Will Monfils ever win the french?

Apparently, he thinks so.
Nadal is the best at the moment. But I also know that I'm capable of winning Roland Garros. It's not a race. Federer won his first Grand Slam at the age of 23. Noah as well. Each to their own.

Why not? He is still young, he can improve the technical side of his tennis, he already is very athletic and most important, he won't collapse in front of a homecrowd, quite the contrary, so yes, I think it is not as absurd as it may sound right now.

Monfils  Fed won his first Slam a month before he turned 22, making him 21 not 23.

I don't think he'll win the French, but who knows. When did he say that?

I don't think he'll win the French, but who knows. When did he say that?G. Suburbia is quoting this:
http://www.atptennis.com/1/en/2007news/monfils_sport.asp

But he says that in *every* interview, he says all the time his goal is to win a GS and he thinks he can do it.

And everytime he says it, you've got the same people reacting exactly the same way on MTF, lol. "Groundhog Day" feeling.

I think first Gael needs to win a major tournament - a masters and reach a quarter final of a slam first. He should set himself easy reachable goals.

Last year he said the same thing about winning one GS this year.

But, who knows?! He might fall down into the rabbit-hole, attend a mad tea party and win the Wonderland Open.

dumb MTF retards at their finest.

so monfils thinks he can win RG one day. Criticizing him because he believes in himself.

what is he supposed to say?

Monfils: "Im a mug and i will never win a GS in my life"

Nothing wrong with him believing in himself. But it is not the 1st time he says he will win big and ends up having a disappointing season. And wasnt him bitching about the comparissions with him and Djoko, since they are roughly at the same age?!

If it was Djoko saying: "I will win one GS" than I wouldnt be bashing on the guy ...

what's the point of anyone ever setting reachable goals?

I mean I get your point that Monfils' alleged goals are utterly ridiculous, but it's still better than setting goals that are 100% guaranteed to be attained. No accomplishment, no satisfaction.

As for the question at hand, no, he won't ever win the French nor any other Grand Slam. He has good talent, but not enough to overcome other factors (ie, durability, mental game, strength of other young players) necessary to win a GS title.

But I also know that I'm capable of winning Roland Garros

capable being the operative word.

he isnt saying he WILL win. he is saying he believes at some stage of his career, he CAN win.

Djokovic set the goal to get into the Masters at the end of the year meaning he wanted to break at least the top 8. He's done it. Setting goals, attaining them, and then setting new goals is the way to go instead of setting goals that are too high and disappointing yourself.

Nothing wrong with Monfils saying this, though, at least he believes he can do it :/

It is nice to see he has confidence in himself. He certainly has the potential to do it, he just has to develop more consistency before that happens though.

No. His style is too wild and erratic. I don't think he'll improve technically enough to win a GS.

lol this guy is so cocky that he makes me laugh. He thinks he's the best just because he won alot of junior grandslams. If i play him in future and beat him i won't even hand shake him. And if he doesn't win one grandslam in future he must eat his words. that'll be best.

Sorry. It is that last year he said he would win a GS this year. I have antibodies already formed against Monfils'declarations. He is capable of winning, as most top 50 players are. However, IMO, it is highly unlikely.

I just dont see anything special on his game. To me, from the guys around his age, he is the least likely to win a GS. I can even see Murray winning a GS before him. Specially on clay, because he goes for broke too often, and usually gets burned.
