Tarpischev....he's got all the connections if you know what I mean. He controls everything - like some autocratic ruler. It usually bodes well for his teams, but apparently this week he made a deal to bring the USA down, so he's gotta let Germany win.

Very good question. Is it the captain that makes some intelligent and, sometimes, surprising selections, from four good players, or is it the one that makes the most of a couple of decent players in his squad?

Certainly over the last year, I'd give the nod to Tarpischev, although I'd probably be biased in saying that John Lloyd has been a solid captain for the last year (even if all 3 ties were in our favour) and hasn't put a single foot wrong in his squad selections and weekend combinations. :p :yeah:

It would be wrong of me to pick someone purely because they aren't Newcombe, right?

Is it Newcombe or Fitzgerald? Or is the question in terms of 'ever'?

Shamil.

And I'd agree with the guy who also said John Lloyd, I hate his commentary but he hasn't made a mistake yet. Made all the correct decisions and seems to connect well with the GBR team. There has only been a few ties but still, things are looking rather optimistic.

I love the way Forget acts as DC coach (so emotional), so I'd have to say that he's my favorite. That, of course, doesn't say anything about how well he actually is doing the job. And I know that many french fans hate him with a passion. :D

Kuehnen should have been in the poll alone for the fact that Germany made the SF. :)

Nominating Behrend over Kiefer in singles is a reason not to include him in the poll.

Agree that Forget is one of the best.

Tarpischev has the best team behind him. No big deal. Anyone could do that. Hard to believe he's a good captain as calm as he is.

Hans Gil-The-Master-Of-Disaster... seriously, Tarpischev. But he also has more choices than any other captain, so that's a huge advantage.

Bullshit, he lost against Argentina.

The Best Davis Cup captain is Alberto Mancini.

I still remember tha laughter of Fitzgerald when he saw the palyers that Mancini had chosen for the doubles match, but finally Luli laughed last and better.

I would chose Kuehnen for 2007. Germany definately overachieved this year and if Haas wasn't ill Germany would have won this years Davis Cup.

btw it sucks to be one year older. can i get younger? ;)

Hard to believe he's a good captain as calm as he is.I agree, he is forced to make more decisions than many of the captains, so by definition he will look good. But he has taken some risks over the past couple years, making some surprising decisions that ended up working very well, so for that he deserves a lot of credit.

Tarpischev has a tough job as Russia isn't exactly a team with few options. He has to know who to put on court. It's not like the USA, where any normal person would choose Roddick + Blake + Bryans.

Play-Offs 2003 and he also picked clay although Kiefer owns Mirnyi on hardcourt and also Schuettler owned players like Mirnyi in 2003 on hardcourt.

The Belarus and Slovakian captains from their runs to the semis and final, got the best out of a limited group of players.

Anyone but Newcombe. Jordi Arresse sucks too.
