Sad to see Safin lose, but an awesome performance from Ivo who clearly isn't just serve anymore.

Only serve?

Wins over Haas, Tojo and Safin in a row WITHOUT NEEDING TO PLAY A SINGLE TIE-BREAK IN INDOORS!!!!

For all those who say Safin is motivated, watch a tape of this match.
You knew after 2 games that Safin would lose the match in an hour.

I've been told it's because his first name is pronounced similar to 'evil' so it's a pun on that Austin Powers character. :D

I thought we called him Dr. because he always gives tennisplayers the same, reliable treatment. The double/triple tiebreak. :D

Safin said he would retire if he has a bad 2007. looks like its happening sadly. But well played Dr, I'm not a fan of his but now he's learning to do other stuff than just serve, he's going up in my estimation. Slowly though!

Even easier than expected. I thought of at least one tiebreak being involved.

I woke up just in time for the second set and the Doctor is definitely playing well. Poor Marat looked punch drunk.

It seemed to me Safin did not want to be out there.

just sad to watch really. Safin would have been much better off being ugly and having a boring personality in my opinion.

Karlovic has certainly improved his game but having said that he didn't have to do much with Safin playing two typically idiotic service games at the start of each set and missing an easy forehand on the only break points he had.

Marat out-rallied by the Doctor. :o

It was a Sampras like performance, he only came alive for one return game in each set and for those 2 BPs he had to save.

Has Davydenko's withdrawel been confirmed?

Wouldn't that be funny if Ivo keeps this up and a year from now we start thinking of him as an elite player like a Sampras. OK, don't laugh, just a little fantasy. Of course last year my fantasy was he'd reach top 30 by the end of the year :worship: . Actually, to be honest, it was top 40 and new career high. I didn't have enough faith.

OK thanks, that's who I would have guessed, but he didn't make it past the 1st round of qualifying  so he isn't even in contention to be a lucky loser.

I guess that would make sense, since blokes who lose early in qualies probably get the hell out of dodge ala Tiger at the 2005 PGA Championship.

Is Davydenko really injured, or is someone mislead by the bump of the Davy-Sargsian thread; a match from 2005, in which Davy retired with a fixed-wrist injury ?

Good win for Ivo. Nice to see him getting wins in AMS events, he hasn't done at all well in them compared to his performances in MM's and that's despite beating some capable players in the smaller events.

Well, for a walking zombie disguised as a Halloween pumpkin, he was executing some effortless backhand winners and sublime serve & drop volleys. ;) (Forehands still predicticably erratic).

However, I'm very disappointed in him. He gave away the match because of 2 poor service games, that I can accept. What disgusted me was his totally unprofessional behaviour, his disinterest, that awful body language - give me the shouting and the racquet abuses any day, at least he's making an effort.
