Hmmm. The tennis gods took pity on Canas, he's way over on the other side of the draw.

Poor Stan, getting an in-form Nalby on the first round.

F-lo and berdych got each other! What a tough draw for the both of them!

Poor Stan, getting an in-form Nalby on the first round.

Maybe David is a bit tired after Madrid. Stan had a few days rest and preparation on the court already. Should hopefully be a good match between these two :)

Luna, I hope nobody of your family and friends has been harmed by the happenings there

About todays match:

Roger insisted to play today to get a day off tomorrow. I don't know when he arrived in Basel and how long he could train before the match.

Berrer came really well into the match after a nervous performance in the first set. He had over 80% on 1st serve in the second set whilst Roger seemed to be anywhere but not on the court until being down 0:4.
Too many UEs from Roger and he clearly wasn't convinced with his performance today, but the only thing which counts is the win.

This is what Roger said after his match yesterday:

"My focus is on Basel, not last week," Federer said. "That said, it's a probably a good thing to get right back into it after a final loss."

"I'm now having to explain why I lost a set. It's almost laughable," Federer said. "It happens. I wish I could have played better in the second. I was struggling on serve and on the baseline. But I never felt 100 percent comfortable all match."

"The conditions are different here, slower," Federer said. "The balls are really heavy here. It's hard to put away a winner. I'm glad I came through in the end."

Nalbandian beaten by Swiss Wawrinka in Basel

(releads with Nalbandian defeat)

By Mark Ledsom

BASEL, Switzerland, Oct 24 (Reuters) - David Nalbandian made a surprise exit in the opening round of the Swiss Indoors on Wednesday, beaten 7-6 6-2 by local favourite Stanislas Wawrinka.

Nalbandian pulled off a shock victory over Roger Federer in Sunday's Madrid Masters final, only to be humbled three days later in the world number one's home city and by his Swiss Davis Cup team mate.

"It was a win for Roger and for me," Wawrinka told reporters. "I spoke to Roger after the Basel draw was made and he told me to win this one."

The opening set was close with both players saving one break point to line up a tiebreak won 7-5 by Wawrinka.

The world number 35 then broke serve twice in the second set to earn a meeting with Czech fifth seed Tomas Berdych, who put out Spain's Feliciano Lopez 7-6 3-6 6-3.

Although ranked 17 places below Nalbandian, the Swiss number two boasts a 4-2 head-to-head record against the Argentine.

GREAT MATCH

"I always enjoy playing him, even in the first two matches that I lost, but beating him today at home was unbelievable," said Wawrinka.

"It was a great match for me and I was very happy with how I served. I'm sure Roger will be just as happy with the way I played as with the result itself." American fourth seed James Blake stayed on course for a place at the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai with a 6-3 6-4 win over Spain's Oscar Hernandez.

The world number seven, who next faces Croatian Ivo Karlovic, is 10th in the race for the Masters Cup's eight qualifying spots but will go joint eighth if he makes the semi-finals here.

"To reach the Masters Cup two years in a row would be great because it would mean I've had a great year of tennis," said Blake.

Sixth seed Guillermo Canas also progressed with a 6-4 6-3 triumph over fellow Argentine Jose Acasuso.

I just watched the interview and will give a little summary about it, although it is difficult because of some parts of the Swiss German and all the giggle:

Günthardt: He got a bit rebellious in the 2nd set. Have you thought about yesterday then?

Roger: Not yesterday, but the day before yesterday. I was in front today and didn't trail 0:3 or even 0:4. That made it easier for me. I felt better today and therefore I played better.

Günthardt: Today you played against an 19 years old one who is 1m95, yesterday against someone who weighs 100 kilos.

Roger: Yesterday?

Günthardt: The day before yesterday. Do you consider yourself as someone with an imposing figure?

Roger: Mediocrity.

Günthardt: Andre Agassi once said that he had to develop every year. The players would get larger, stronger and quicker. Is this true?

Roger: He was right about this. It's the case. But ask me something serious.

Günthardt: Ok, something serious. You are going to play against an old acquaintance now, Nicolas Kiefer, who is back on the tour. He is in incredible form, already in Madrid and in his two rounds here. Are you looking forward to the match?

Roger: It wil be tough.

Günthardt: Ok, now lets be serious.

Roger: At least once. I'm looking forward to tomorrow. It will surely be another great day again and I hope it stays like this.

It seems I didn't really understand a very important part of the interview.
Someone of the Swiss fans on Rogers forum mentioned why Roger really laughed during the interview. He misunderstood Günthards comment about the height of the players. Günthardt asked him whether he would be the shortest in the lockerroom and Roger said he couldn't really say it as he wouldn't look so careful.

Nice win. Good luck against Kiefer next!

In some GM stats posted for winners I think saw 10 aces, 7 FH and 6 BH.

It seems I didn't really understand a very important part of the interview.
Someone of the Swiss fans on Rogers forum mentioned why Roger really laughed during the interview. He misunderstood Günthards comment about the height of the players. Günthardt asked him whether he would be the shortest in the lockerroom and Roger said he couldn't really say it as he wouldn't look so careful.

well the interview is only 2 sentences from this article :p

«Ich lag stets vorne und das machte es einfacher für mich», bilanzierte Federer nach der Partie. «Ich fühlte mich besser als am Dienstag gegen Berrer und spielte auch besser.»

"I was always ahead so it was easier for me, i was feeling way better than tuesday against berrer and i played better aswell"

I saw the match, there's no way he hit 41 winners in that time. And he had 10 aces as well, at least the commentator counted the 10th in the final game.
I didn't see it, someone posted the stats on Roger's site. I know they're not always right with the match stats.

Are you serious? Not saying I don't believe you - just how incredulous I am that in his HOME town, they couldn't see what a gem they have in their midst? Words fail me.

As for Karlovic ... words fail me there too! The match was on in the other room and I only saw the replay of Berdych smashing his racquet after he lost. I then felt like smashing something too as I so wanted him to win. I simply cannot watch the Croat so may well give the match tomorrow a miss and look at the result later.

Yes Roger was really calm and cool... No I'm not on the pics, too busy taking some shots.

The girl that appears often on the left of Roger was from San Diego, she explained that she travelled last week in Madrid and this week in Basel, just to follow Roger. and then federer earns laureus.

the height of embarassment.

just out of curiosity, does anyone know whether federer wins these awards by a huge margin. It would be interesting to see whether they release these kinds of figures because there a lot of famous sportsmen + women on the laureus panel. They are from different countries and have their own biases but they seem to agree that fed is tops.

it would be interesting to know if jordan or pele votes for tiger woods/ ronaldinho and becker/navratilova vote for federer. i'm sure they would never release these though.

Well the beginning was pretty yawn-worthy. Karlovic has improved enormously no doubt and he has nice volleys but frankly his baseline game isn't top 100, the guy can't even hit a drive backhand and had only two winners off the forehand. I know some people like him but quite to put it mildly I'm not a fan

NYCtennisfan

7-1 in TB's against Ivo. I believe that Ivo has the lowest % of his 1st serves as aces against Federer.

20% at Wimby '04--8 ace differential
23% in Gstaad--7 ace differential
26% in Canada--13 ace differential
30% today---6 ace differential

This week at Basel:

40% against Berdman--24 ace differential
38% against Blake--15 ace differential
55% against Chiudinelli--13 ace differential

In Madrid:

36% against Kiefer--18 ace differential
56% agaisnt Hernandex--20 ace differential
45% against Safin--14 ace differential

In almost every single one of his matches this year, Ivo has had at least 30% of his 1st serves in play go down as aces and in most cases, it's 35%-50%.

NYCtennisfan

OK:

Nadal on 5385.
Federer on 7130 going into tomorrow.

Nadal can gain a maximum of 1050 points from winning Paris (500) and winning the TMC undefeated (750, but he's defending 200 there so his maximum gain would be 550). That would put him on 6435 at year's end.

If Federer wins tomorrow he goes to 7205 with 750 points from the TMC left to defend for the rest of the year. 7205 - 750 = 6455, ie a 20-point safety cushion.

I've long dreamed of a Basel-Paris double, particularly in recent years when he was injured and couldn't play the indoor season, but it'll be a tough ask with his draw and playing a third straight week. If he does withdraw I can understand him making top fitness for Shanghai his first priority, because that is the more important event, but he certainly won't be getting a Christmas card from Pioline if he makes it four no-shows in a row.

I would rather prefer a week off. So in Shanghai he will destroy everyone and take the title. And finish the year at n1 once again.

Paris has no reason to bitch this year because aside from Roddick (and maybe Roger) all the top players will be there. It's not like last year.

Not sorry I missed this one ... I just cannot stand to watch Karlovic at all, even for Roger. Karlovic's matches are a borefest and bring back memories of why I fell out of love with tennis some time back. You know the result before the match starts 7-6 7-6. My nightmare is that one of these days, Roger is going to trip up on his serve and lose to this guy ... that would be the biggest travesty out there. Will be watching tomorrow of course! Good luck Roger.

Thanks, Sjengster. That's what I needed, the points available at the TMC. I had read somewhere that it was worth 1000 and that was what was throwing my calculations off, and since I couldn't find its value at the ATP site, I wasn't sure. What kind of points do the people who DON'T get through the round-robin to the semis get? I saw that last year Roddick, for example, got 100 points but it showed no results, so it leaves me curious. Thanks for your help.:)

Each RR match is worth 100 ranking points, I believe. Roddick did beat Ljubicic at last year's event in his opening match, that result should be there.

roger:eh,yesterday no the day before yesterday...hahaha...that was a good excuse for me....good try right?no em... this time i was in front with the result ,the last time i was 0:3 down , in fact 0:4

so today it was easier i felt better and i played better than the last match.

roger: am.. no.. i think im about average, but i dont look so closely you know !
... that's why... hahaha ...no...hahaha

Q: one time Andrea Agassi said ,that he has to improve his performance every year.
they are getting taller, stronger and faster.do you agree with him?

roger: yeh ..am.. laughing
no... he is right
that's probably so... hahaha

it is not so serious

Q: good .. let's try to be serious now!
now,you played against an old aquaintance,Nicolas Kiefer.
he was risen from the dead"comeback" now he is unbelievably in form. in the first two rounds he hardly give up a game

roger: and what do you mean?

Q:hahaha... it will be hard...right? hahaha

roger: he was a long .. he.. he was injuired for a long time or not ? hahaha ...
and he is inform again. its a super ..hahaha....

Q: no seriously...

roger: im looking foreward to tomorrow ,i have to say that tomorrow will also be a wonderfull day
and this evening FCB(swiss soccor club ,basel)is going to win... and tomorrow we will start up again in top form ! thanks very much

Q: we are looking foreward to it already thanks a lot

I don't think it was a bad performance at all from Roger. He looked to me very fit and quick esp in the 1st set, his forehand also working nicely, and some nice S&Vs. I think he lost some concentration in the 2nd set and errors began to fly around. The match looked very easy for Roger all in all.

I think he moved even better in this Basel than in Madrid which I'm so happy to see. He's definitely not fading away.

Interesting that almost all Federer's wins against Nieminen came before Nadal arrived on the scene and they started facing off regularly; at times today I thought he'd developed something of a lefty complex because of all those encounters with Nadal, even though Nieminen has nowhere near the pace and spin of Nadal on his groundstrokes. That said, they hadn't played for over two years and the Shark does seem to hit with a little more venom off both sides. His serve still remains attackable, though, and I think that's the main reason Federer feels confident against him as he knows he can always get into his service games.

It was a good first set performance, Nieminen had many half-chances on Federer's serve and Roger had to come up with some good scrambling and deft net play to keep holding on. Second set was dire as far as returning games went, particularly his sulky body language after every error, but he got fortunate that Nieminen basically handed the break to him at 4-4 with 4 unforced errors.

Yep.

JN was always ahead in the second, 32* then *43 holds with love games through out. Then Roger befitted with a few errors and a DF from JN to break at 44 and serve it out.

Roger played okay, but there was no breathtaking shots like you would expect. He knew what he had to do and he did it.

There is an article in today's morning paper "20 Minuten" that Roger is criticized by some health experts, because he thanked the main sponser "Davidoff", a huge tobacco company.

An easy summary in English:
Roger Federer is criticized, because he thanked in the trophy ceremony the main sponcer of the Swiss Indoors, Davidoff, a tobacco company, for their long lasting cooperation. Over 500 health experts from all over the world are demanding in an online petition that Federer shouldn't play any more in the last ATP tournament which is sponsored by a tobacco company.

I am not asking you to sign, but just informing you what is going on.

I'm a health expert too, but definitely will NOT sign this petition. People should stop being overzealous in their attempts to tell other people what's good for them. No-one in the world considers starting smoking because Davidoff sponsors Basel!

Yeah it is pretty stupid considering consuming a Davidoff product is perfectly legal. I suppose it would be in the ATP's interest not to have tournaments sponsored by tobacco or alcohol companies, but the players shouldn't be caught up in this political nonsense.

And to think when the WTA tour started in 1971 it was called the Virginia Slims Circuit and up until 1994 was sponsored by Virginia Slims.
