look at the stats of the first set, Gasquet wasted great chances to win it, 17 return points won and Mathieu just 9 and four bp wasted to 0 for Mathieu :o , and Gasquet had any set point?

I concurr unfortunately. Unable to convert break points in the first set, playing them all 40000 yards behind the baseline. It's like he will never learn.

Gasquet played so negatively when things got tight there. On a court of this type he who dares usually wins and I must say I prefer that to be the case. Good win for Mathieu and he played a good match overall.

I'm so pissed at Gasquet:mad:

Congrats to Mathieu. When he broke Gasquet in the 2nd set, I switched to Djokovic's match. Ridiculous from Gasquet. But, there were many nice points played in the match.

This BYE for top players seems to be doing more harm than good.

Well, if he doesn't learn, he doesn't deserve better results. :)

Damn fucking thing this is,
That's what mugs do when it's really crucial.
Berdych choking million times and Gasquet playing defensively at his 1000% percent.

I'm not surprised by this loss.
That's what happens when he faces a decent opponent(choking Berdych can't be rated as a decent opponent at the moment).
As long as he won't understand that he'll go nowhere with this forehand and this way of playing 1000 miles behind the baseline on big points, those losses will continue.

I really didn't expect Paulo to win this one. Congrats Paulo. To my surprise, he was not tired from yesterday and was agressive. Richard played too passive, as usual. He might have felt the pressure of Shangai too.

I am sad Richard won't go to Shangai.. But I prefer him to lose against Paulo than anyone else. Bravo Paulo. I hope he will reach his goal to enter the top 15.

Do you ever think before you type? This is the most inappropriate comment I have ever seen?

I am sad Richard won't go to Shangai.. .
Which would make Richard play better immediately. :p

But it is not true: with Blake, Berdych, Haas, Moya also out, the fight goes on.

Why everybody saying Gasquet sucks? Mathieu is top 20 player with this win....
Because he's the higher ranked player?
Because he had a 3-0 record against PHM?
Because he had many chances to break his opponent and rarely took advantage?
Because he had a good opportunity to win the first tiebreak but didn't?
Because he played very passively?
Because he was facing someone prone to cracking mentally yet didn't pressure him enough?
Because he should have been motivated to not only win this match but improve his chances to qualify for the TMC?
Just a few guesses from earlier comments, following the match through the scoreboard and watching the last couple of games along with hearing the commentators' views of the match... BTW I'm actually happy for Mathieu and feel he earned this victory by being the more aggressive player but am disappointed that Gasquet didn't play as well as he is capable of.

Is Gasquet mathematically out of Shanghai?
Is quite frustrating and sad that because Gasquet is the most hyped and talked about of all the youngsters and beating Federer in 2005 and Federer calling him his favorite player to watch, he seems to be held to a different standard than most other young players so when he loses, the criticism is even harsher than usual. I know he didn't ask for us to hype him up so much but so far, he doesn't seem to take tennis seriously enough and I still don't see any improvements or changes like playing closer to the baseline, reform the forehand and adopt a more aggressive style of play. If his current coach isn't having any success with these changes then he should quit coaching Gasquet and maybe the next one will have the magic to turn him into the player he should be with all his talents on the court. I know that PHM is a good player but Gasquet is ranked quite higher and has a 3-0 record vs him and winning in India and reaching the final in Japan should have given him some confidence...you would think. This loss is indeed hard to swallow.

Paulo :hatoff: Too bad for Richard that he could not close out the 1st set, he has only himself to blame. As for Shanghai, if he is good enough, he will make it.

Lol it is really incredible.... each time gasquet lose a match it's always the same thing: he's overatted, has no mental and others bullshit....

Gasquet had injuries... a knee problem and an elbow one... he plays anyway not like in the us where everybody said he was too weak not to play.

So here he play but was at 30% of his level and paulo was good.

Do don't try to use this defeat to judge gasquet when you even don't known the circonstances.

gasquet has time to sort himself out. He shouldn't count on it though because i doubt he will have some federer like transformation.

His progress will be far more gradual.

Is Gasquet mathematically out of Shanghai?

No, with Berdych, Haas, Blake, Ljubicic, Moya, Robredo, Chela, Youzhny out too at the same stage, nothing is decided yet.

It is no consolation, but the Shanghai pressure seems like a virus, it hardly left anyone unaffected. ;)

I like both players. But, while Gasquet gets more attention than he deserves, with PHM is quite opposite.

I seriously doubt he is counting on it. Maybe some deluded fans, but certainly not him.
