Outstanding performance by Hanescu. His serving was unbelivable and it wasn't just bombs and he didn't face a break point in the match.

Starace played well, but Lurch was too strong on serve and finally got his deserved break of serve.

impressive tournament for Victor :yeah: beating easily Montañes and now Starace, of course the motivation of the local crowd is the X-FACTOR for him

The announcer was very excited after the match and it's good to see a local in the semis and Victor had a difficult 2006 with injury and has shown some good form in the challengers.

Last time I saw Hanescu at the Australian Open against Coria, quite bluntly, he wasn't very impressive, but his serve was decent. Good to see he's playing better now, but a real shame for Potito.

Not at all Starace wasn't good enough to win today. He defended well and saved break points with good play. His inside out forehand was very good and volleyed well.

He was beaten by the better man on the day pure and simple.

Well done to Hanescu for an impressive display. It's always nice to see players doing well at their home events.

Didn't get to the quarter final of the French Open for nothing.

Didn't get to the quarter final of the French Open for nothing.

He played some bloody good tennis at that RG. Chela, Horna and Nalbandian in a row are very good wins for an unseeded guy and he played well in the last 2 sets against Federer.

R128 Tabara, Michal (CZE) 92 6-2 4-6 6-2 6-1
R64 Chela, Juan Ignacio (ARG) 7-5 6-1 3-6 7-5
R32 Horna, Luis (PER) 6-3 6-4 6-4 Stats
R16 Nalbandian, David (ARG) 6-3 4-6 5-7 6-1 6-2
Q Federer, Roger (SUI) 2-6 6-7(3) 3-6

Quick Vic is back! That RG route through was amazing, I shouldn't think Federer would have fancied playing any one of the three South Americans he beat to reach the quarters against him. The last two in particular, of course.

Horna and Nalbandian, well Roger was definitely happy to play Lurch in that QF when it could have been one of those two.

Yes, I was surprised he came through the match with Horna, so easily.

I was surprised enough he got past Chela in 4.

The Nalbandian match was great. It kind of reminded me of the Gaudio - Nalbandian 2004 semi-final, when Nalbandian crumbled in the last set.

Hanescu played great and sounds like he is getting back to good form.

"I played very good, my game was very solid and also yesterday I played well. It was a very good game", Hanescu said.

Hanescu played like someone ranked much higher and certainly made a mockery of his wildcard status.

"I was injured for a long time and last year I didn't play for almost 8 months; that's why my ranking dropped", he explained. "This year I was forced to start from 700, playing small tournaments - challengers, which is why I need a wild-card here."

Looking ahead to the match with Monfils, Hanescu said: "It's going to be a tough match for sure. I lost two times against him. He has a very strange [type of game]; he can play everything, he can run so good. You never know [how he is going to play]."

"I'm feeling good here in Bucharest my home town and the crowd was very nice today", he added.

I didn't see the Chela match, but I thought the Chubby one would be a bit too solid, but Victor for a tall man can defend quite well and he is a strange one in that he is very tall, but he is more timing than power.

My friend was at the Horna match and "Lurch" served very well at the important points like the 30 all points and only lost serve once. It makes sense as Horna is a poor returner and he fucked up on 2nd serves. He said it was a good match.

Nalbandian didn't have an injury problem against Lurch, just couldn't handle the good shots and Hanescu has good feel for a big guy.

Hanescu's serve sucks for his height. Anyway, good to see form from another Romanian. Now they have a very real chance of staying in the DC WG next year.

Gu, you'd have loved some of the Hanescu volleys, he was hitting some very good touch volleys off good Starace shots.

Lurch is 198cm, but he isn't that strong, he got very good angles with his serve, but isn't the most powerful.

Well he has been injured for months and after he lost 1 and 0 to Roddick on clay, that was the last time he played in 2006.

Pity for Starace. Thought he would be the champion here. Looks like Monfils could win the title IMO.

The main thing I remember from Hanescu's RG run was the fantastic depth he had in his groundstrokes. Nalbandian was consistently digging balls from his shoelaces while running around the backcourt.

Although I'm not too fond of Hanescu's game, it's good to see the sly big man back in business.

I was at the match and Victor definetly exceeded my expectations!!! He was so solid, didn't gave Potito any chance (btw Potito's dropshots were terrible today. I don't think I saw him win a point with that shot)
