About 20000 souls in Belgrade Arena, watching Tipsarevic-Hewitt. :wavey:
Some amazing points on both sides.

There are about 4,000 on the stands. Pretty big audience for Fixer vs Kohlschreiber match

Typical Russian fans. Who needs to spend money on a ticket when you've got a perfectly good TV at home?

All for a measly WG play-off. The Brits sure know how to show their support. :yeah:

Russians aren't in front of a tv. They're out partying. You're thinking of Canadians - they're in front of the tv. Watching hockey.

what is it with canadians and hockey?

It's an obssession, even worse than most other countries' preoccupation with bigger sports, because it's the only one Canadians in general are more than competent at. (Well, curling too I suppose, but it's only big news for about a month or two of the year). When I was studying in the US I used to hate the jingoistic nature of so much sports coverage there, especially during international events like the Olympics, but none of it even came close to the flag waving or hand wringing that accompanies every Team Canada win or loss on the ice. I've actually become quite a fan but even I was less than thrilled when some of this year's USO matches were preempted on TV for some meaningless showdowns in a Canada-Russia junior hockey eight-game series that was meant to be some sort of nostalgic throwback to a previous Cold War era version

Yes, I'm sure ;) The cheapest ticket's price is 100 roubles ($1 = 25 roubles) but of course your seat will be on the balcony (not sure if it's proper word in English)

for comparison: you could buy 5 litres of petrol/gasoline for $4.

Come on, it was the farewell of their best player in what, 50 years? It could have been a Group 2 tie and they'd still fill the stadium.
The Russians... well, too used to success as of late?

whoa. Is 100 rubles a lot for most russians? That exchage rate is pretty ridiculous.

Irrelevant. I guarantee you next year same time same place you would get the same attendance.

Do you think Russia would fill the stadium of a WG play-off if Safin were playing his last match? I have my doubts. And anyway, tickets for this tie were sold long before Henman's announcement and no-one knew he would be playing doubles today.
