I had a feeling Pippo would win this before I checked the score. I also thought to myself, "Fernando must've been playing like shit if he lost to Volandri indoors."

So he lost a set? I guess my thoughts still apply ;)

I was at the match. Gonzales made a slow start, and Volandri hit some BH beauties to get a break up. The first set was the best part of the match. Then Volandri collapsed. At the beginning of the third Volandri tried to serve and volley  , not a very successful strategy. Volandri also had treatment in the third set, but it did not look very serious.

Fernando won, but he lacked the speed and precision he showed at the end of 2006/beginning 2007. He just seemd much less sharp to me.

Thanks. Fernando has been playing sluggish tennis for most of the year now, but if he still finds a way out of these matches, it doesn't really matter. His test will come when he plays quality opponents at the YEC.

But as I've said before, I don't think Fernando is quite as fit as he has been, and when he's not in top shape, his game really suffers.

With Filippo, it is a mental problem more than anything. He started his career fine on faster surfaces, but when he lost a few bad matches, he stopped believing in his ability to do anything on those surfaces. Other players have shown what can be done with a similar playstyle indoors, Robredo could win Metz, but when it comes down to it, you need to serve well and have confidence. Pippo has neither :p
