You tell them, Marat!

There was hillarious mini-interview with Safin on Russian TV today (well, it was taken on Sunday but they showed it today).
Marat was asked what he thought about Davydenko's words. (After his loss Davydenko said that it was very difficult for him to switch from Beijing hardcourts to clay and that clay court was chosen only because of Safin).
Safin said (well, it's not the exact quote but more or less close to what he said):

It's not a secret he [Davydenko] likes money so maybe it's part of the problem.
And choosing clay court was the whole team's decision, I was ready to play on any surface. Of course, he was frustrated after the loss and preferred to blame other person rather than himself... But you know what, if it's so important, ok, you can blame me. I'm ready to be blamed for everything as long as it helps our team win.

Well said, Marat.

Davy is a cretin and hopefully will be banned from tennis.

Seriously, he's not that good on clay anymore since he doesn't like the long rallies. Funny interview though :p

Marat on clay has always been somewhat overrated. But pick it for Andreev if nothing else - he is a godsend to that team to give them depth on clay.

I'm surprised Davydenko still turns out for Russia - it doesn't seem like he's integrated into the team and there's all this talk of him trying to get into Austria. Appearance money perhaps?

Seriously, he is not the most integrated in the team I guess so maybe Shamil T. could really leave himout of the team for the final. Igor should be in the team even on fast carpet, he deserves it for all the matches he's won for them on clay.

Then he should understand that whatever he was "READY" to do is totally irrelevant, because he failed to deliver on his readiness and his promises. And be respectful and thankful to guys from a winning team who did the job, his job.

Looks to me like Davydenko was the one who failed to deliver. And he should probably stop whining about the clay since a) Russia won and b) it was Andreev who won it for them. Not him.

Is that why Marat doesn't like Davydenko? Or are there deeper issues?

it's hardly the reason...
The reason probably is Davydenko himself. He sounded bitter after last year Davis Cup final when all the attention was to Marat who clinched the tie. But it's knid of normal as Marat is a celebrity in Russia while Davydenko is virtually unknown.

Marat actually has defended Davydenko.
He's been the one insisting Davydenko has a personality and is actually funny.

This is the funny thing, Davydenko avoided the summer hard court season at all cost until he had to play Montreal, and now he's complaining about getting back on the clay?

I don't think Marat cares about a surface but obviously Davydenko is a better clay courter than Marat, so for him to say that the surface was put on because of Marat is :weirdo:.

If Chakvetadze and Sharapova can get along, these 2 have no problem.

Marat beat Andy in three on clay in the semi last year - so he can't be that bad on clay. I mean, he was on fire and handled his business.

Looks to me like Davydenko was the one who failed to deliver. And he should probably stop whining about the clay since a) Russia won and b) it was Andreev who won it for them. Not him.

Things in tennis are not to be taken at face value. Davydenko played sick and injured and yet managed to make huge battle out of it and , in reality, it was Davydenko's tough loss that won the tie for Russians as Kohlshreiber was dead meat after the second set against Andreev, and it is obvious why. Only tennis ignoramuses can deny Davydenko's crucial contribution to this victory. I wrote it already after that match that it won the tie for Russia, as while not bringing Russian a poitn, it did manage to expose a crucial problem of German team - lack of depth.

And Safin's twists and turns lately don't relly make me sympathetic. "I have injured wrist. I need 6 weeks break for it to heal. I climb Cho Oyu. My season is over". "I don't climb Cho Oyu. My wrist is fine. I'll play Madrid". Some of that are just funny changes of mind. Otherwise do pssibly qualify as plain lies. As it all did translate into some problems for Team Russia, I am hardly sympathetic.

And just to make things clear. Marat Safin is my favourite player, and any poster who is longer than an year or two on these boards would tell you so, and I don't really like Davydenko. But those things are beyond the concept of being fair and objective.

Regardless of the status of your being a fan, you seem overly worked up. Safin is a vital part of the Davis Cup team but he is not the team. He's a bit crazy and has made some odd decisions but that's nothing new. Russia won the SF and that's the important thing.
