A Crisis in TV coverage!

Folks, we've got a problem.
I'm watching the French Open this morning (for me, on ESPN2 in New Jersey), and I can't belive what is on the screen. First of all, there's the ESPN graphic in the upper right hand corner. Slightly annoying, but its small, see through, and you tend not to notice it too much- OK I can live with that. Second of all, they've got that running text graphic at the bottom of the screen that we've all reluctantly come to accept on this channel and many others. Very annoying and hard to ignore, with the bright white words racing past just under the players and the baseline (we're talking about tennis remember). Now, that might never go away, it is a sports channel and other sport fans might need other scores. Whatever. Now, the last point I want to make and I hope you'll agree is an insult to tennis fans and viewers in general and an absolute perverse display of the stupid decision making going on in boardrooms. People, i'm talking about the big black score box they are currently placing in the upper left hand corner of our screens. It ain't small either. I gives the entire score, all sets and the currnet game. Sounds convenient doesn't it? Well, its not. Think about it. They do this during LIVE play! Why in Gods name can't they stick it in BETWEEN play during the replays and shots of the crowd, before commercials, and anything else. Not only that, but after the point, they take it OFF the screen during the replay and put it back on during live play!!! Does this make sense to anyone? If anything they've got it ass backwards. In one word its pathetic. Plus the broadcasters give the score during their commentary anyway! What happened to the nice little "15-30" game score before the serve and "total" game score before commercials or AFTER the point.
Ladies and Gentleman, if your like me you watch tennis because you want to do just that: WATCH tennis! Its not only ESPN, its happening on other stations as well during other tornaments. Where and when will it stop? When an entire half of the court is covered. A small corporate logo: ok, thats understandable, but the rest has got to go. I urge you, please, to email ESPN like I did and tell the "suits" who don't know a raquet from a frying pan to do the right thing and get that crap off of the LIVE play. Its too damn much. I'm a patient man, but not this patient. Please post your comments, but also contact these networks. I know its a pain and takes time, but if they don't hear it they won't do anything about it. Thanks!

i agree, they copied eurosports way of scores. I think it's dumb, the set score goes horizontal? what's up with that

Deboogle!.
05-25-2004, 03:46 PM
yea..... ESPN's coverage is just horrible. I love that they showed Roger and then Clement/Santoro but now it's pushing EVERYTHING to taped matches. Venus and Serena are both finished with their matches and we'll get both of those in full and Martina is midway through her match too. I'm off to write them a nasty email, not that it'll do any good.

I think they get the european feed and just put their logo on the scores. I'm not sure, but I think that is the way of it.

I think we have a bigger problem with delay-live match than having those annoying pops on the screen.

Oh yes, Eurosport always have live scores in the upper left corner! I got used to it!

no I'm pretty sure ESPN gets their own cameras. TTC uses European feed sometimes, I think, but the ESPN commentators are actually there and are on camera and stuff, plus they have the ShotSpot which has sponsors, etc. The new scoring has the ESPN logo on it so I'm blaming them :p Plus people yesterday said that they showed Lauren during Andy's match and ESPN did not (that I saw anyway).

okay, let me say something about that.

1. First of all, I think that these little score boxes in the the upper left or right of the screen are the best invention of TV tennis broadcasts since long time. How often did I come home, tune in right in the middle of the match and I didn't know the overall score. But now I just have to take one glance at the score box and know immediately the score of the whole match.

2. I agree that they shouldn't take the score box away when showing replays (BTW, I notice that often during soccer broadcasts as well)

Plus the broadcasters give the score during their commentary anyway! What happened to the nice little "15-30" game score before the serve and "total" game score before commercials or AFTER the point.
3. I'm glad that the nice little "15-30" before the serve doesn't pop up anymore. It depends on the TV station and on their graphics layout, but mostly it has disappeared and I'm glad about it because it was not informative enough. Furthermore, I don't appreciate it when the commentators give the score too often. Maybe sometimes, but not too often. I also don't like commentators who are speaking too much, I think they should also be quiet from time to time to let the viewers watch the game and make their own thoughts.
The "total game score" after a completed game or before the commercial breaks still exists, at least on Eurosport and on most other TV stations.

OK Apparently ESPN is sharing feed with French TV, so at least I was right that it wasn't Eurosport :p

and I agree Neely, I kind of like the score always up in the corner. But as for commentators speaking too much, I suggest you never see an ESPN broadcast from the US :o

Espn better show some of Coria's match tomorrow... back to dissing espn, two commentators i don't like are Drysdale and Carillo. Last year, Carillo said that she couldn't believe agassi would have any trouble with Coria, even though Coria was a hamburg champion!!! In fact, my fantasy tennis team is named carillo's dumb

Deboogle!.
05-25-2004, 08:10 PM
Neely, all they do is TALK TALK TALK.

I doubt ESPN will show much of Coria, his match is on first and will be over by the time the "live" tv coverage starts. Unless they screw it all up for the third day in a row and just have taped stuff all day  :o

lol yea it's pretty frustrating. Sometimes they're funny. I like Mary Carillo. but PMac and Mal Washington are just unbearable! I like the addition of Dick Enberg though, but they pretty much all talk too much, even the half-decent ones. I guess I'm just kinda used to it.

The commentators are a bit of piss offs sometimes in what they say. A part of being a commentator is to have the ability to hold back some things. Like Patrick McEnroe?! He's normally ok, but how he was virtually declaring that Guga was going to be upset by that up-and-comer was just downright cheap! Sorry, but Guga won just a half-hour before me writing this!! Guga showed them alright! Drysdale is good though, and Enberg.

The coverage here in Latinamerica is exclusively for menīs matches... I was sad because I couldnīt watch Jennifer Capriati.. not even 1 fukkking game!! and they showed all Caņas vs GAudio match...

I hate Caņas and GAudio!!!!

on espn i've seen about 15 minutes of live coverage of today's capriati match...that was it. everything else i've tuned in for has been taped

05-25-2004, 11:25 PM
I wish the williams sisters, capriati, roddick and agassi would all lose in the first round, that way i could see some good tennis for the rest of the tournament on TV

Deboogle!.
05-25-2004, 11:39 PM
If they all lost in the first round ESPN would be in SUCH shock that they'd just keep showing reruns of all the matches.

Plus almost half of ESPN's coverage today featured non-Americans. First Roger's match and then the entire end of Clement/Santoro. Too bad it was all taped or I'd have been really impressed. And tomorrow they're showing Justine and many more non-American players... so, it *could* be worse.

I wish I had ESPN and cable to bitch about it too :(

Well, just have to wait until NBC's shitty weekend coverage. Glad to get some highlights on the news. So far:

Yesterday: Blurb that Agassi went out 1st Rd. Shocker!
Today: Venus and Serena won, Martina N. lost (no footage), but *very* happy they mentioned and showed footage of the Santoro match, "two Frenchmen played the longest match in Open history".

NBC has worse coverage than Espn, sorry tennis fool. i know there was some good tennis today bunk, but if the williams sisters were out, i'd have seen more good tennis. think about it? They didn't show any of the Ferrero or Kuerten or Hewitt matches.

I don't mind the scorebox at all. I actually like it. It gives me the score right away in a convenient, cohesive fashion.

Yes but the scorebox should read have the set score in the form:
6 6
2 2

not
2 6
2 6,

that's just dumb the way they do it

gbpgbp20: I HAVE FOLDED TO YOUR WILL!!! YOU ARE "THE ONE"!!!!! Oh God that stupid scoreboard is ludacris!!! My bro was lookin at that shit today and was like "what's wrong with the score?". It was during the V. Williams vs Tanasugarn match. I said "Oh I figured that one out yesterday. It's 2-6, 3-4, not 2-3, 6-4." He stopped for a sec...."Ooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. That's stupid!" "Yeah I know." See, folks who don't KNOW about American ESPN don't understand!!! Today during the Santoro/Clement match, 5 SETS NOW!!! THINK ABOUT THAT!!! The score looked like THIS:
6-4
6-3
6-7
3-6
16-14
NOTE: You still have the names or the players on this box AND the game points. SO:
San/Cle
6-4
6-3
6-7
3-6
15-14
40-15
Damnit! If a ball was hit deep in the left corner, you can't SEE if it was in or not. You can't see if/how the player got to it. That's insane!!! Now if it was like what gbpgbp20 is saying:
6 6 6 3 16
4 3 7 6 14
That would've been cool, cuz it's not going vertically down the screen, but instead across the screen so you can still see the intire court. But damn, ESPN done fucked up I swear. It wasn't like that in the AO!! Why'd they change it? *sighs* Carillo is the worst thing since......Gummie Jolly Ranchers. I swear. She thinks she knows soooooooooooooooooo much. OH MY GOD!!! Lord have mercy she was a bitch during the quarterfinal of the USO last year, Agassi vs Coria. Golly fucking gee. Man I was glad she didn't commentate the Nally vs Roddick match. And yeah, they better show some (I'd perfer ALL) of Guille's (Seb :p) match tomorrow. His match is FIRST ON CENTER COURT! They said they're gonna show Moya and :bounce: MAURESMO!!!!!!!! :bounce: too. hehehehe. Ok, I'm rooting her to win this bit.

Deboogle!.

Guille's match will be over (either that or Guille will be in trouble lmfao) by the time tv coverage starts, so either it'll be all taped tomorrow AGAIN, or they won't show it... guess we'll find out.

And the scoring doesn't bother me at all, not even during the Clement/Santoro match.... guess it just depends on how your eyes process things. It's not ludicrous to me at all though

Me too; otherwise I have no chance to watch Federer, Ferrero, Kuerten, Coria or Moya.

Leo
05-26-2004, 02:17 AM
They showed Roger today? But why, his match wasn't remotely competitive! Wouldn't it have been better to show the defending champion facing a talented and challenging opponent in a 4-set entertaining match instead? At least they did show some of the 16-14 epic, I hear, so I look forward to watching that later on tape.

Back to the topic of this thread, I agree. I don't read tennis set scores horizontally like that. It's downright confusing. I don't understand why they feel the need to tinker around with the scoreboard since it looked perfectly fine beforehand and they did show it often enough (briefly after every point). Most importantly, it was not a visual distration during the points.

Deboogle!.
05-26-2004, 02:21 AM
yes Leo right at the top of their coverage, and because they showed it taped, then they had to show Clement/Santoro taped. They could've shown that LIVE, which would've been soooooo much more exciting... but nooooo.... so then the whole rest of the day was all taped too because they did the same thing as Monday when they showed Agassi's match from the beginning instead of just cutting into it.

I'm pissed that I didn't get any coverage of the Ferrero - Haas match here in Latin America  grrr..

I was waiting the whole f****** morning hoping they would show the match.
I mean Ferrero is the number 4 seed and Haas just recently won a clay title.
I was thinking this should be the best first round match next to the Calleri-Safin match. Why the hell didn't I see this match then?? :(

obviously showing the defending champ's 1st rd match is too much to ask... instead we get a repeat of Venus... ho hum...

05-26-2004, 05:27 AM
I agree. That 6pm ABC thing is just silly. I am actually lucky enough to have the pay channel which shows it, but I was thinking yesterday while reading Australian "legends" bemoaning the lack of Aussie clay talent that maybe if they showed the damn thing like they show all the other slams, more kiddies might be bothered to play on clay.

I want to add that the Dutch commentary on Eurosport is too sad for words. Yesterday evening, with the highlist program, the Dutch commentator said:

- Jennifer Capriati defeated Maria Shaparova (Not a slip of the tongue, he has done it before)
- And that there was a match in which a record was broken, namely: Federer - Santoro.

I am sure he made more mistakes after that, but then I tuned off. That guy is too incompetent for words. I wonder how they get those people to do those jobs??!
