No idea, how Kiefer managed to save those 2 bps in the first set, but he had no chances to convert any of his own bps (3). Got a bit lucky in the first set thanks to Karlovic double faulting in the TB.

Can't say I'm too sorry - I don't want to see Karlovic with any shot of the TMC.

Maybe next year if he can do something at slams other than lose in the first 2 rounds, that might be more appropriate.

Well done Kiwi! what a great tournament for him, and a little sad for Ivo, he had a good chance to make semis.

Ivo was too passive when he had chances in the first set. I don't think he chipped and charged once in the set and he had good chances to on the break points. He was banking on Kiefer making an unforced error which wasn't the wisest strategy I've ever seen. The again he seemed to get burned every time he tried it later on in the match.

Surprising that Ivo lost these tie-breaks with such an experience ;) A question to those who seen the match : does Kiwi return to his good form or not?

Ivo must have remembered that this guy owns the only bagel over him on ATP level.

I don't think anyone's going to repeat the feat, though. Breaking him once is a feat already, let alone 3 times in a set

Ivo has lost 5th match this season 6-7 6-7 (previously against Haase, Roddick, Federer & Melzer).

Kiefer is a joy to watch. I am happy he won this match, somehow it would have been unfair had he not.

This is the reason Karlovic will never be top 15. He can lose 76 76 to 99 % of his opponents on any surface any given day.

Good usage of chances in the tiebreak Kiwi :) :woohoo:
but tomorrow against Gonzo :( He can blast him away on a good day and Karlovic at least is weaker in the return games and overall game which helps somewhat.

Got a bit lucky in the first set thanks to Karlovic double faulting in the TB.
Okay, Karlovic had this double fault at the beginning and it was reponsable for an important psychological lead of 4-1 or so which made it easier in the following. But Kiefer was up 6-2 and then placed a chip just out wide after comfortably getting to a dropshot of Karlovic. This was an opportunity he could have taken and then it would have been 7-2.

I don't think anyone's going to repeat the feat, though. Breaking him once is a feat already, let alone 3 times in a set
And I think he even took the tieberak in the next set to love in this match as well.

That is the down side. The up side is he can beat anyone 7-6, 7-6 as evidenced by several wins over Haas an Davydenko, and that can get him into the top 25. Another up side is that he's not losing to just anyone 7-6 7-6 anymore. He's been winning 2 out of every 3 matches and except for an occasional hick-up he's just been losing to top players. Kiefer is top 10 material when he's healthy (which he appears to be, he crushed Youzghny 1 & 3 yesterday). Similar losses to Roddick, Federer, Ferrer, and Berdych are understandable.

Great to see the comebacks of Kiwi and Ancic going strong lately and finally Ivo's damn luck ran out - good.

He's 50/50 vs. almost anyone basically  toss of a coin. Not good for betting

OTOH, if he improves just a little bit as to have more chances to break, than to lose his own serve due to a string of 2nd serves or whatever, he can become a real beast. Noone likes playing anyone who's basically a toss of a coin. But suppose he becomes a 60/40 'toss'. Now that'd be scary for the rest of the tour  .

It's not that I think he would reach top ten or anything, but I'm positive everyone will look at the draw and hope Ivo doesn't land near him. It's a very bad feeling when you basically don't depend solely on your own racquet, but also on HIS 1st serve percentage, on which you have no influence whatsoever. It generates extreme pressure to win every single of your own serves, esp. in tiebreaks - and that is not easy at all, because Ivo is not completely useless in rallies, too. With his extreme wingspan he can generate a lot of power on his FH, and if he goes for broke sooner or later he's going to hit a blazing winner. And then you literally can't do jack but hope he misses a 1st serve or two.
