I like Capriati, But it would be nice to see a russian winning this. And who knows, why not Paola Suarez?

My picks :
Capriati def. Miskina
Dementieva def. Suarez

Capriati def. Dementieva (it would be a close one)

Can't believe how sharp Elena's ground game is. Even on clay, she was pounding Moresmo into submission. She and Anastasia have definitely improved a lot.

Of all the matches I've seen ... I'm only impressed with Dementieva...she has hit winners to take the match and not rally and wait for the opponent's mistake unlike Capriati and Myskina....

I'm very disappointed with the serena match even though it was a three setter....

And Paola played well, but mostly it was sharapova who broke down (40 uf errors???)

I really hope Dementieva wins cos she's working for it.... i dun want it to be a trend of patience in tennis and see who made the least errors in long rallys... it's smart play but i feel that those who does the extra deserves to win...

elena has really played her ass off. if she had a serve as good as even jenn's or maria's, she would be number one. that type of groundstroke balance would win her titles on any surface. i think she will take out paola, and jenn SHOULD beat myskina. however, if it stays wet, myskina has more energy and could wear jenn down. myskina also has weapons, don't get me wrong. but jenn's serve and forehand are much better and jenn's backhand is on kiel with myskina's.

sharapova-- by far the worst i have ever seen her play. did no one tell her it was going to rain???

Today's quarter final results have reawakened my interest in women's tennis. The Russians have been knocking on the door for a while now making a lot of rounds of 16 and quarters but now they look like they are ready to start contending for the grand prizes. I would be over the moon if Anastasia won the title but even if Paola (a very likable cheerful player) or Elena win I will be pleased. Anyone but Capriati.

Wow!!! I just realized that it's been a while since there has been a winner whose name doesnt have either Williams or Hennin-Hardenne in it...

It's great to see these four women emerge from the pack to vie for this title. I'll be happy if any of them win. They all have great individual stories. What I really want, though, is for all of the women to come back healthy and match tough so that I can see the strongest field possible. This French was a good change of pace.

Dementieva--hope she's looks better on the serve than she did last year.

Not really! I watched the match today, and Dementieva had hit four double faults in the space of two service games.

And even once she had won the first set 6-4, she stayed on the court (whilst Mauresmo jogged unconvincingly over to her seat) to throw in a practice first serve! :haha:

Dementieva's slow second serve slice can be nastily effective for those who are not used to it. ;)

I'd be happy with whoever wins the title now.

I feel that we're going to have a lot shaky, nervous play and some choking from these final four players in the last two rounds, just because they all realize that this is the opportunity of a lifetime with no Belgians or Williams remaining.

I don't think Capriati will win. People forget that she's forgotten how to win tournaments. Yeah, she did "win" New Haven '03 when both Mauresmo and Davenport retired against her mid-match, but besides that she hasn't won a tournament since the 2002 Aussie Open. Dementieva is my pick, as she seems really fearless and aggressive, and I don't think she'll flounder on the big stage like she did earlier this year in the Miami final. If not her, I'd like to see Myskina get it.

Elena said herself, though, that her "weak" slice out-wide serves were not a problem today because Mauresmo wasn't attacking them, and they even helped her because they opened up the court for her crosscourt forehand.

She's right up there with foot speed, she moves soooo well :worship: her 1st serve is good, she can get it around 105 mph fairly consistently, but her second serve is :retard: that one can be punced on. Her strokes are very solid, that is when she has her head on straight. Her backhand is her bigger side, but she tends to redirect pace moreso than creating her own pace. and she likes to hit angles and crosscourt shots. So much for the defensive game. Her attack game is of some real sting too. In the last few games vs. Capriati, Myskina blew Cap off the court with aggressive play.

You are a bit underestimating the two russian girls' potential. They both have a good consistent game, both good at attacking at the right moment, good at defense against power play. They can force those 'unforced errors' with their consistency too. This final is a beauty to watch, like a breathe of fresh air after long period of American-Belgium domination.

The russian force is finally being reckoned.

i said SORT OF defence game. And I also said she uses pace very well, that helps her in the power department, but she can pack some punch herself as well. What kept her in all those points were her footspeed, and I agree Hingis was faster than Myskina earlier on. Hingis of the later years of her career is slower than the Myskina of now. Myskina doesn't let people get away with shit serves, she can attack weak serves very well, but it's all about if she can actually get it over the net because she can smack a lot of key returns in the net.

Very true TF, but I think Myskina blitzes Nalbandian in the foot speed department. They play that catty tennis and lull people into long rallies and bring out the errors from their opponents, but both can smack the cover off the ball for the winner

alfonsojose

I like them bith but i enjoy Dementieva's agressive baseline game a little more. But for the sake of tennis Myskina has to eat that second serve. Dementieva has to improve that .. :(

Chris Seahorse
06-03-2004, 11:39 PM
Myskina is as fast as any player i`ve ever seen. The improvements in her game are are coming because she is finally taking advantage of that speed by not making so many careless errors. She seems to have learnt how she can make it pretty close to impossible for her opponent to hit alot of winners against her by denying them too many angles. She`s also becoming very crafty using pace and lack of it. She can whallop the backhand when she choses but understands better than most of the top girls that hitting every ball as hard as you can doesn`t always win you matches. Many of the top girls like pace. Hingis`s big mistake playing the Williams sisters was that she felt she needed to add pace to her shots to stay with them. Of course she was never going to beat the Williams sisters by trying to outslug them.

GO ELENA!!!

Elena is the one that should win as she has a more attractive game and behaviour on and off court, she has had major success before, she also has more qualities of a champion and could be a good ambassador for the sport - something tennis always needs. She totally deserves this title! :yippee:

Anastasia is good too and she's been quietly doing really well on the WTA but this is only her first major result and she should wait.....she looks so Addams family to me so I sometimes feel freaked when I look at her.....she sometimes reminds me of the girl from Welcome to the Dollhouse and that dumb movie Sorority Boys. :p :D

We saw it coming sooner or later because Karolina Sprem (don't misspell her last name!!! already could play against Venus just like we saw in the clay season.
It was a known fact that things were going to turn around for the sisters. They were once with new, improved games that people feared and couldn't solve. But like all cycles, the players veteran or new, adapt. And their style is a bit one dimensional with just plain hit hit hit that it wore them down and the other players already knew what to expect in their games. The sisters did it to themselves in a way, because of their ways and activities on and off court.
