Who will end up the Greater Rival for Federer and Sampras?

Considering the achievements of both players, the quality and skill of their games, their h-h with these two GOAT level players and any other intangibles you wish to include.

Nadal isn't finished yet. So some of this is speculation

Reasons would be appreciated.:)

Comparing Nadal with Agassi is too early. I mean Nadal won 3 FOs. Agassi is the only player in open era who won a carrier grand slam. Agassi is a legend on his own terms, Nadal is not (or not yet).

after sampras, we all thought that no one would surpass his achievements and that his records will stand for a long time... little did we know that after only 2 years, federer stepped it up and is now on the verge of erasing pete...

question is, if fed already retired will there be another player who would come out of nowhere to make his mark as the next candidate for GOAT? or is fed's success once in a lifetime only?

As much as I respect the rivalry between Agassi and Sampras I choose Nadal for obvious reasons. He is the player who stands in the way for Roger to become the so-called GOAT right now. On the other hand Rogers achievements prevent Rafa from being the first player since Borg to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon back to back, not to forget to be No. 1. Rafa is the player who is the longest No. 2 in the history of tennis and has more points as previous players who were No. 1.

Andre and Pete never prevented each other from reaching what the other player already had achieved.

Agassi never owned Pete the way Nadal owns Federer.

In fact it was the other way around, certainly in the big moments.

Also, Agassi never had a mental edge over Pete, and that's not true about Rafa and Roger.

NO, he can not, and the fact that he beats him there every year makes it a rivalry, damn if Roger started winning there too.:help:

It's not like it's guaranteed that if Federer is not facing Nadal in the French final he is going to win it. He still has to defeat whoever comes through that side.

It's like saying that without Federer, Roddick would have had 4 slams by now.

I think the ownage is a little bit over hyped. Nadal owns Fed on clay. That's it. It's made out to be more than that by most people just because the overall is 8-5.

The fact is that Fed leads Nadal 4-2 on non-clay surfaces. This includes the last 3 as well as 4 of the last 5.

Here's the H2H by surface:

-------------Sampras vs. Agassi--------Federer vs. Nadal
Clay---------2----------3-----------------1---------6
Carpet-------5----------2-----------------0---------0
Grass--------2--------- 0-----------------2---------0
Hard--------11---------9-----------------2---------2

Total--------20--------14-----------------5---------8

Make of it what you will, and I understand that the Nadal-Federer rivalry is not over, but I think if you take how far each of the pair are from each other on each surface, Nadal has an advantage over agassi in being a more successful rival, at least from these numbers.

On grass, I'd say that the dominance of Roger over Nadal is not as strong as the dominance of Pete over Andre. Nadal has only won 1 more set from Federer than Andre did from Pete, but judging from the fact that Nadal played both matches in the finals, I'd give him the edge.

On clay, everyone knows that Andre was a far better player, but in the H2H the dominance is not as overwhelming as 6-1 lead of Nadal. Nadal has an undisputable edge on clay.

As for hard, 2-2 is too few matches to tell, so I reserve judgement. And they never met on carpet, so no real comparison there.

So sure, maybe it's not an "ownage" other than clay, but the fact is that Andre didn't really "own" Pete on any surface. So to me at least, Nadal has clearly been the more successful rival.

Of course you are right.
It's no guarantee that Roger will ever reach the final of RG again - same can also be said about Rafas chances to reach the Wimbledon final -, but I was talking about the outcome of their last encounters against each other in Paris and Wimbledon.

nadal is only 21. He has many chances to win wimbledon and other slams.
