he saved MP as well. I hope Nalbandian defeats him. I don't want him to make a big run here in RG this year.

My God that was torture ones again! He makes it harder each time. Cruel.
Starace served 80+ % of first serve! best serve in tourney. Amazing.
MArat I love you!
I don't care that you stopped the game in 4th set, defending the match point ! I don't care! i understand such actiuons now! You deserved to win anyway.

Marat make it easier :tape:

he doesnt know the meaning

he'll probably beat Nalby, Guga and Hewitt in 5 sets

then when it comes to final after shagging 100 women the night before :o
he'll come out with "i was tired"

Chloe le Bopper

Or maybe instead of being "tired" he'll call lots of injury timeouts for "cramps" and "blisters"? ;)

Marat, you really have to take this to 2 match points? :tape:

Oh, boy, do you know how to play tennis in 3 sets?? :tape:

Ok, he did something wrong on match point??

Marat always tortures his fans. I should know. The whole time he was playing Mantilla, I was at work with that IBM scoreboard in the upper left corner of my desktop. I was on the edge of my seat to see if he'd come back. He just never makes it easy on himself, does he?

As usual, he makes life difficult for himself. But for once I'd like to see him go through one match without calling a time-out for cramps, blisters, headaches, and whatever else suddenly ails him. :o

Shagging 100 women  He's not even shagging the one he's got. Something to do with the long hair and goatee and "luck".

Don't you know dropping his shorts was a Freudian slip?

May the best man win. That is to say, David beat his sorry ass in straight sets and let's see the last of Marat the Prat.

oh, but it's okay for Safin to do it. It's when Coria and Robredo do it that it's "lowclass" and "cheating" :)

Coria, naturally. Costa or David in the top half. I would be cool with Gaudio out of the top half too, but I'm not making a point of rooting for him.

I'd root for Robredo too, but I know that he just has no hope of beating Moya and Coria ;)

Man.. I might die one day watching a match like this. Why does he always have to take the hard way? ;)
Great win Marat! :worship:

Hope he doesn't collapse in his next match.. a guy can only have so much...

Chloe le Bopper

No worries, if he collapses he'll just take a timeout as a refresher. Has he been spending time with Robredo?

I'll post this here too

I saw the end of the 4th set. Marat indeed did have blisters on his hand, but his time out was obviously to regroup. The crowd didn't appreciate it at all. After saving a mp it was if I recall correctly. He just walked up to the umpire and talked to him. When Starace figured that it would take some time he walked up to the net and Marat showed him his hand.

Marat also questioned line calls in unfortunate moments for Starace and the crowd was really against him.

I saw the end of the fifth and indeed they were booing. He did wave to the crowd for a few seconds, but walked back to his chair when he figured it was him that they were booing.

This Starace has power and good placement and made Marat run for his money.

I did get the impression though that he's becoming more of a thinker on court. He seems to have a strategy. He was VERY confident on one of Starace's matchpoints and hit an amazing passing shot. I almost had a heart attack.

I wonder whether he doesn't want to peak early or simply sucks. I hope it's not the latter.

Maratski, you crazy Russian!

I am SICK of all this timeout crap... if you ask me, it's the wimpy umps or the stupid rules, not the players... it's up to the ump to make a ruling... and some of them don't for whatever stupid reason, i.e., intimidation.

Anyway, Marat, don't go 5 sets again, pls... I want excitement but not THAT much... it'll be enough just having you and Nalby go at each other... s be interesante!!

Marat not only tortures his fans and his opponents, but he is tortured himself... that's why I love him!

The epidemy of players calling injury times out when their opponents are serving for match continues.

I dont think Ill be able to cheer for him again.

Well, David doesn't make it easy for us either. We'll have to wait and see who's focused on monday. Knowing how both of them are playing, I'm sure they'll break Santoro's record! LOL

Congrats to Marat on another memorable and courageous win! :D I don't want to hear anyone question Safin's heart anymore. And the touchy French crowd which is the worst tennis crowd in the world booing Safin who is the most exciting player in tennis and the most enjoyable character in tennis is appalling! Safin has a reputation as a very good sport and he's earned that reputation. It's entirely possible that one of his blisters burst causing him to take that injury timeout. I just hope he can regroup for monday and his match against David Nalbandian. Safin is the clear underdog in that match. But I hope he plays well and gives himself a chance to win.

Udachi Marat! :bigclap:

Maybe so, but pre-empting umpire's calls and things like that, I don't see any possible excuse for. If he's earned that reputation and is so concerned with it or proud of it, then he should not do things such as this, eh? It's pretty difficult to believe that he didn't know he was playing an extremely inexperienced guy and that calling medical timeouts and doing things like that on close calls would rattle him. Maybe it's "within the rules" but that doesn't make it right.

Does he really have to play 5 sets in every match? I mean, who was that guy? An Italian qualifier! Marat has just arrived in the round of last 16. We saw in Australia what happened to him in the final... He has to play more effectively and win easier and faster!

bunk, I hope this incident is just a one time issue for Marat. I don't want on court behaviour issues to become commonplace for him.

Well said GermanBoy. Safin has lost grand slams in the first week of that grand slam tournament and not just in the final. And the 2004 Australian Open is proof of that.

I did hear that Starace was in tears after the match. Everyone keeps calling him a kid, but he's like, just a year younger than Safin.

I heard somewhere that John McEnroe saw Safin's blistered hands on cam and agreed with Safin's decision. Being as neutural as possible, having to deal with 8 blisters at matchpoint is really not fair for Safin if he did not ask for treatment. Like he has said, he has fought for over 4 hrs and to lose the match due to his blisters is not really fair.
