Well done Lucho !!!!!!!! He was serving for match at 5-4 but he choked and lost his serve at 0. But he fought on and won the tie break.

I'm really happy for this result. These guys really deserve it.

Well done Lucho on winning the biggest match of his career and leading Peru into the World Group for the 1st time in their history. Yzaga, Chino Miranda and Lucho have been together struggling for ages and they have achieved their goal of making the WG.

Lucho had lots of break points and was up a break in the 3rd set and lost it. Max isn't in the form at the moment, but he is still a tough opponent for Horna, though if Lucho couldn't beat him on clay at home, then he never would.

Lucho served for the match at 5-4 and lost it to 0.

Belarus had a good run in the World Group, but they have Ignatik who has good potential.

Awful performance to close an awful weekend. Total and complete embarassment. When Voltchkov is playing better than you on clay it means something.
Whatever is your problem Max, solve it or retire.

Watch Peru get humiliated next year by any other team in the WG.

I've seen him this year only a couple times but what I saw from him on the baseline is completely pathetic :help: He is playing on the baseline now so weak as Wayne Arthurs at the beginning of career :tape:

Yeah, he's totally out of form and I doubt that he can beat a player who's ranked outside the top 500 at the moment. The worst thing is that he didn't even look that badly at the start of the year but it suddenly went downhill. A 0-4 singles record in DC play this year is very telling if you ask me.

Well look at the alternatives:

BLR - Mirnyi, Voltchkov getting old, soon will have no top 100 players.

SUI - Federer won't play leaving Stan and players outside the top 200.

AUS - Hewitt declining, Gooch and Luczak barely inside top 100.

CRO - Ljubicic won't play, Karlovic won't play, Ancic always injured.

ROU - were there last year too.

At least Britain and Israel have Murray and Sela on the up and good doubles players. Korea has an in-form top 50 player and Peru is about the same level as Belarus.

You're joking around, right? Just because they got a fluke win (and almost blew it) doesn't mean they'll ever win a WG tie.

Probably not but in terms of rankings their players are higher than Belarus. The doubles is the biggest difference, Peru doesn't have the team that Belarus has.

But under the right circumstances they could possibly upset Belgium, Sweden or even USA (without Roddick) at home.

Never. USA at home? Horna the "hero" lost to Querrey and Delic this year on clay. Sweden could bring Vinciguerra and still win and Belgium could field even Norman and Chris Rochus to win.

Well it's a question of whether Horna and Miranda can raise their game in front of their home support the way Mirnyi and Voltchkov have.

I'm not saying they're going to reach the Davis Cup semi-final next year, I just think right now with Mirnyi and Voltchkov declining they're probably on the same level. Obviously they're not as good as Belarus use to be.

Not really. With the exception of the first match, the last two were sort of close. This year at Australia, it took 5 sets for Max getting through. So, playing on clay in front of a partisian crowd might had done the trick of tipping the scale to Lucho's side.

Anyway. I dont get why you are so mad at Max. When was his last singles title?!

As a fan of Max, myself, I think it looks horribly like he is finished mate (not that you haven't worked that out, I guess). He hasn't even played a full singles schedule this year.

But as concerns this tie...losing to Horna isn't really something to be concerned about (although Lucho was carrying a back injury). Never seen Miranda play so I can't comment on that one.

Yeah I was hoping he'd beat Miranda on Friday, but that match definitely had upset potential. Max now on an 11-match losing streak on clay.  Even Becker and Tursunov are better than that. :o

Well it's a tough situation for Belarus, but they had a great run in the WG with the 2 man team and very fast Minsk ice rink.

It's not easy for small nations and taking part is good enough, but most people don't get this.

Lucho's after match interview was interesting.

When you carry a winning H2H against a player who lost - this year - to Querrey and Delic on clay, you have to at least be close to winning at some point of the match, be it on clay, ice, mud, terracotta or quicksand.

Anyone with a reasonable sense expected this tie to be 1-1 after Day 1 and not 2-0 to Peru. Yes, Max has been poor this year, even then I didn't expect Chino to beat him.

Lucho did win the last match they played on clay easily though. Their AO match was a very good.

Like I said Lucho playing on clay and at home, these circumstances were in his favour. Horna can lose to anyone, you know that and he can play well when it's not expected.

I don't like to say this but it certainly looks that way. It's not only his baseline game that is giving him problems, it's his serve. He hasn't been hitting many aces this year but he regularly hits over 10 dfs per match.
