to watch, as even though it was brilliance from Dave, there is the question of why hasn't he done anything like this all year

Hopefully this will be the result he needs to turn around his career, which was going nowhere and now he can make his way back towards the top 10 and back to challenging in the big events

If he keeps up this level of play, and continues to serve as well as he has done this week (although still not liking the first serve percentage), he can trouble Djokovic, but still will be the massive underdog

David gave Rafa quite the thrashing.

And to think a lot of people said David has no weapons to hurt Nadal with.I thought the same, well, I mean, David is not the standard of player that Rafa would feel hurt by, it's not casualty that Blake and Berdych are Rafa's dads...
But David is very smart, that's the reason why his not so aggresive game was a lot to Rafa. Rafa played awful, it's not common for him to lose that many points from the baseline.

I've seen videos of Nalbandian practicing with Nadal before in Shanghai last year. Nalbandian was spanking the ball like crazy and he did just that in this match. Nalbandian is one of the few players whose backhand, like Safin, not afraid of Nadal's intense topspin. Nalbandian is superb playing against players who plays mostly defensive. To Nalbandian, playing Nadal was just like playing Coria. Awesome display of tennis from Dave, nice to see him back on track doing something again lol.

Rafa was pretty flat out there. Embarrassing win to error rate. But to give Nalby credit- he was steady as they go. He looked GREAT!

Well- that was the most craptacular that I may have ever seen Rafa play, makes his performace against Alun Jones look like stuff championships are made of in comparison. Painful stuff- and a day after such a good match by him. I do believe that Nalby had a lot to contribute to it- but Rafa was just off. That shanked overhead towards the end of the match had nothing to do with Nalby but had everything to do with Rafa's utter level of suck.

But complete and utter congrats to Nalby. Such a smart game plan and such great play. It was nice to see him have such a great performance- even if one of my other favorites was stiking up the joint. This was a beatdown, pure and simple. I hope he can keep this level up against Dr. Spock- a final here would really help to salvage a horrible year. But this is Nalby- Ruler Supreme in the Land of Brain Farts so I am expecting him to get five games at the most tomorrow. And Nole is just in the utter zone of confidence right now- so I don't see David winning tomorrow.

just check the h2h.. just check the junior activity.. who won the junior us open? against who?.. come on..you cannot deny nalbandian on his good days can put into trouble someone like federer

neither nadal, djoko or roger are playing his best this part of the year..

to be honest im not sure if nalbi will win tomorrow..he can easily lose 61 61 to djoko..because he is inconsistent..but if he finds his form he can be a match to anyone.. specially the way they re playing lately (djoko 76 vs chela..after saving 2 mp..for e.g...last week)

Dude, don't get ahead of yourself. Nadal is no Federer.
Federer for one can serve himself out of trouble. Second, believe it or not, Fed is a way better defender than Nadal against Nalby. Nadal's defense mechanism mostly consist of "I hit a high swirly forehand to your backhand, and I am back in the point, haha" which is ineffective against Nalby. He can hit his backhand high and low which is a nightmare for Nadal. Furthermore, Fed's strokes(forehand) are way more penetrating.

People always group Nalbandian and Safin together but unlike Safin (who is finished) Nalbandian still can be a top 5 player. He is easily better than Djokovic on all surfaces and Nadal on faster ones.
And unlike Safin, who has two Slams, Nalby has basically jack.

It was a very nice result today and a pleasure to watch David hitting with such precision, but let's not go overboard here. Rafa played poorly. David was reading his serve like a book. David was in rare form, hitting everything and landing it. Tomorrow will be another day.

This was a match that in principle was going to be hard for Nadal. Dave doesn't make UEs, hits very flat off both wings and works the angles. He also has the ability to punish weak serves. Nadal has trouble handling flat paced shots and has a relatively weak serve. Nadal's lefty topspin also doesn't bother Dave.

The question was, which Dave was going to show up. I guess the "I want to play tennis" Dave showed up today. Well done.

Not to be whatever, but do you all think that the death of David's godson could have had an impact on his attitude for part of this year? I mean, he has never had a great attitude in terms of focus, but I do wonder if the nature of the death Lautaro Nalbandian could have had an impact on him this year. I am not looking for an excuse or whatever- but I have wondered if something so jarring could have done a lot to unfocus a player who was prone to being unfocused. Of course his injuries have played a part too in his bad year as well as general bad play.

But you know, if you look close you'll see that his fans are not the ones who are getting too far ahead of themselves like you said. it's exactly the contrary actually.

this is a win, an important one for him of course. Nothing more, nothing less. :)

Well, I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but I think some Rafatards are in denial if we think he can hold on to his #2 spot for much longer.

Nole is playing EXTREMELY well and Nadal.........

I will still love and support Rafa but, as they say "it was fun while it lasted".

There is no saying what Nalbandian will bring, if/when he reaches the final and if he plays Federer there. Obviously everyone knows he has the game to match and beat Federer, but sometimes the head is elsewhere-- like on the dirt track car race or some futbol match. Depends on if he has other, better things to do.

Will it be the first match between Nalbandian and the serb? That will be a good one

Yeah, because Nalby fans are insane and always think he can win anything. Please, I see this win for what it is, a win. Nothing else. He played great today and he can lose tomorrow with sucky tennis. That is just how he is. I still love the guy however. When his game is on he can beat anyone, including Federer, but I don't think he will continue on to become the new number 1 because of one great match. Nalby fans are not delusional, we just see how good he can be.

i think he means montecarlo's sf (76(5) in the third), roland garros SF.. (set up..and then retired.. after a set and a half outplaying fed..)..

 you fedtards are amazing..you seem to forget about history.. but only remember what you want to care..

just check the h2h.. just check the junior activity.. who won the junior us open? against who?.. come on..you cannot deny nalbandian on his good days can put into trouble someone like federer

neither nadal, djoko or roger are playing his best this part of the year..

to be honest im not sure if nalbi will win tomorrow..he can easily lose 61 61 to djoko..because he is inconsistent..but if he finds his form he can be a match to anyone.. specially the way they re playing lately (djoko 76 vs chela..after saving 2 mp..for e.g...last week)No what's amazing is Nalbandian has one good match in a long while and now he's the 2nd most talented player on tour, can beat anybody, blah blah blah. Lets see him back this play up first.

I will not be surprised if Rafa does lose the number two ranking soon to Nole. That happens- rankings can be fluid.

true, i do find it a lot easier to root for people who are making comeback attempts, even if I didn't like 'em to begin with (Hingis on women's side, Ancic, JoJo, etc.)

As much as I have always loved Bandy in tennis terms, and as much as he really looked focused and motivated today once for a change, it was Nadal who lost it. And it's okay because losses happen. He wasn't totally up for it, I haven't seen his match yesterday against Murray, from what I've heard Murray was playing great and at the end couldn't deliver. So, probably Rafa should have been out already a round before.

Good that he got beaten by Nalbandian of course, who doesn't give a shit to top players when he decides to show up (and wow, what diet has he been on off late? Diet Coke, eh?).

Of course, same people who worshipped Bandy at Shanghai 2005, then called him a fat one who should retire, now adore him again. But this really didn't even need to be pointed out, lol.

He did - TMC 2005. Yeah but that was a while ago, Novak and Nadal are the ones that have beat him in the finals this year. If Novak could beat him again this year, especially in the TMC, he would be the Spartan King, maybe, I don't really know what makes the Spartan King though.

Nalgandian went straight to the point, as must be done against Nadal. No long rallies but an intelligent exit, ASAP. And a stubborn attack on his second serve. I just knew since the begining Nalbandian would be Nadal's nightmare! After a long wait the spectacle happened - but I didn't expect such a devastation... It's such a pitty they didn't play while Nadal was at the top of his fame, Nalby would also beat him on clay!

Nalbandian is probably the only slamless player who can compete with everyone... and apart from Federer the only one who can compete with everyone on every surface. And with that serve of his, that's something to brag about
