My vote is the 2007 Australian Open semifinal: he was simply magical that night:worship: But very close behind come the 2004 US Open final, the 2005 Wimbledon final and the 2006 Shanghai final;)

Fed-Hewitt USO 2004

Looking at the polls people seem to vote for Rogi's best performance rather than most important match in his career.

If I go by the poll question than I believe that Rogis most significant match was his 2003 Wimbledon SF win against Roddick. That was his biggest win and most probably shut most people who doubted that he could play and win the big matches. His H2H was better but people didnt believe he could step up in the big moment and Roddick was the overwhelming favourite to win Wimby that year. I believe that win was what really propagated his career

I think his biggest match was the one versus Sampras in Wimbledon. It was sort of his breakthrough. 'Changing of the Guards' as the BBC said very poeticly... :)

I agree with you. The AO 2007 was (and remains) certainly my favorite to watch because "dancing Roger" was on full display. On the Charlie Rose interview, Roger states the 2007 Wimbledon final was the biggest win of his career. (I think I have that right).

I think AO 07 SF is somewhat overrated. Roddick was absolutely awful, all Roger had to do is punish his mediocre approach shots.

Rodick was awful. Prior to the match, there was all this build up in the US about how the gap between them was closing and Roddick was going to give Roger all this trouble. Watching that match as a Federer fan was oh so satisfying.

i read this poll as :Most significant, or most important?

i would go with federer roddick wimbledon 2004, and federer nadal wimbledon 2007

in terms of best match...no doubt. federer - hewitt 04

fed was just ON FIRE.

best performance in big match-Federer vs Hewitt(to wim 3 out of 4 slams for the first time), but Wimby 05 and AO 07 vs Roddick were also very special

Agree with both.

I voted for the final against Hewitt at USO.

I think the QF in USO 2004 against Agassi amd Wimbledon 2007 final are also two of his best big matches...due to what I think they represent.

Wimbledon 2004 final against Andy R was also an excellent match, which was also the real turning point in their 'rivalry' which never was.

How do you interpret the meaning of big match? Is it about the significance in Rogers career or about the quality of his performance?
There are three matches mentioned in the poll I won't consider as a big match at all: Last years Wimbledon match against Bj÷rkman, this years Wimbledon match against Gasquet and the US Open match against Roddick. Therefore two matches are missing which I would rate as far more important: Both Wimbledon finals against Nadal which were so completely different. Although they were played on Rogers prefered surface we shouldn't forget the match-up issue between them and the fact that Roger suffered in each case a loss against him in Roland Garros only a few weeks ago.

I couldn't just name one or two matches which stand out as the most important ones. The victory against Sampras was a hint, the Wimbledon SF 2003 against Roddick was a door-opener, the final against Phillippoussis the breakthrough, the match against Agassi at the TMC the coronation and the US Open performance against Hewitt a magic moment.

Okay what I meant in this poll was which big match (in a Grand Slam or TMC) Roger played his very best tennis, his highest level of play:) He played awesome in 2006 Wimbledon semifinal (I admitt Bjorkman wasn't a top player, but still Roger's tennis was ON), and his level of play against Roddick in 2007 USO was fantastic as well... I don't think Roger played his very best tennis in the last 2 Wimbledon finals, but in terms of importance in his career, yes they were definitely among the most important ones... But this poll is about Roger's BEST tennis in a big match:).

2003 Wimbledon Semi final against Roddick. I was stunned, shocked and awed during it, and so thankful after it. Will never forget that. 2004 USO final against Hewitt comes a very close second.

Personally I will always prefer his matches in earlier stages when he played with more visible passion and energy and improvisation, though I always love watching him play.

His match against Nadal will never be one of his best matches tennis-wise, no matter how tough and thrilling it is...But of course if he can seal a win in RG, it will be the sweetest and probably the biggest match in his career.

Quality wise. US OPEN 2004. I haven't seen Federer play any better than this or close to this level since Masters cup '06 SF'S and Final as well as Aussie '07 semis. So it could well be a two way tie with US OPEN '04 Final and Masterscup final of '06 or perhaps a three way tie with these two and the aussie open '07 semis.

Now in terms of significance I could say it's certainly a two way tie, Wimbledon '03 semis and the Wimbledon '01 round of 16 without these two matches along with winning the masters cup that year getting rid of his demons Agassi, Nalbandian, Ferrero et al, he would not be the champion he is today.

I can never forget the way he demolished Roddick in that first Wimbledon Semi Final in 2003...

what made it better was at the time, even though fed was 3-0 v Andy, everyone was making Andy the fave to win Wimbledon.....

but that day, Roger showed them and the rest of the world no one can play like him.

remember that swinging half volley winner at SP in the 2nd set? :inlove:

Big Pete Lundgren was laughing his ass off.

also cant forget that 01 match v Sampras when he serve volleyed alot more and beat the great man.

An incredible shot, maybe about a couple of feet from the net, he took it right off of the bounce. Someone should put it up on YouTube.

AO '07 vs Roddick. Just Awesome, whether or not Roddick made it easy for him, Rogers tennis was to die for. Sadly have never seen USO '04 against Hewitt. Was actually on a plane on way to Australia. When I got there I asked a few people who had won, nobody knew! and Hewitts an Aussie!

federer's mental toughness and 5-set grittiness will become more apparent as the years go by.

Federer has one problem: he mostly plays 5-setters against great players. 5 of the 7 5-setters he played since he became no.1 were against Nadal (3 times), Safin and Agassi. He's won 3 and lost 2. Not bad. His only bad loss the last 4 years was Nalbandian and he was simply not physically ready for that match. I expect his 5-set record to improve when he starts playing 5-setters against mediocre players.
