Martina Hingis on Eursport is saying that Gaudio is clearly the better claycourter, but nevertheless she picks Hewitt to win over Gaudio in this match

players are on the court, match should start soon after warming up
I hope not many rain delays today

06-02-2004, 12:11 PM
Rocky Llegs got stage fright??? Playing Centre Court for 1st time this year~~ it's quite uncharacteristic the way he's handed over his service games so meekly to Gaudio; perhaps Hewitt should pray for a rain delay^ only way he can turn around miserable form today>_<.

Actually Hewitt had 2-break point chances; one of which he took->> in 6th game Lleyton had a good chance to break back for 3-3 but blew it  . Since then it's all been Gaudio :worship: ^ what a shame Hewitt looks uninspired today  .

Well we know Lleyton never gives up and we know Gaston sometimes is not a great front runner and struggles to close out matches. This is the biggest match of his career, Lleyton's been here a few times before so he will not feel the same pressure so this is still up for grabs.

5-1 Gaston, looks like Rocky's gonna have to do it the hard way :)

Gaudio 6-3, 6-2

Gaston is playing very well, got to hand it to him. This is still new to him though in a GS QF and Lleyton has to keep that in mind and never give up. Lleyton has got to make a good start here in set 3. Come on Lleyton :)

He saved 3 break points. If he was not trying he would have given it up on the first. Give Gaudio some credit, he is playing well.

Lleyton's got to go for broke now. Flatten the forehand out and go for it.

He slipped during a rally and cut his knee. He carried on in that game afterwards so he was OK, he is not hobbling or anything.

3-2 Gaudio, Lleyton is fighting at least :)

That was vomit from Hewitt-->> actually he played better in the 3rd set~ 5/6 games which Gaudio won went to Deuce & the two games Lleyton got easily. If some of those Deuces had gone Lleyton's way then he would have a good shot atleast taking it to a 4th set!!
Alas Gaston was in peak form Hewitt played crappy & his fate was sealed>_<.

But what has ESPN done????? They're showing the damn Capriati QF from yesterday!!!!!! :fiery: :fiery: That match was far from a classic.

So, I guess I'll be watching David on the scoreboard anyway  . And taped after he wins ;) .

I can't wait to see Gaston's reaction when he wins. If he was that emotional getting into the QFs I can only imagine how he must have exploded winning match point. I'm so proud of him!!!

Second set:

Kuerten 2-6 4-1 Nalbandian
Kuerten is playing much better now and he pulls clear again with an easy service hold.

Kuerten 2-6 3-1 Nalbandian
Nalbandian stops the rot, but his service game is not without incident. And, interestingly, Guga is now winning most of the long points.

Kuerten 2-6 3-0 Nalbandian
This is a worrying spell for Nalbandian. Kuerten holds serve again, this time behind his forehand strokeplay.

Kuerten 2-6 2-0 Nalbandian
Kuerten sends the Parisian crowd into rhapsody by winning the longest rally of the match with a thrilling forehand pass. He then shanks a shot tamely at 0-30 but bounces back to break thanks to a rare Nalbandian error.

Kuerten 2-6 1-0 Nalbandian
The French crowd - which is pro three-times Roland Garros champion Guga - had gone quiet. But it warms to a couple of fighting rallies from the Brazilian, who eventually holds serve.

First set:

Kuerten 2-6 Nalbandian
Very few shots are coming off the middle of Kuerten's racquet and Nalbandian races into another game lead before winning the set with an ace.

Kuerten 2-5 Nalbandian
Kuerten misfires with two forehands and is beginning to look dejected. Another break puts him on the brink of losing the first set.

Kuerten 2-4 Nalbandian
Nalbandian makes two rare unforced errors to allow Kuerten back into the game at 30-30, and the 28th seed produces a beautiful drop shot to engineer a break point. But he makes two errors of his own to let Nalbandian off the hook.

Kuerten 2-3 Nalbandian
Nalbandian produces a sizzling backhand down the line to put Kuerten under pressure and the Argentine earns two break points. Kuerten holds firm until Nalbandian engineers a fourth opportunity and the Brazilian nets a tricky volley.

Kuerten 2-2 Nalbandian
Nalbandian responds by holding to 15 as the match settles into a rhythm.

Kuerten 2-1 Nalbandian
Guga is the first man to hold serve, although not without a struggle.

Kuerten 1-1 Nalbandian
Kuerten gets his backhand flowing and forges two break points. He fires a forehand long on the first but then produces an acute angle on the return to hit back immediately.

Kuerten 0-1 Nalbandian
Kuerten is given a rousing welcome by the crowd on Chatrier Court, but the Brazilian is immediately in trouble in the first game. Nalbandian hammers a backhand crosscourt to break straight away.

Gaudio too good for Hewitt
Unseeded Argentine Gaston Gaudio thrashed Lleyton Hewitt 6-3 6-2 6-2 to reach the French Open semi-finals.
Gaudio taught his seeded opponent a lesson in claycourt tennis, using acute angles to send the Australian scurrying all over Chatrier Court.

Hewitt crucially lost serve at 3-4 in the first set, having been 40-0 up, and the 12th seed could find no way back.

Gaudio, in his first major quarter-final, never lost his grip on the match and earned five more service breaks.

"He was too good," admitted Hewitt. "I didn't feel like I was hitting the ball as cleanly as I'd been hitting over the past week or so.

"A guy like that is confident on this surface and his movement is good. He's a class player on this surface."

Gaudio awaits the winner of Wednesday's second quarter-final between fellow Argentine David Nalbandian and Brazil's Gustavo Kuerten.

Nalbandian could make it three Argentines in the semi-finals, after Guillermo Coria's win over Carlos Moya on Tuesday.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 0-0 Nalbandian

Second set:

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 Nalbandian
Nalbandian chases down a cheeky drop shot and answers with a perfect lob to win the first point. But an ace levels things up and a couple of classic backhands down the line help Kuerten wrap up the set.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 Nalbandian
A fourth ace for Nalbandian and an unforced error from Kuerten add up to a service hold for the Argentine.

Kuerten 2-6 5-2 Nalbandian
Guga is just a game away from levelling the set count. Worryingly though, he gets some attention from a physio at the change.

Kuerten 2-6 4-2 Nalbandian
Nalbandian's double fault only delays a straight-forward hold for the Argentine, who is starting to battle back.

Fourth set:

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 4-6 2-1 Nalbandian
Nalbandian gets back on track with a love service game.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 4-6 2-0 Nalbandian
Having taken control of the match by taking the third set, Nalbandian is failing to press home his advantage. Kuerten is doing all the attacking and he consolidates the break.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 4-6 1-0 Nalbandian
After the tumble, Kuerten has treatment on his hip but is able to continue. Mindful of the injury, the Brazilian is now trying to finish the points off quickly and he is rewarded with a break point. He cleans the line with a screaming forehand to go a break up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third set:

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 4-6 Nalbandian
A moment of controversy at 30-30 when the umpire is called out of his chair to rule on a Guga forehand. It is ruled out and this presents Nalbandian with a set point, which he converts after Kuerten takes a tumble.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 4-5 Nalbandian
A forehand pass and a sublime drop shot claw Kuerten back into the game, but he then misfires from the back of the court as Nalbandian maintains his slender lead.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 4-4 Nalbandian
Kuerten works Nalbandian around the court with typical guile to reach 40-15, before Nalbandian pounces on a couple of second serves to force deuce. The Brazilian finds an ace, however, to level the set.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 3-4 Nalbandian
The see-saw nature of this match continues. After his hot streak, Nalbandian cools off with a couple of errors. Kuerten benefits after a mishit overhead catches his opponent out and breaks with a sizzling forehand on the subsequent point.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 2-4 Nalbandian
Good heart and some big shots win Kuerten an impressive service game, but he still trails in the set.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 1-4 Nalbandian
Guga sets Nalbandian up at 30-30, but the Argentine responds with a magnificent pass and goes on to hold.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 1-3 Nalbandian
To the disappointment of the crowd, momentum is back with Nalbandian now. Kuerten concedes break points after a long rally that he had chances to win and then drifts a backhand wide.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 1-2 Nalbandian
Nalbandian holds and this will give him confidence after a set-and-a-half of patchy tennis.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 1-1 Nalbandian
Kuerten falls to 0-40 and limply surrenders his service by netting from the back of the court. This match could easily go the distance.

Kuerten 2-6 6-3 1-0 Nalbandian
More pressure on the Nalbandian serve draws a double fault on break point from the Argentine. He is showing signs of nerves.
