I need your opinion... thief or not ?

I'm living in a campus.
There is a badminton court. We play frrely. We just have to book it.
Today when I arrived, there was a badminton ball on the floor.
It is better than the one I have.
So we played today with it.
At the end of the session, my partner said "let it here". I said "no i want to keep it".
He started argueing because so called, you cannot do that. It's bad, you're rude.

What would you have done ??
Let it or keep it ?

Are you sure it is a badminton court you are playing on? Is the badminton ball furry and yellow by any chance??

you definitely are not a thief, you did not steal it, just that someone left it, may be he/she did not want it and is just too lazy to put away
