Who do you think will win this game? Mayer is a very interesting newcomer who had very good results on clay this season. Hopefully they will show this game on TV. :)

So I say Mayer.

MAYER in 4 sets

yeah, let's go Mayer!!! :clap2: :yeah:

that would be a nice win for Mayer, although I liked Escude from the beginning when I started to follow tennis and I think he even looked better with his bald head as I saw his match against Roddick in Indian Wells ;)

but I hope Mayer can take another win here :)

I'd say Escude in 4 :p
I don't like the French man but he is on my Fantasy Tennis Team as he was quite cheap :p :p

I like escude, but, he sucks on clay, and clay is mayer's favorite surface.

So I think mayer will win in 3 or 4

If Mayer takes out Gonzalez in 4, he will take down Escudé in 3 maybe 4. I saw a bit of the match against Fernando, and I must say I really like Mayer :) It was the first footage I had seen of him and I could become a fan :)

I think Escude has a good chance, being at home and I suspect Mayer will have a letdown

Mayer will flatten Escude. Then he will play and beat Youzhny, and then he will play Coria in the fourth round and cause the shock of the tournament by knocking him out!!!!!!!!!

I have a feeling Scud could edge this match. Is Mayer not serve and volley? Escude is a very awkward player for anyone and espcecially awkward if you want to get to the net. 4 sets Escude.

Mayer is in trouble right now :o

Is Mayer not serve and volley?
no he isn't... he is mixing his game, but he is not trying to serve and volley every time

I hope he wins even though he isn't in my fantasy team! I like Nick - he's a good player. Best of luck to you and your team.

Btw - what is your team called? Maybe you'd like to join my subleague - Support Greg Rusedski? ;)

I´d like to see Mayer win, but on the other side I wish that Escude wins the third and last set so that Eurosport can show Henin-Hardenne´s match;)...sorry

Flori lost 3-6 4-6 4-6

Florian was killed by Escudé whose serve and volley game was poison for Mayer and his style.
Escudé played a very good match and served well, Mayer could not deliver another performance as he did against Gonzo. Escudé's style was too different and too good.

Justine:
1st serve speed average: 160 km/h
fastest serve: 176 km/h
height: 165 cm

Florian:
1st serve speed average: 172 km/h
fastest serve: 187 km/h
height: 195 cm

Andy Roddick:
1st serve speed average: 192 km/h
fastest serve: 216 km/h
height: 187 cm

If you look at the stats you can see what Mayer has to improve in his game, he is a man and about 30cm taller than Justine but he is hitting just a few km/h faster than Justine :banghead: :banghead: and compared to the best serve in this tournament (Roddick) Mayer is outgunned by about 20 to 30 km/h in comparison to Roddick.

That difference ist just too big, a player of his height has to serve better and get stronger in this category. I hope he will improve because the rest of his game looks promising even though he had no chance today against Escudé.

Mayer has to get physically stronger.

Mayer showed his inexperience, but showed his talent. His strokes are so effortless, the commentators said he definetly will be someone for the future. What Im worried about is his mental state, as before with Haas and Kiefer, German tennis had two of the most talented players, who just were too mentally instable  . As Neely said he may have to strengthen himself, but not at cost to his game, plus he may have another catter, he gifted Escude the match, after dominating open play in the third set by making too many errors. Apparently hes very very shy, I hope this doesnt lead to him being one of the haas's or the kiefer's who had tragic amounts of talent but very little amounts of mental conviction. I hope he can do something in his future, I sincerely hope so. German tennis does have some hope, lets hope he doesnt crumble under that pressure.

He's played so well against Gonzalez, so I thought he could win that one too :banghead:
But he really has to get stronger - physically

He's only a youngster, give him some time, people! Anyway, tennis is so unnoticed by people over here now, I don't think he'll come under the pressure that Kiefer and Haas had to deal with it when they emerged as new talents. Then the shadow of Boris Becker was still over German tennis.

Is Mayer really 195 cm?
hm, I'm not sure, but actually he looks quite tall, he was for sure taller than Escudé and in the ATP player profile he is listed as 195cm. Although I'm sure not all profiles are 100% exact, I expect him still being over 190cm

I think he must have more potential to improve his serve and get phyiscally stronger, but as Haasfan said, it may not be at cost on his game and you have to find a sort of "middle course".

No, Mayer is not 195 cm because I was just next to him after his 1st round quallie versus Mazarakis ans he was a bit shorter than me (I am 192cm).

thanks for the info, then he must be between Escudé's size and 192cm

Neely, his serve is not bad AT ALL , 172 km per hour is a very good speed, you would be very surprised to see how many players do not crack 170 km per hour, coria is always around 158 160, corretja, costa, chela (who is taller than mayer I think, or the same height) who do not have bad first serves serve around 167 168, escude and henman, 2 serve and volleyers serve more or less at the same speed of mayer, around 177 km per hour, Andy serves so fast because he is a freak, you cant just expect mayer to serve as fast as roddick because he is tall.

His serve is not a problem, a liability, + it was a match on clay, mayer's favorite surface, I did not see the match but I bet it was not a factor.

Anyway, I dont doubt he could improve his first serve %, placement, and speed a little too.

Escude's past performances on clay have left a lot to be desired in the past, so I'm surprised with the result and the ease with which he achieved it.

And as for Mayer, he may well very well disappear into the Tennis Abyss come the grass court season and subsequent US hardcourt swing. It's a hard tour out there even for the most talented of players, as we all know.

baselinesmash, after wimbledon there are many clay tournaments, bastad, gstaad, kitzbuhel, stuttgart, umag, sopot, that tournament in the netherlands, if mayer feels like playing on clay he will have plenty of places to do it.

BaselineSmash

True. I often forget those tournaments because of the severe lack of (Eurosport) coverage in Britain.

I agree with you, maybe I exaggerated a bit because Escudé served so well and got many many easy and free points of it and you saw that difference in the match how easy it can bet to make points. Mayer's serve is for sure okay and it was wrong from me to measure the effectiveness of his serve only by his speed. Speed is not everything, especially on clay.

Okay, then let's say that Mayer has more potential concerning his serve. Just look at Coria or Gaudio, I've seen quite a lot of their matches during the last weeks and for me it looked as if they both (slightly) improved their serves. If 175cm guys can do it, there must be a way that a around 190cm player can do it, too.

For me, it's the same with Alex Popp. He is so tall, but his serve is not that weapon it could be.
