There should be a feature where you can change the stream quality, there's 450K, 850K and 1Mb. 850K is the middle one and doesn't have any sound the other two quality streams should have sound so if you switch the quality from 850 to 450 or 1Mb you should have sound.

I'm thinking about buying this for 2009. Do you get live access to any match that you want to see? How's the video quality?

Schu
11-06-2008, 10:54 PM
It has feeds from 2 courts and you can pick which one you want. The live scores from all courts show up at the bottom of the screen so you can easily switch back and forth between the two video matches when one gets interesting. Video quality has been EXCELLENT. Last year they also archived matches so you could see them on demand, not sure if they are doing that this year, haven't checked.

Only negative - the annoying announcers but you can mute it if you can't stand to hear Robbie Koneig (I have no idea how to spell his name) say "spot on" one more time or the other guy say "Brilliant".

You don't like them? As far as commentators go, I think they're top notch. They often have relevant and interesting things to say about the play, they're occasionally funny, and best of all, they know when to shut up...which I don't think I can say about any other set of commentators I've listened to.

Regardless of from the commentators though, I'd definitely recommend forking up the cash for it. If you live in the U.S. and don't get the Tennis Channel there's no other way for you to see these top tournaments, which is a shame.

Well and I hope that we’ll at least keep what we’ve got so far because the new website for 2009 (incl. WTA and the 500 series events) is up www.tennistv.com and worries me that the demo videos are flash videos. "Live streaming of all Masters 1000 events plus 500s from quarter finals onwards (at TennisTV.com)" for $69.95/€54.95.
That's how much I payed in March, so it doesn't sound so bad. Just wondering if I'll be able to access the 500s with my old subscription or not. I think I'd probably prefer a cheaper Masters 1000 only subscription, since the smaller tournaments are usually covered by the betting services (usually not for US residents though). At least up to now.

Oh, and they increased the price for the tournament pass from €11.95 to €15.95.

Anyways, I didn't even know till now, that I can also access the ATP 500 tournaments with my old Masters Series subscription. Indian Wells should be the last tournament, then I'll have to renew it.

Regarding the site:
It sucks due to the fact that it's all in Flash. Not only is Flash horrible, I can't record it with the usual tools either. Guess I'll have to hunt down some news tools.
And am I the only one with Firefox and an old 5:4 screen who gets a messed up aspect ratio instead of a video with black bars when clicking on fullscreen?

There are none anymore. They don't use proper streams now, they use crappy Flash ones which can't be opened in Windows Media Player like the old ones could. They've totally ruined the service, which had been great for the past couple of years. Good for them that they suckered me in with a good deal for an annual subscription just before the TMC. It won't happen again if they don't change things back.

There aren't any, I think, which sucks since I'd like to watch the streams with my own external Windows Media Player instead of a stupid browser window. Even if such links existed, probably only the person with the necessary URL Helper program would be able to use them.

They better do something about Firefox compatibility if that is the reason. As far as I read at least 12-15% of the internet users have Firefox as their standard brower. I'll try the IE later on, but I'd really prefer to use the same browser as usual. Shouldn't the new service make life easier for the users instead of doing the opposite?

I was talking about the aspect ratio. I guess you have a widescreen TV? On normal non-widescreen monitors/TVs, there should be black bars (letter boxed) to preserve the correct aspect ratio, but I don't get those. Instead, the whole screen is filled up and the aspect ratio is all messed up. The players have "egg heads".

Yes the switch to flash streams have not been an improvement - the quality is poorer, fullscreen is not good quality and stretches to 4:3 from 16:9 instead of letterboxing, and you can't leave it fullscreen on one monitor while using another. Plus there's no easy way I've found of zooming the image to somewhere closer to fullscreen.

I'm less than thrilled.

I've been using atdhe.net instead because the stretching at full screen annoys me a lot. I just can't believe that they still haven't fixed it. But aside from that, the picture quality is also significantly worse than it used to be.

I know - it's really annoying.

I think I'm going to cancel my subscription.....

I assumed that this site would work better in IE. With the IE browser, I couldn't believe that I was paying to see so many semi-pop-up ads blocking login boxes and other content. The site actually works a lot better with FF (and Adblock, obviously) but in principal no one should be bothered by intrusive ads if you are paying to access a site (especially since tennis is not that popular and they should be trying to please subscribers, not just exploit them), In IE there were issues with controls (volume etc),

The site offers too little in terms of non-live streaming content (big problem),

the stream quality is pretty damn deplorable considering you pay for it (HELLO!!! PAYING FOR THIS!!) i just watched some European TV from the US for free on a far far better quality stream),

Basically, in these economic times they won't survive if they don't offer more value. I think they should be trying harder :)

How can we cancel the annual repeating subscription? I only have a few days left before it's automatically renewed.

The FAQ says:
You may cancel your subscription for the Services by logging in and going to the My Account page and clicking on the "Cancel Subscription" button and sending an e-mail to customer services at the following e-mail address customerservices@performgroup.com
Cancellation must be made no less than 5 working days prior to the end of the month or year (depending on whether you are paying monthly or annually respectively) for which you have paid.

But I can't find the "Cancel Subscription" button in my account...

I thought the same, 5 *working* days means I need to make up my mind very soon.

Do you have a "Cancel Subscription" button in your account? I only see buttons to change my details, change my credit card details and upgrade my account.
Maybe it means my subscription won't be automatically renewed then? But my subscription history says "2008 annual subscription, followed by 2009 annual subscription".

I have a different but similar problem. Knowing my subscription was nearly due, and wondering how they were going to deal with the choice of both men's and women's or men's only, I went into "my account". I found my email address was out of date (even though it was changed before the last renewal). I followed the instructions to change my email address, which involved filling in a form like an application for membership: it came back with the reply that it could not be processed because the "username already exists". Well of course it does! It's me! I only want to change the email address!

Yeah, it doesn't seem to work. I can only get the Channel Surfing stream to be recorded (not even atdhe.net) - but the break for the WTA matches causes it to stop sometimes so that I don't get what I want recorded.

Their costumer service is a joke.

This is my corrospondence with them during Miami, after they didn't show Roger's second round match, but showed Nadal's. I've never been more frustrated in my life.

_________

Hi there,

I'm currently on my third annual subscription to the ATP
tennis feeds, I enjoy your coverage - but right now I feel cheated
out.

The men singles second round will begin on Friday, 27th, not on the
28th. Roger Federer is due to play on Friday - is there really not
going to be a stream?

When I subscriped to the ATP annual feed, I did it so I'd be
relaxed, knowing I could see the **entire** tournament, even if
won't be on TV, even if I won't find a FREE live stream. Nowhere did
it say ATPTV may start the broadcast only 3 days after the
tournament had started, never mind that we won't see the world
number 2 playing his second round match.

This did not happen last year, I'm paying the same amount for less
matches, I don't see how this is fair, and I fail to understand why
you don't broadcast from the first round, or at least show the
entire second round.

I don't want my money back, I just want to understand the reasoning
behind that desicion. The idea in the ATP TV is to give the fans
something that the TV channels sometimes don't, you are going
backwards instead of forwards.

Dear Or,

Thank you for contacting us.

All the information on the dates which we are covering can be found
on the website. Any missed days/matches as usually the resukt of
broadcasters having exclusive rights to show thos dates on TV.

Best Regards,

TennisTV.com - Web Support

__________________________________________________ ___

Um, as far as I know, no one has exclusive coverage to the first day matches.

Can you answer specifically, not generally? Roger Federer (as well as others) are playing their second round matches today. you aren't showing any of them.

Why?

BTW, when I buy a tournament or a yearly subscription in advance, i have no way of knowing whether you're simply deciding not to show some of the days, how am I to know what i'm paying for?

____________________________________

Dear Or,

We cannot show the earlier rounds of the Miami tournament due to broadcasting restrictions.

We are sorry that we cannot offer this as part of our service as obviously we also would like to stream earlier rounds when some of the higher profile players are on court.

Best regards

_______________________________

Thank you for the reply, I still don't understand. Broadcasting restriction? Who is broadcasting?

I mean, ESPN doesn't, Eurosport Doesn't (not British Eurosport nor international Eurosport), and Tennis channel doesn't either, I don't think they even show it on time delay

Who does? If there are broadcasting restrictions, that means someone is broadcasting - but as far as I can tell, no one is.

_____________________________________

Hi,

Thanks for contacting us,

The rights are held by different distributers, we can only show the tennis we have the rights to show. I understand it can be frustrating however we show as much tennis as we can and currently show live tennis for 42 of 52 weeks of the year.

Many Thanks

_____________________________

I appriciate your answers, but It's not so much frustration, as much as disbelief at the explanation.

Some distributor (whose name remains a mystery) bought the rights for the bottom half of the draw for the second round matches, and that's the reason why you can't show those matches, but that distributor didn't buy the rights for the top half of the draw second round matches, nor did they buy the rights for the rest of the tournament, which you are, as the website states, going to show?

I mean, forgive me for saying so, but that doesn't make a lot of sense.

**we can only show the tennis we have the rights to show.*

So, if some distributor decided to buy exclusive rights to the finals, you wouldn't be able to show it?

I tried two versions of the Replay Media Catcher (2.10 and 3.01) but without any result. :(

I have managed to record the streams using Replay Video Capture. Snags are a)you set the area of the screen to record, then it records whatever is there (don't break off to post on a message board!) and b) to keep the file a reasonable size on my rather elderly computer, I have to record just the small size screen.

Says that there will be a DVR feature in 2011, if this means all matches on demand, might be worth the $129 a year. Save me getting up ridculous times to watch streams.

I'd certainly be interested in that if it did mean proper DVR. I subbed to tennis tv in 08 to mid 09 but didn't think it was worth renewing when on bet365 you pretty much get the same matches for free.

I've sent them countless emails saying that if they want to get people onto the site and locked in, they need matches on demand. Only total obsessives like me are gonna care about watching all year round if it means some days they have to be up past 3am and at other times of the year they have to be up at 5am to see the start of play. It doesn't work. People need to be able watch when it's convenient for them - this is the entire trend in video viewing in the past 20 or 30 years now. They need to get with this.

I can deal with the 3ams what bugs me is missing most of the european clay court season because I'm at work during the day.

Exactly, a lot of sports are now offering this online, it's time tennis does as well. Hopefully it will be a DVR feature of all matches, that would be fantastic.

I find tennistv offer very tempting, only €64.95 per year and you can watch any televised court, any match you like (that's very good for watching doubles as no TV shows doubles). I decided to subscribe and hopefully the quality is good enough. Bet365 though for free has a very small screen even on my wide screen laptop and my TV which broadcasts Masters Series has idiotic commentators and doesn't air all matches.

When I am logging on to tennistv I am offered two streams of the same match - an "adaptive stream" and a "non-adaptive stream". What on earth does this mean? What is the difference?

Chair Umpire
11-22-2010, 09:28 PM
Adaptive streaming is a process that adjusts the quality of a video delivered to a web page based on changing network conditions to ensure the best possible viewer experience. Adaptive streaming is made possible by changes introduced in Microsoft Silverlight 2.

With the DVR option the devil will be in the details - what can be DVRd, when, etc...and so far there is none.

I have a subscription already so when it becomes clear what they're doing with this, I will report back.

I think they record the match on their server and then the match can be streamed like a video on youtube at anytime

So now is there any news if there will be a real DVR for Indian Wells ?

here in France, only one ADSL TV network will show Indian Wells and Miami, then I plan subscribing TennisTV but only if they propose the DVR to watch the matches which were played during the night in France.

No, not from yesterday. With the new feature you can only re-watch the matches on the same day, i.e. you can rewind the live coverage to the earlier matches as long as the coverage of the day is still on.

I paused the Soderling-Berrer game at 5:5 in the second set, came back home 9 hours later, and was able to finish watching it (though it wasn't too interesting at that point, I already knew the result). Technically, it was already a new day in IW, but the same day for me.

So I think that if you can catch the day's stream and pause it, you'll be able to see the rest of it later when you wake up... I'm definitely going to try it tonight.

Thanks for the info, Applegirl :)

Then thanks to you I finally subscribed and :

1. the quality is good, better than the free streams

2. it's possible to "pause" the matches

3. indeed this morning I could see some matches from yesterday : the same stream goes for several matches in a row (at least same court, and even different courts follow on in the same stream, like Raonic-Fish after Federer who were not on the same court), and I had started watching this stream yesterday and could start it again this morning in Europe. I had not switched off my computer between but maybe it works even if it has been switched off. Before 10.00 CET, I could even go out of this stream and then click on "watch live" to re-start it. However, after I had stopped this stream and around 10.00 CET, they switched to another day session and it was not possible to re-watch the matches from yesterday.

Today they released a new version of the iPhone App. Anyone who installed it yet and can tell if it sucks as much as the iPad App? Why I am asking?
A few days before the London tourney they already released an update for the native iPad App and what did they do? While the way they listed the single's and double's matches for the WTF looks nice it's absolutely unacceptable that for I dont know which reason they got rid of all features which include interviews & highlights of London and information about all other tournaments.
I was forced to install the iPhone App to get those back and when I tried to contact them via In App feedback button I received an error mail, since their email address seems to be incorrect. /rant
So is the iPhone App update safe or did they screw it up like the iPad App and I will lose the highlights and interviews?

Who was the old commentator tonight on tennistv and during the whole week for Dubai tournament ? (also introduced the ceremony as well)

I find him just nice and cheerful, and also I like the way he comments the important moments of the matches, stays calm but in the meantime makes you feel that it's special.

Also doesn't speak too much during the points.

I also like that he's old and remembers old memories and clearly enjoys the matches, all of the players rather than criticizing here and there, saying one should do something, whereas players clearly know better than the commentators.

Then well who was this old commentator on tennistv for Dubai tournament ?

All matches on tv courts are available for catch-up, but I find it has a hard time pulling up a match from a previous tournament so it's best to get your tennis watching done not too long after the tournament ends.
