Well he had a long break after wimbledon but he played really well not losing a set, till the final obviously... But he seemed pretty sharp early on, I guess with him you never know how his first rounds are gonna be. I'm hoping he plays a big server in the first match though rather than a Canas type of player

Quite true. The TMC's surface was perfect for his BH last year. He has problems with the BH if the court is too fast or at least he used to in the past. It would be nice to see him do some serve and volley in Paris this year (if he plays).

Actually I think with Roger it's always a matter of height with his backhand. He hit with a lot of depth on the BH throughout the entire USO even on clay he's always played great in Hamburg where the ball doesn't bounce as high but he's never been able to do that at RG.
However I agree the MC surface is perfect for his game, in the SF and F he hit his BH as well as I've ever seen him even he was laughing with some of the shots he came up with.
As for Paris, I have tickets for the SFs so watching him serve and volley there would be a "double treat" sadly I don't think it will happen.

And comments on the betting/match fixing issues.

Federer stunned by match-fixing and gambling claims in tennis

The Associated Press
Friday, October 12, 2007

MADRID, Spain:
Roger Federer is stunned by all the talk of match-fixing and gambling in tennis.

"I'm surprised by all of these stories, shocked really that this might be happening," the top-ranked Federer told The Associated Press on Friday. "I've been around for the last 10 years and have never been approached or ever heard anything about it until these comments came out."

Andy Murray said corruption in the game was common knowledge earlier this week, but then backtracked.

"Before I make any serious comments about this I'm going to speak with Andy," said Federer, who is in Madrid for next week's Masters tournament. "I'm going to speak with the federation and all the bodies so I can get a better idea of just what exactly is going on with this right now."

ATP Player Council president Ivan Ljubicic and second-ranked Rafael Nadal have doubted Murray's claims. Nikolay Davydenko, the player at the center of the sport's biggest match-fixing scandal, criticized Murray.

Davydenko withdrew from a match in Poland in August against 87th-ranked Martin Vassallo Arguello in the third set because of a foot injury. An online betting site, in an unprecedented move, then voided bets on the match.

The ATP has said it is investigating.

"I haven't read into the whole circumstances surrounding these stories, but I will be these days," Federer said. "I hope that this isn't happening. I think I would have heard something sooner if it had been."

I hope to see Canas get by Tursunov. I want to see Federer settle that score emphatically and he has a good draw to ease him into the tourney. If he is to face Djoko or Nadal who try and grind him to death in a final he has a good early draw to get rythm with Ginepri and then maybe Canas but if it is Tursunov then that'll help him for the battles against bigger hitters in the QF/SF. Ferrer also close to him and Federer always plays good against him so I'd like to see that.

Quite honestly I could give a shit less about settling some "score" with Canas. Fed happened to run into Canas when Canas was on a "hot" streak and playing well and Fed was mentally some place else. I would love to see Roger be really aggressive the rest of the year. None of this defensive 'I can out grind you' shit.

Seriously, that match from end of 2nd through to mid 3rd set was one of the best performances from Roger on hard court recently, much better than many matches he won...I didn't know how he managed to lose it in the end...

I know this has nothing to do with Roger but someone help me understand why I should like Murray. Apparently he played the match of the year today against Chela (I didn't see it). I just cannot warm to the guy or his game. The only thing I can warm to is the he has a resonable chance of taking out Nadal in R3.

Good match~~(Roger-Ginepri)~~~
Roger looked good, moved well, served great and did just what he had to do to win. THe match seemed to be a crowd pleaser~~some nice playing on both sides.

Ginepri played his heart out~~~~~some really fun rallys,
but in the second set Roger went up a gear, and brought it home.

There was some very good shot making.
I enjoyed the match.

Roger looked so fine in some shorts I can finally like, skimming the upper part of the knee and not ballooning in the wind, just tight~~tailored enough.

Even as a Brit I understand where you're coming from. However, whatever my personal feelings are towards Jock Boy and the way he acts up, I have to say that after watching his match yesterday and tonight, if he can keep himself together and stop acting like a jerk, and play the way he has in his last 2 matches .. I won't be able to stop myself becoming a fan! And playing at this level and keeping his self belief, he has a real chance to take Nadal out.

Obvious things aside (very good bh, return, fast and easy movement), Murray has the ability to anticipate, constract the point, mix power with junk balls. He is a chess player on the court.

He was supposed to wear the body map polo top at the US Open and never did.

Just read somewhere in GM where the "transitional king" will not win this tournament. I've heard it before, but this time it just struck me as extra funny. May he be the "transitional king" for a good deal longer and win this tournament (a beat down of Canas would be nice, too).

Like I said in GM, he'll take it 6-0, 6-0, in record time and Canas will go back to making excuses.

Lets be realistic ;)

It will be a difficult match for Roger considering the fact that he has to play against a player who has beaten him twice in a row. When was the last time he lost to a player not named Nadal back to back?

Canas will go into this match with some selfconfidence. I don't think Roger had sleepless nights because of his two losses to him earlier this year but it will surely be in his mind.

Nevertheless it's a completely new match in different surroundings. Lets hope for a good performance from Roger. Good luck :)

If Roger just plays a good match he should win in two routine sets. Honestly, Canas has nothing to hurt him with. All he can really do is run balls down. People talk about his serve but Roger seemed to return it well in Miami. It's just that he was playing out of his ass in that match. If he loses tomorrow I'll probably laugh.

I didn't expect this thrashing. I expected the result but I also expected Roger to struggle in the 1st set. It was a combination of Roger playing well and Canas not playing so well. Roger was essentially overpowering Canas through most of the match and Canas was having trouble getting the ball deep into the court. It was either a UE or too short. He troubled Roger in IW and Miami by keeping the ball deep even when he was out of position and waiting for Roger to commit the UE. That didn't happen today.

NYCtennisfan
10-18-2007, 04:29 PM
I hope this puts to rest some of the silly comments you hear about 'grinders' bothering Federer. Only Nadal truly bothers Federer now, Nalbandian when he is on, Murray soon enough, and Djoko's steadiness. Ferrer, Canas, and the like stand NO chance against Federer if he is hitting his shots. In the 2nd set of Miami and the first half of the 3rd, Federer made Canas look like a challenger before somehow failing to break for a 2nd time against a tired Canas then getting broken himself.

The court is a lot slower in Miami so it's easier to do what Canas did there and on top of that, Federer's FH was not nearly as penetrating or precise.

Canas was doing that in IW too. Another thing is that Fed was able to read Canas' serve a lot better today than he did in IW or Miami. That made the difference as well.

Someone on Roger's website posted this tidbit about his on-court interview after the Ginepri match:

However, yesterday he just really asked Roger how he was feeling to be back on court and Roger said he felt he had played well altho he could have played better and that he enjoyed being back in Madrid and hoped to do well again this year... Then they had a bit of a giggle because apparently the night before Roger+Mirka, Tommy Haas+girlfriend and Carlos Moya were all having dinner at a very famous restaurant in Madrid (Casa Lucio) then Alex arrived and Roger couldn't get over the fact that at 9pm there was absolutely NOBODY THERE!!! He said that in Switzerland or US it would normally have been full at that time... so they pulled his leg about eating early and getting enough sleep when here in Spain people eat late and enjoy themselves until late into the night... But Roger was very happy because he'd managed to get Carlos Moya to pay the bill for dinner - I think there's a joke amongst the players about Carlos (not) paying for things!!! And that was all really.

i loved that. Hewitt always used to bring it up pre-match and derive confidence from that match. Always got smashed right after.

Anyways, this shows imo what happens when federer plays without outside interference. No wind, sun etc. The conditions stay relatively constant and fed gets in a groove and decimates other players.

When federer plays outside in conditions that can be variable, he tends to be conservative in his play. Think to cincy and usopen where he was passive and wasnt feeling the conditions too well.

right now, federer is far and away the best indoors, and his level indicates that he could be among the best of all time indoors if he plays like this.

In his post match interview Roger said his game plan was to play offensive, more aggressive style. I would love to see him play like this more often. Moving well, vollying well, great transition game....it's just a joy to watch. I'll take that any day over the junkballing/moonballing and defensive crap some we see with some guys.

He certainly did play aggressively. He's been content to hit soft FH's to his opponents' FH's from the middle of the cout of late, but today, he attcked with that shot. His FH combos reminded me of his aggressive FH's of 2004, early 2005. His BH was also very good as he didn't offer up too many short balls off of the CC drive and his drive DTL was better than it has been during he summer.

Canas served a lot to the Fed FH on the AD court for some reason, something that most players hardly ever do (other than Blake who doesn't seem to have much of a gameplan when serving) and Fed's FH return from the AD end is really good as he tries to set up the return to the AD corner, FH to the opponent's FH, inside out FH or volley winner combination. He had some nice BH drive returns as well.

He looked quite good against Canas, more agressive than I've seen for most of the year, but I think we're selling him short if we think he's just now beginning to play well now again. He played several strong matches at the US Open, most notably against Capdeville, Lopez, and Roddick. In each match, he had 40+ winners and ~15 errors. More noticeable, though, is the variety in his game and the way he approached the matches on the two different surfaces. At Madrid, he's hitting with more power and less spin, winners io and dtl blowing by opponents. At the USO, Roddick was hitting as hard as he could from the ground, and Federer was still controlling rallies by spinning it all over the court, forcing Roddick to deal with incredible variety. Once he got a chance to step around the forehand, he was doing things similar to today. I think his match against Roddick was as good as the one with Canas today, especially as Roddick was playing a lot better than Canas was.

Strangely enough Roger's next opponent also discovered his BH  in yesterday's match against Koubek. Together with some amazing FHs and excellent serving, this was quite a performance. I think it could be quite tough tonight. I was at their quarterfinal in Madrid 4 years ago, and it was very tight. Feli gets a huge amount of support from the crowd as he's near enough a local boy. Still, Roger should be able to deal with that, but mentally the Nadal loss might affect him as he doesn't need to do so much to retain number one now.

You would think Nadal's loss would spur Roger on to win this event to increase the gap. He got a scare from Feli at the US Open so I don't think he'll take this match lightly. At least I hope not.

I certainly don't expect this match to be a beat down, but then I didn't expect that one to either. But of course Lopez can bother Roger more on this surface than Canas can.

Yes, Lalo is serving very well - Roger just can't seem to break it.
Fortunately Roger is holding his own serve very easily so I expect him to be able to win this match in two - perhaps through a second TB.

Credits to LaLo, though - he's really become a player to reckon with, especially on HC.

Was that 1/10 or 1/11 on BP conversions? :o I guess it could be worse, we haven't seen Roger play a dumb service game (yet).

Personally I think Roger played a fairly good match. 10 Break points is hard to swallow, but LaLo served really well on those breaks. Lalo's serve kept this match close.

Yes, it was mostly good service from Lalo to fend Roger off than Roger making dumb mistakes, one or two, one dump into the net, several over-hits, but it's a lefty serve, so.

Absolutely true. Roger didn't just blow these BP, but it was rather Feli defending them very well indeed. Both of them played a good match - and Lalo is obviously becoming a lot better lately! :yeah - but in the end an expected win from the better player.

Well done, Rogelio, come on grab that title now. You're the only one left for me to root for. :p

FLo's serve to the AD court saved him so many times on BP down. It's a LOT harder to win points returning from the AD side if you are facing a lefty than from the deuce court. Federer hasn't been broken yet this tournament which is always a good sign, even if he did play Ginepri and Lopez as two of his opponents.

 Yeah, Nalby is most definitely Bandwagon player of the Month! But well, eh, happens to everyone who manages to beat (or in this case, I'd rather say 'destruct') either Raf or Rogi. I wonder how much time it'll take for Djoko to share in that 'pleasure' as well.

I am not worried about Nalbandian. I have not seen him against Nadal, but against Djokovic, there was nothing special. Djokovic was dead-tired and not impressive at all. David did not have to do much to beat him.

Convincing on his own serve, but like yesterday not great in converting breakpoints. it must be 1/5-6 now. Kiefer is playing well though, hitting nice winners himself, particularly at the net.

Thanks, I got me a working livestream now :D - Roger is playing well enough, but indeed seems to have trouble converting his BPs. I guess that is for a good deal caused by Kiefer's good playing. Not unlike yesterday with LaLo.

Question will be (hopefully!): will he be good enough to defeat Nalby as well? I think he will.

:yeah: Final, Roger!

Excellent timing for the break 2-12  and it's great to hear that again he is utterly dominant on serve - 10 points lost on serve, 3 lost on first serve.

Honestly, Kiefer played great on most of those break points, often he hit a huge first serve, Federer was barely able to return it and then Kiefer would hit the winner... He blew some, but Kiefer saved a lot of those by himself..

yep. Given federer's terrible bp conversion against many players, it is mind boggling to see where most players "bend over and take it" from federer.

kiefer played like a spartan. Brave but not enough firepower in the end.

Feli played with passion against Fed in this tournament as he did at the USO. Roddick played with passion and determination at the USO. Misha played with incredible determination in Dubai against him. It's amazing how there are so many talented players out there who go out with nothing to lose, swing freely, and cannot beat Federer. It's truly a testament to his greatness.

As I mentioned earlier, he loves this court as it suits his game perfectly. He's going to have to play well tomorrow because Nalbandian is always a threat. Nalbandian's inside-out BH, CC Fh, and BH DTL pose problems for Feds if his movement is off. Should be a good one!

Not quite yet, but very, very close.

As it stands, Feds leads Nadal by 204 points. If he wins the tourny, he leads by 234 points.

Fed needs to lead by more than 150 points going into the TMC to secure the #1 title.

At this point, If Feds didn't play Basel and Nadal won Bercy, Fed would be up 134 points going into the TMC (if he wins Madrid) meaning that Nadal would have to go 5-0 and Federer would have to go 0-3 for Nadal to reach #1.

If Feds wins Madrid and reaches the SF's of Basel (22 race points), he clinches #1.

If Feds loses the final tommorrow, but wins BAsel, he secures #1.

Although I haven't seen the match against David I think it is highly unlikely that he tanked. He had played a bunch of matches lately and was probably a bit tired.

I haven't seen Rogers match against Kiwi, but judging from the comments Nicolas played a good match as usual against Roger.

Who would have thought before the tournament that David Nalbandian would be Rogers opponent in the final? It's good to see David back in form. I like to watch him play. When he is "on" he is one of the most dangerous players out there.

Lets hope for a good match between Roger and him and that we get to see some champagne spraying afterwards ;)

I don't think he tanked..........especially since he is the self appointed no. 1. He isn't afraid of Roger. Not to mention, he wouldn't tank in front of his loony parents.
