As for Hanescu, don't know much about him but apparently he's just back from a long injury layoff, is not too shabby on clay and was probably motivated playing in front of a home crowd, so well done to the Romanian :clap2:

Hanescu accused Monfils of dirty tricks. He believed that he was faking injuries!

"I think Monfils was 100%; he always does these kinds of tricks", he said. "I played him twice already and he made the same kind of tricks and those times he won and was 100%. Today he was also good; he tried to make me nervous and make me make a lot of mistakes, but I was very focused and finally I won."

Hanescu dismissed the idea that the Frenchman was fatigued after his exploits which involved playing 7 matches in as many days.


"I don't think so", he insisted. "He is very strong and I've seen him play very strong matches with big players and I think for him 6 matches is not so tough."

I think Monfils might have really been a bit injured because he was already complaining about it at the beginning of the match. And he had already mentioned problems with his leg this week.

Now, his attitude was plain embarrassing during the match and very disrespectful towards Hanescu indeed - like "you're not really winning, I'm just not trying". I wouldn't say he was completely faking the injury, but he was pulling off a show for sure. I'd be pissed too if I were Hanescu.

Surprising, but a good stage for Hanescu to make his first ATP final.

Wasnt Monfils that got injured at Madrid, trying to catch a ball that was already called out?! Or something like that?!

i watched the match Monfils faked an injury imo, he gave up after he went down a double break in the first came back from the injury break to smash he ball 4 times into the net to lose it 6-2

with begin of the 2nd set all of a sudden he was jumping running and serving like nothing happened, Victor was focused and deserved it, made almost no mistakes served very well and converted his bps

Monfils did a great job just getting to the semi after qualifying and then beating Volandri in rd 1. I don't think he was faking anything, why would he? Hanescu was wrong to suggest it IMO.

Speaking to a couple of people who watched the match, they thought it was pretty blatant.

It depends on what you mean with "faking". I don't think he was entirely making up the injury because he was already complaining about it in the very first games of the match. There was no point in faking an injury at that time.

But no way he was injured to the point of not being able to play, and that's how he was acting for good parts of the match, going back to his seat while Hanescu was still serving and this kind of embarrassing stunt. Making sure everybody had gotten he was having a problem instead of trying to get over it and focussing on the match. I can understand Hanescu's reaction, it was very annoying.

Not sure it's always meant as a dirty trick to disturb the other guy coming from him, it looks more like a general attitude issue.

Gutted for Gael - thought he would win here and take the title.
