Congrats:worship: and the season isn't even over. Health average ace per match: 20.4 per match. In the future a health Pim Pim and Isner can give him a run in the ace department.

Ferrer will next meet Croatian Ivo Karlovic, who became only the fourth player to hit 1,000 aces in a season after a 7-6(5), 7-6(6) victory over Lleyton Hewitt of Australia. Karlovic hit 25 aces - for a total of 73 aces this week - and won 91% (51/56) of points on first serve. He has now played five consecutive tie-breaks in the past two matches and improves to 33-17 this year.
The match was suspended for 10 minutes due to rain at the start of the second set tie-break. Upon the resumption of play, Hewitt squandered three set points. He hit nine aces in total and won 35 of 40 points on first serve.
The ATP started collating ace statistics as part of the RICOH ATP MatchFacts in 1991. Legendary American Pete Sampras was the first player to pass the 1,000 ace mark during the 1993 season, while Karlovic’s compatriot Goran Ivanisevic set the ATP season record of 1,477 aces in 1996.

Ivanisevic's aces in 1996 - now THAT was impressive! And I remember that - the ball was just flying like a space shuttle

yeah although Karlovic has a considerable higher # of average aces per match

than Ivanisevic (and than anyone other server)but of course Goran played

many more matches that year

The season is not over yet, may be Ivo will ace his way to winning Madrid and Paris, qualify for TMC and take that too (and the record of aces in a season).:sad:

If Karlovic would play the same games like Ivanisevic he would easily top this. 20.5 aces per game

I'm sort of surprised Ivo doesn't average even more than 20 aces a match. It seems like a slow set for him when he doesn't throw down at least 10 aces, and he has a lot of 3 set matches. I'd have thought he'd be nearer 25 a match. Just yesterday he had 19 in the 3rd set alone against Lee. I guess it's the clay court matches early in the year that bring him down.

For a guy that big is this really an achievement   ?

Legendary American Pete Sampras was the first player to pass the 1,000 ace mark during the 1993 season, while Karlovic’s compatriot Goran Ivanisevic set the ATP season record of 1,477 aces in 1996.

So, let's claculate:

Ivo is currently at 1058 aces in 50 matches averaging 21.1 aces per match
Ivo needs 419 more aces to equal Ivanišević's record
If Dr. Ivo keeps averaging 21.1 aces per match he needs about 20 matches to play to achieve that
Ivo plays max 2 more matches in Tokyo and has 5 more tournaments available to play

It is very very hard Ivo will break the record.

If he is an only serve, then he might as well be serving loads of aces:shrug:. Like Sampras said: "I only served and volleyed because that's the only thing I was good at."And he just focussed on that with some combined luck of poor racket technology and fast hardcourts (not unlike slowmania it has become) and got himself 14 slams. The only a serve notion is for people with Tunnel Vision and narrow range of thinking.

More impressive is Sampras getting past the 1000 with an average of 10 aces per match. He must have played some awful lot of tennis that year.
If Ivo can stay healthy during the whole season, he can take Goran's record. In 2005 I really thought Pim Pim was gonna do it until he injured his shoulder:sad:

Sorry dude, I thought you were insinuating that it's no surprise since he is all serve. :wavey:

Sure his height helps a lot, but the fact that he plays in an era where there are lot of excellent returners; therefore it's quite a huge achievement for who ever manages to do it.

The best first serve the game of tennis has ever seen and that is illustrated by his aces per match.

There's another thing that surprises me a lot. He uses a HEAD instinct raquet  A frame with a smaller head wouldn't be a bit more appropiate for more control, specially on groundies and returns?. He already provides tremedous power
