Feliciano Lopez - What does he have to do to get into top 20?

Such a good player. Very good serve, amazing at the net, solid baseliner. I am amazed that this guy isn't ranked higher (currently 42). I can't see any major flaws in his game (maybe mental strength), he's got the shots to be a top 20 player (maybe even higher), so I was just wondering what everyone thinks is stopping Lopez getting into top 20?

You must blink every time he hits a backhand.

jk. Seriously, that backhand side is what most often gets him into trouble and it is most often what causes him to lose a match.

...for a serious answer. We say it all the time, and it can still be said - his backhand. The slice is good, but he doesn't hit through the ball very well. Costa has improved it, but there is still work to be done.

I wouldn't say he is particularly solid from the back, either. When I saw some of his matches against Koubek and Wawrinka, last week, I'd always get the feeling he'd lose the majority of baseline rallies against those guys. I liked his attacking tennis, but he didn't do that as much as I'd have liked.

I know that David Ferrer had an amazing year and he comes as a favourite into the match against Lopez, but I really do feel that we will witness an upset. He played really well against Volandri, who I know isn't that good on indoor hardcoruts but still it was quite a performance.

Defeating Volandri on carpet isn't a big achievement. He needs backhand and mental stability. It can give him a chance

but I do agree, maybe he should worry more about his game than how he looks on court!

hahahahah:crazy:

he could probably start by not getting thoroughly outplayed by D.Y. at the U.S. Open

but yeah, in all seriousness obviously backhand

he could make into top 20 eventually - but he's not beating David "Pics" Ferrer

The answer to your question.

Even if I don't really like the bloke (just a mite TOO fancy for me, heh), I must admit he has a GREAT game, amazing serve, good baseline game - but his BH often lets him down for a bit.

If he'd be able to concentrate on his TENNIS a little more than on his looks & on how many groupies he'll be able to bang, he'd indeed have a good chance to be a top-20 player, as he sure has the talent. Now for the attitude, eh?

Yeah, call it the "Marat Syndrome".

I dunno, Karin. I usually agree with you. I'm even coming around on the Federer front, but don't tell anyone. But I think the Lopez backhand is like a bullseye. Anyone with good aim is going to take him out.

That's why I said I felt like I just made some stupid post, heh (the "OOPS" bit :p). Nay, them Lady Groupies are only interested in ONE thing - and when considering LaLo, who could blame 'em?

Guess that's the main reason why I've always been a Major Failure at Groupie-ism...

RogiRafaFan86

I don't know about mascara, but I swear he wears eyeliner from time to time. I don't know why, he doesn't need to. His eyes stand out just fine. They are beautiful. :)

As for the original post: I've always said that Feli's talent is not in question, at least not for me. That backhand, as others have said, has always been a liability for him. Occasionally, he'll hit a nice one, sometimes even for a winner. But most of the time...:o

He's been doing quite well for himself as of late, for the past few months or so. I've even seen some slight improvement in that backhand. And I know I've seen improvement in his confidence and mentality. Credit to Albert Costa in both cases, I am sure. If he continues that, he can finish the year top 40, top 35, easy.

He will never be ranked that high, he's complacent. Lalo gets by on serve and forehand...he doesn't try his heart out on court, he doesn't work on the things he needs to improve off court, and mentally he goes away in matches. Simply put there is nothing he can do, it would require him becoming someone that he isn't. He's flashy, and I admired his effort against Federer at the US Open, he played to the best of his ability. If you gave him Hewitt's will to succeed, and work ethic he could be top 10...easy. Then again this could be said about a lot of players.

it's more mental than everything else i think...it's not rare for him to give up and start throwing a fit pouting his lips and all

He and verdasco are mentally unstable players.
i watched lopez against at USO. I thought he played great in the first two sets.(especially with his serve.)
then melted away in the second set.
his forehand is okay but it is very erratic and his backhand is pretty mediocore. serve is good but it isn't really accurate.

Talking of talented but mentally unstable players, anyone saw Verdasco play yesterday? He was awesome, producing some rockets out there, but that was against a very weak player. He had some really good matches against Roddick in the past, but more often than not when he has to play under pressure he crumbles.

LOPEZ is a joke. Cant hit two good backhands in a row and is mentality so questionable. Sometimes he constantly talkes to himself. And when he has enough of it, he goes for 2nd serves aces :retard: which mostly turn out as doubles and overall too much UEs.
I am not sure about that babe banging, but Im not surprised if its true :tape:

If he could just do well in this tournament (or Paris maybe) I feel that he's get into top 20 next year. He needs one decent tournament to give him that extra confidence. Like many of you pointed out his backhand is a weakness, but I still believe that he's a very talented player and that he's most definitely top 20 material.
