Amazing choke by Canas.

Jimnik
10-09-2007, 04:40 PM
Canas had chances to go up a break in the 2nd set and more for the double break in the 3rd but JCF resisted everytime with aggressive play. The FH was definitely on today and if he keeps that up (probably won't) he can have a good indoor season.

And no-one has the right to say Canas choked serving at 5-3 in the 3rd because JCF came up with the goods. First a massive FH return finished with a touch volley and then a BH dtl which landed inches inside. He played with nothing to lose while Canas did nothing wrong.

What do you expect from a "dirtballer" playing a best of 3 sets match?

Canas' serve has improved massively this year as he showed in IW and Miami. Neither him nor JCF would call clay their favourite surface anymore.

It is plenty and as with every ace count you can double it to get the total number of unreturned serves.

Anyway I've had enough of this argument. You haven't even seen the match and you call it a choke. You sound like all the idiot gamblers who spend their day watching Live Scores.

I don't need to watch a match to know it's a choke. When you serve for the match and you lose it, unless you're playing someone waaay better than you (not this case definitely), it is a CHOKE.

This is straight up nonsensical rubbish. Every time one player breaks another player is not a choke and if it was then the non chokers would play tie break matches every time and this isn't the case.

Other than beating Roger twice, Canas did VERY little this year, and his ranking is going to plummet after IW and Miami next year.

I bet Roger is following his matches wondering how the hail that guy took a set off him, never mind beat him twice.

Well you can't expect non big servers to bang down unreturnables over and over every game and when you get outplayed you are not choking and this concpet should be simple and I don't understand where you are getting confused but clearly it's too much for you to grasp.

Ferrero can't outplay anyone these days. Maybe that's asking too much of you too.

Canas isn't Karlovic but he isn't Volandri too. Just focus on putting some decent 1st serves and hold.

Well I am glad not to be insulted or have my intelligence questioned in this post so I will reply more respectfully.

Any top 100 player including sometimes passive guys such as Ferrero can play a return game at top level and break any other player who doesn't serve big. I mean obviously Ferrero isn't going to break if Canas hits aces but it's not going to happen and when was the last time Canas served unreturnables all day long? Yes Canas has a decent serve but first serves get returned and it's not like it's Karlovic - Isner out there so returns aren't a shock. Yes, a good hold game and it should be over but sometimes that's not the way it is and this wasn't a choke in any sense of the word.

We've established the new definition of choke.

Ferrero has been outplayed by all of his opponents this year including the 30 players he beat.

It's 100% impossible, it goes completely against the laws of physics, it is a freak of nature to return decent 1st serves.

Choke. Ferrero is being beaten by guys like Seppi and Berlocq these days. Canas went on to Metz's SF and you're gonna tell me he can't make a couple of decent serves so the ball comes short and he can finish the point? Well, I doubt it.

Well at least everything is totally clear now.

Ferrero is just a grinder these days.

A decent first serve will prepare for a winner in the second ball. Maybe that's not very realistic, I don't know.

I thought the issue was done with but clearly not.

Class is permanent and JCF has it, he's a former GS champ and two time GS finalist. Even if he didn't have the class losses to bad players doesn't mean you can't string together some good tennis at times and this is what happened here and it is no choke.

Canas has done well at times this year and yes he can hit good serves but so what? Did you call it a choke when Federer returned 140 MPH bomb for a winner in the USO just because the server didn't win the point? Canas can hit first serves but sometimes that isn't enough and with a grinder like Canas who just plays consistent stuff the ebbs and flows of the game always come into play because it is down to the rising and falling level of the other player and this was never more evident than when he got outplayed by Mathieu after being up a set and double break.

I'm so happy that Juan Carlos was able to score a good win over Canas. He stayed mentally tough throughout the match and really deserves the victory.

It's not completely impossible for Ferrero to still be considered a T.M.C. contender is it? Hugely unlikely but not impossible?

If he wins Vienna and does well in Madrid and Paris...... Prolly not I suppose.

I'm so happy about this victory. And I'm even happier that JC came from behind to win it. The fact that against a quality opponent he kept his cool under pressure and came up with the goods when it counted are qualities of truly great players, and this will give JC some confidence. I thought this was the nightmare draw, it would be for any player, but I'm just so thrilled. VAMOS JC, win the tournament now!

What the hell has happened to Canas' mojo?
guy was one of the best pressure point players of the last 5 years and now he folds like a cheap tent.

He used to be a monster choker in earlier days and he doesn't fold with mistakes but there will always be the usual problem for a player like that and it is not in his hands as to whether he wins or loses. He puts the ball fairly deep with a bit of spin and runs and runs and runs, of course the occasional ace and good FH win him points by winners and he can pass okay too but basically he leaves it up to the opponent to hit him off court, when he is playing metronomically well (is that a word?) it is tough to do. When he loses rythm and starts dropping balls short he is like a bleeding fish in a sea of sharks.

Of course you already know this but it basically means that if his opponent hits the shots on thebig points the match is his, Canas can be as mentally strong as ever and lose match after match 7-6 in the third.
