Laver vs Sampras, who is greater?

I think Laver.

He may have three Slams, but he proved himself at each Slam, winning the Grand Slam twice!

No one has ever done, and no one will probably ever do that again.

do we really need to go here?

comparing great players from completely different eras is far more complicated than just saying "Laver did this, and Sampras didn't".

As much as i didn't like Sampras it's pretty tough to say he's not greater than Laver based pretty much from results on clay. The reality is that in the 60s and early 70s there really was such a thing a "clay courter" as we know them today and it was much easier for players with a traditional style of play to adjust to it.

Having said that Sampras' game was based around his serve and there's no doubt that it would have been far less effective using the equipment that Laver's generation played with.

It basically requires a thesis to come to any kind of meaningful conclusions.

sampras won his matches without trying. if only pete cared more about winning on clay, he would be the GOAT. Laver's era was a clown era.

I've never seen Laver play, and have only read about him and his achievements. I do think that his achievements are more impressive than Pete's. Unlike Pete, Laver doesn't appear to have a major blemish on his CV, as he regularly won the biggest tournaments available to him on carpet, clay, grass and hard.

If Sampras was not interested in winning on clay, why did he show up at Roland Garros thirteen times?

Laver was far more versatile and dominant than Sampras ever was.

Another legendary tennis-myth, along with his "better than most player's 1st serve" second serve: Pete doesn't try...
Sampras lost so many matches, not because he's not trying. He lost them because he is very vulnerable.
When his serve is not working, he is very beatable. When his opponents have a great day, he is beatable, especially in 3-set matches, in which it's easier for his opponents to sustain their level.

I mean look at his 1998 year end results. In order to capture the year end nr.1 position, he was trying his hardest to win , yet he was still beaten by clowns.:haha:

Well, I don't think the game in the 1960s was as tough as it is today. On the other hand, Pete sucked the big one on clay. I also think Laver would have got more than 14 Slams if he'd had the chance. So on that basis I'll vote Laver.
