Why would Nike go through the trouble of creating customized clothing for him with his own logo if he was going to be leaving them? I'll bet Fed stays, but IMG will squeeze whatever they can out of Nike. Won't be anywhere near Tiger Woods territory but more than what they're paying him now.

Um, all the more reason to. If he was leaving them, they would want to use him to market their products as much as they can before that happens. Custom products don't cost that much to make, either

it doesnt matter, tennis is still played by a lot of people in the US, like soccer, every kid here plays it, but they dont watch it as much, but they do see #1 player wearing Nike, so they go buy it. every public tennis courts where i live are full from 5pm to rest of the night, some people are good some really suck but they like to play, they dont have to watch it, nike doesnt care about that..they care about selling their brand.

also ESPN needs to hire roger more

This was discussed openly during the USO broadcasts in the US. The contract will expire before the end of the year and, depending who you believe, there are strong indications that Roger will leave Nike for another clothing company, but he will continue to wear nike shoes. Or, IMG will go all out in the negotiating sessions and win Roger exactly the contract he wants.

Stay tuned, that's all I can say. But this could be a great place to gather all of the unsubstantiated rumors we can find on those internets.

Lacoste has a classic tennis clothing line. They've been making tennis clothes for ages now. Collared shirts are just a kick back to the old retro classic style, nothing wrong with that. Better than being a Nike/Adidas clone.

Roddick would look much better in the lacoste if he wore something other than white or black polo/white shorts for more than 5 matches out of a year. Lots of colors, etc. to choose from, he just doesn't use it... its boring. :(

It would be cool if Roger was with a different clothing line than most players...but those will struggle to pay him the big $$$ :)

Adidas is the best followed by Under Armour, Ellesse and Tacchini.

Fila tennis gear is really bad, I remember those shorts Schuttler and them all used to wear, too small for them. Not well fitting, and they had the same kind of style red top for a couple of years :o

If indeed there is an offer on the table from Polo, I don't think that's so bad. There are pros and cons I can think of for Roger switching over to Polo. But, Nike will try to keep him especially as they've just started with the Tiger/Roger ads....and Roger walking away from that promotion would be no. 1 on the "Con's" side of the list.

Federer's nike contract may not be about the money, just like Agassi's final contract wasn't. Nike let Agassi walk away, I see no reason why they wouldn't let Roger go if the terms don't suit the company. He's a tennis player, and as popular as he is, he is not a major sports star in most countries where other sports are more popular (especially the US). This will come down to a cost/benefit decision by Nike.

09-21-2007, 11:23 AM
Nike would be crazy to let the biggest tennis player the game has ever seen walk away. Thats like letting letting Michael Jordan head off to Adidas (which almost happened at the beginning of his career until they interevened). They make the best techinical apparel and shoes without question, the best marketing and its a brand that everyone knows and is aware of, regardless of sport specifics. Lacoste? pleeeease...

Federer / Nadal is the new Agassi / Sampras of nike tennis athletes for them, and with the Olympics coming up, they'd need their heads read to ruin that global opportunity...

Agassi was towards the end of his career when he walked away (or Nike let him go). But I agree Fed's certainly not the most popular 'star' Nike has so if he (or IMG more likely) play hardball Nike might just say 'see ya'. I still think at the end of the day they will work something out.

How do you that impression?

Well...I can only speak from the Nike promotional ads I have personally seen where I live...i.e in Asia and Europe.

In both places generally all the Nike group ads (with multiple athletes) have Rafa instead of Roger representing tennis. It's often the same in the poster ads in sport shops as well.
On the regional Nike websites Ive found it very difficult to find anything about Roger and Nike, or at least this was the case the last time I checked it out. Whereas Rafa comes up very easily on the official Nike sites.

So hence my impression that while all those who follow tennis might know that Roger is sponsored by Nike...all those who follow Nike, may not necessarily see him as the main face of Nike tennis.

Its only very very recently that I've seen an advert with Roger in the athlete group as well (where he's wearing grey and white I think)...and of course the recent tiger-roger video ad (which incidentally has not anyway been shown outside of north america I think).
