There is no contest here. Guillermo Vilas is clearly much greater. Vilas's achievements in 1977 alone are more impressive than Rafter's accomplishments throughout his entire career.

TennisGrandSlam mate:wavey:
i like you & i like your posts:cool:
...
but this thread is completely unneccesary;) ,~you know the answer b4 you`ve asked it~~ no brainer VILAS is atleast twice as great as Rafter:angel:

even though I`m Aussie i consider Rafter`s career to be overrated & was honestly surprised when he was voted into the tennis hall of fame, personally i don`t think he deserves that much of an honour [though b2b USO titles was cool]

Vilas is a pioneer who won 3/4 Slams & stacks of titles, of course he deserved #1;)

Rafter is one of great players! His S&V skill is better and more classic than Sampras'.

Ok I'll play along, I vote Rafter.

This should have been a public poll so we could name and shame.

Is this a joke? or is the threadstarter just looking for attention. To even mention Vilas with Rafter in the same breath is ludicrous to say the least.

Yeah but Vilas hasn't won an Oscar for his Bond's ads.

Isn't this pretty obvious. Of course Vilas was greater. Rafter had a beautiful game, but he didn't really win that much. 11 titles is not very much. Besides, many of those 11 titles were won in quite a small tournaments(s'Hertogenbosch, Chennai, Manchester).

Rafter is one of my favourites, but he will lose this poll.

Rafter is like the weakest World No. 1 ever.

Rafter is like the weakest World No. 1 ever.

Rios was a weaker #1 than Rafter;)

Rios only ever made the SFs of a Slam once [AO 98]:p
Rafter got to atleast the SFs of every Slam [FO 97(SF), USO 97 & 98(won), Wimbledon 00 & 01 (finalist), AO 01 (SF)]

Even if we were to take Vilas's 43 claycourt titles out of the equation, he has still won 19 titles away from clay, which is 8 more than Rafter won in total.

yeah a better comparison would be~~~

Vilas or Courier
[B]Rafter or Stich [similar careers, Rafter one more slam, Stich a few more titles]

Rafter vs. Stich is a bitch: Stich was by far the better player, yet Rafter has that extra Slam.

NO, I am not Rafter-tard.

I open the poll to show that the ATP Ranking system was not perfect in the past!

However, NO.1 is like championship, the World only remember the champion. Vilas missed the chance to be NO.1 due to unequal and black-box systems.

both are close calls~~ that`s why it would be a better thread:cool:

Vilas is well remembered~ especially in Sth America, where he basically began the tennis boom on that continent.. Of course he`s a legend of Argentina, & he has 4-Slams>> which are more important than #1:angel:

There are 23 ATP NO.1 players, but more than 40 GS winners since 1968.

Rafter is one of great players! His S&V skill is better and more classic than Sampras'.

Rafter was a great S & V player, still a poormans Edberg.
Sampras was just a server, 95% of the volleys he got from returns were weak head high putaways.

Vilas and Rafter show comparable contrary

Vilas has weaker-era Australian Open B2B, Rafter has stronger-era US Open B2B. (Rafter is Aussie, but never win Australian Open :o )

But Vilas won 16 singles titles in 1977 including Roland Garros and US Open (Double Slam, 3 slam finals in 1977). But he cannot get NO.1.

Rafter won only 11 singles titles in his career (less than Vilas did in 1977), but he jumped to NO.1 for 1 week in 1999.

The OP uses 900000 size font.

Vilas or Rafter which one had a better success rate in the clubs, would be a closer contest.
