Not strictly true just yet. ;)

Still got Robredo, Blake, Gasquet and Ljubo to finish their matches today (out of the immediate contenders).

What I think is excellent is that we could have some of the lesser contenders standing on a near equal footing with the likes of Haas, Berdych and Moya in a matter of days. How exciting would it be if 8 players were competing for the final places, in Paris?!!

PHM is hitting a lot of winners.

Gasquet waited PHM to lose the set, waiting 2nd balls on break points 30 yards behind the baseline. PHM got a bit lucky (painting the lines) in the tie break and won the first set.

Richie way way way too defensive... he should have won the first set and now he's in trouble.

Actually, the last few days have yielded amusing results from the two sports I'm actively following right now, ATP and the NHL. Chokes and tanks here, blown leads (including one from 4-0) and own goals in OT there... No need to watch movie comedies or TV sitcoms when athletes decide to put on such funny performances :o ;)

Yes but there's a reason about 14 players could still technically qualify for the last 2 or 3 spots - there are no better players, not consistently, for one reason or another.

Exactly, which is why I don't get all the 'Boredo' bitching  Not that I wouldn't prefer some other 'more talented' player to make Shanghai in his place but when so many of them keep losing matches they usually shouldn't, why should Robredo be faulted for rightfully earning a spot - regardless of how competitive the Spaniard is once he gets there?

10-17-2007, 11:52 PM
Gasquet is the only one who i would say didn't have a bad loss. I kind of expected him to lose to PHM on this surface. Losing to Nalbandian in general would not be so bad for Berdych either but obviously the way he lost made it terrible. i reckon whoever performs better in a smaller tournament after Madrid will make it. I don't see any on these guys going far in Paris without an easy draw.

We still have the possibility that a guy who hasn't been past the second round all year at Slams, nor past R3 in TMS events prior to Madrid, could still make Shanghai - Karlovic.

Which is pretty ridiculous.

Karlovic can only make it by going very far in both Madrid of Paris. So if he makes it, he will have done very well at two MS, plus good performances at optionals. With the three top players winning almost every big tourney, there are not that many points left for all the other players, and it is expected that the lower qualifiers for Shanghai will not have a very stellar record - but they are still better than everyone else who didn't qualify.

I think you over-estimate Karlovic's chances. Even if he made the SF here, which would be by far his best ever result at a TMS, he still neeeds to beat Federer and/or make another SF appearance in Paris. On top of that, he needs all the players above him to keep losing.

Oh I agree - I'm not having a go at Karlovic or the system.

More expressing dismay at the rest of the top 20 for crumbling like this. Outside Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, hardly anyone has asserted themselves this season for any length of time whatsoever. We have a big 3, with Davydenko a respectable 4th, and then it's pretty much bedlam further down with a bunch of players exchanging places in and out of the top 10 as their form improves and then suffers.

It makes for an interesting end to the race to Shanghai but I'm not sure it'll make for a very interesting TMC - there'll be cannon fodder.

i agree it is realistically impossible for karlovic to qualify. Mathemetically possible.
