ARGENTINA'S world No.9 David Nalbandian has taken the final spot in the field for January's AAMI Classic field in Melbourne, becoming the fourth top-10 player in the eight-man line-up.
Nalbandian recently won back-to-back Masters Series titles in Madrid and Paris, beating world No.1 Roger Federer and No.2 Rafael Nadal.
The performances lifted the 26-year-old from 25th in world rankings to his latest position.
Nalbandian has finished in the top ten for the past five years and will be making his sixth Kooyong appearance.
Also in the field in the round-robin rehearsal for the Australian Open are world No.1 Roger Federer, Andy Roddick (6), Fernando Gonzalez (7), Andy Murray (11), Tommy Haas (12), Ivan Ljubicic (18) and Marat Safin (56).
The AAMI Classic begins at Kooyong on January 9 with the final on January 12.

Nalby takes the last spot!

Ah Nalbandian is taking the last spot. Thats cool, he's really nice and enjoyable to watch. Everyone here has already played at Kooyong before though, it would have been nice if they got somebody new as well, but I'm just being picky. The field is rather nice. Regardless, VAMOS GONZO!!!

How are the players selected

bailarina
01-01-2008, 12:07 PM
I don't know the official process but I hear the top 10 players start getting invited usually in the middle of the previous year. Usually one or two spots are kept for a 'hot' player who isn't in the top 10 but someone that people want to see.

Is Kooyong changing to Plexicushion or staying with Rebounce Ace?

bailarina
01-05-2008, 05:01 AM
According to Tennis Week (http://www.tennisweek.com/news/fullstory.sps?inewsid=510697) They've switched as well. It makes sense because the top players go there for the sole purpose of warming up for the Australian Open.

Ferrero Forever
01-05-2008, 07:03 AM
Yeah I'm pretty sure they have switched. I went past there a while ago and had a peek through the gates and the court was all ripped up, so I'm assuming they're changing the surface too.

I went to the tournament today, and it was a great time:) Marcos VS Davydenko was good. They're both not playing their absolute best, but thats understandable. I think they'll be fine by the time the AO comes. Roddick was playing brilliantly, Ljubicic played pretty badly. Murray was awful, Safin played very well though he could have done better. Gonzo was not at his best either, accuracy was dreadful. Anyway it was the first match of the season for most of these guys, so I think they'll pick up by the time the AO comes.

I see that Davydenko has withdrawn from his match against Brydan Klein, as I've seen photos of Vince Spadea saying that he played against Klein yet Davydenko is on the schedule to play tomorrow against Ljubicic. So what's the problem with him?

Meanwhile, the event suffered its fourth withdrawal in as many days with the exit of Russian Nikolay Davydenko today.

The World number four told organisers he was suffering from exhaustion and could not play in today's forecast 40 degree heat.

Good on Davydenko. The heat was horrible today, at least he didn't push his body to the point where he had to put up with those conditions. If I was playing, I would have withdrawn too.

Just in case anyone is wondering, Blake beat Kiefer in 3 tough sets. Both players are playing well (damn you Kiefer, you need to lose 1st round at the Aus Open), but Blake was that little bit better. It was a nice entertaining match.

Safin wins 6-3, 6-3. lookes like the same safin, all the same shots. just a slight shakiness, cautiousness, like a kid trying on a pair of skates after a long time. other than that. the same shot. overpowered gonzalez. pretty good victory. after that victory, i think if he can gets his first serve percentage up, there is a good chance we could see the federer-safin rematch at the Australian Open 2008 :)
