Well look at it this way TBE, you won't be getting the early part of the Chatrier schedule anyway, because you'll be watching... Henman, who else, to start coverage of RG. Enjoy. (On a side note, I do think Saulnier has a pretty good chance of causing an upset there with the crowd behind him.)

Im looking forward to see how Agassi does, and Roddick v Martin is a hard court match on clay.

Wow even we don't get that for RG. For the first week we get uninterrupted 7 hours or so a day live coverage! Will be fascinating to see how ESPN screws it up of course, but at least on paper it looks good :o

I assume Agassi will get every match on centre court as each match is potentially his last at the FO but the fact that they couldnt find space for Coria v Davydenko on either of the main 2 courts is pretty embarassing, if this was the US Open, there would be scandals already

Maybe Agassi's cousin Charles Aznavour or Aznavourian the French singer was the guy who did the draw that Agassi got this year, making it likely that Agassi will get all centre court matches and a chance at the QFs.

If we could get Marcel Marceau doing commentary that would be great. I might read some encylopedias just for fun tomorrow.

actually, I think the matches on the courts are not that badly scheduled... I agree that there are some unlucky things but whatever you do there are pros and cons and I will give you some thoughts.

especially Davenport-Pichet
yeah, I totally agree, that's a bit weird, but it's every year the same that a lot of French players, even unknown players play on the big court(s), and at least she doesn't play against a nobody, but against Lindsay

And Carlos on court 2??? That's an insult to a former champion!
don't worry, we will see Carlos a thousand times again and again on Chatrier or Langlen... I believe he open the 1st round against Volandri last year also on Court 1 or 2, while Mauresmo and Razzano played on Chatrier and it was not really such an exciting match-up, but they played there because it were two French players.

Koukalova vs Golovin on Lenglen is also ridculous
yes, not such a thrilling match-up... but as Sjengster said Golovin is a rising star and just think of, for example, where Mayer and Portas played in Hamburg. On Centrecourt! And they scheduled guys like Henman vs Pavel or Nalbandian on M1.
If Hamburg sets Mayer vs Portas for Centrecourt, so I think it's also understandable if the young French player in France plays on the big court and some others have to pass.

I wouldn´t say that scheduling Mayer-Portas on CenterCourt in Hamburg is a smart move either! Of course I understand that every nation wants to feature their own players on the bigger courts, but we are talking about a GS here and I stay with my opinion that Koukalova vs Golovin on Lenglen is ridiculous while Coria and Moya have to play on Court 1 or 2. Court 1 would be big enough if they want to give "rising star" Golovin a big stage, and even that would be questionable in my eyes!

yes sure, just some thought from my side
anyway it's the 1st round with lots of matches and we will see these players hopefully soon playing cosistently on the big courts and if they lost in the 1st round they wouldn't have deserved to be scheduled on Chatrier either.
So Moya, Coria and ... and ... will play on the courts they deserve soon the less matches have to be played on one day :)

I liked what Jim Courier once said when the reporters tried to bait him into complaining aobut the courts where he was assigned. "If I keep winning, I'll play on the main court."

Organizers try to put matches on the main courts that they think will draw.

Coria played on one of the very SMALLEST courts at IW while more lowly ranked players were playing on bigger courts. I was grateful because I got to see him only a few feet away. It's nice sometimes to see the great players on the smaller courts. :)

For those of us with ESPN...does anyone honestly think we'll get to see anyone except the usual suspects tomorrow? Here's how I think it'll go: Roddick will be shown live and then they'll try to convince the viewing audience that Agassi's match is next (when it will actually be taped) and then by the time that Agassi's match is over, the coverage for the day will be done. Or, if it's not, they'll just go back and show a repeat of Roddick & Todd  .

I know that I should be giving the benefit of the doubt but with ESPN's track record for the last two years...I don't have much faith that they'll have the intelligence to show other matches. Especially if there's a more exciting one elsewhere.

Ok, that's my pre-venting ;) .

I'd think they'll show Lindsay too. Andre's match will probably be the late night taped coverage. I don't know what else they'll show. But with that much live coverage scheduled they're going to HAVE to show some other people they just HAVE to. What's unfortunate for us is that most of the Americans are in the bottom halves of BOTH Draws, so every day will be bad since they're alternating. Tuesday will be all Williams (and Martina) all day I'm sure.

Ah, but Roddick is last up on Chatrier so there's quite a substantial gap to be filled if they did go down that path. No, I suspect they'll just camp out on Chatrier and show all four matches there. True, you've got to show a non-American, but she is the world no. 1 and defending champion and then it's Agassi, Davenport, Roddick, Americans galore. There's no doubt that the top half of the draw is far more interesting, in terms of both seeded and unseeded encounters.

At some point ESPN should publish what matches they're showing.. then again they don't list all the matches they usually show, especially dealing with huge blocks of coverage.

It's gotta be better than AO, at least. With that we were lucky to get 2 hrs of live coverage a day, at least with RG we'll get several hours a day.

Because it hasn't always been like this. Nor was the coverage this bad when USA network had RG (matter of fact...USA was awesome!!). HBO did the best job with Wimbledon & even with TNT's commercial's their coverage of Wimbledon was decent. I get afraid every year that ESPN will outbid USA for the OPEN and then Tennis fans will really be screwed.

Also, there's always that slim hope that ESPN will listen and give the Tennis fans something to watch along with those people who think that Tennis only happens four times a year.

Personally, I'm tired of ESPN making it seem like every tournament is Davis Cup (i.e. we're supposed to root for Americans) instead of respecting Tennis as the International sport it is. Yes, I know other countries do it too and it doesn't make me any more agreeable about it.

Writing notes may not change anything in the immediate future but knowing that i'm putting my voice out there makes me feel better sometimes.

Katherine don't take this the wrong way, but even if ESPN's coverage were really good, I don't think a match like Alex's would ever be shown. I mean matches like Safin/Calleri, Haas/Ferrero, Coria/Davydenko, these matches should be shown by ESPN, but a match featuring two really low-ranked relatively unknown players is just unrealistic IMO. ESPN rarely even shows people like Blake, Fish, Ginepri, and Martin, all of whom have pretty good fanbases.

I do like Andy and Andre, but I don't like the Williams sisters at all so I understand how annoying it all is. But obviously EVERYONE can't have ALL of their favorites shown, especially live from a tournament where the time difference is at least 6 hours. I think 7 hours of scheduled live coverage tomorrow is quite generous.

The point is also that other countries HEAVILY feature their own players as well. My friends in Argentina get their home country players on tv when they play and they even get lots of repeats of these matches! It happens in Germany and Brazil and everywhere else too, I don't think it's that bizarre that all of Andy/Andre/Venus/Serena/Lindsay/etc.'s matches get shown - they just happen to be rather unpopular HERE at MTF. It's not ESPN's fault that there are more higher-ranked players on both the men's and women's sides in America than, say, from England. so England shows Henman and Rusedski but since there are only two players to show, they HAVE to show other players, but ESPN in the US gets the luxury of having two top players on the men's side and as many as 4 or 5 on the women's!

The best solution would be to do what USA did and feature the American players' matches but cut to other matches at important times for a few minutes. Then we'd mostly get to see the Americans but also at least parts of other matches too. I was watching an old USA FO match from 2001 last night and they cut to a few minutes of both Hewitt/Davydenko and Novak/Pioline and that was nice. The things like repeating taped matches instead of showing live matches featuring non-americans, ok I TOTALLY agree with how awful that is and ESPN is just stupid for doing that, but when they're picking a live match to air, I think you can hardly expect them to NOT choose the high-ranked popular Americans. There are two different issues though - the stupid stuff ESPN does like showing the taped American matches instead of good matches featuring foreigners and them showing American players' matches live. IMO the former is not ok but the latter is what happens everywhere and what should happen. The hometown stations SHOULD support the hometown players, that only seems right.

But I mean there's just no way to please everyone so they're just trying to please the most people they can, and that means showing the hometown boys. When you go to Thailand and it's Paradorn TV or Guga TV in Brazil or Henman TV in England or whatever, it never seems to be a problem. But when Evil ESPN shows the Evil Americans, it's this horrible thing. And it's that inconsistency and hypocracy that's really grating.

Katherine don't take this the wrong way, but even if ESPN's coverage were really good, I don't think a match like Alex's would ever be shown.

I wasn't talking about them showing Alex. Court 8 didn't even have a Netcam on it  . But, I do have other favorites that will not be shown. If I wasn't so frustrated at the moment I would find it humorous that this coverage should be accepted at face-value because that's just the way it is  . The basic gist of my email to ESPN was the fact that I had the feeling that their so-called "Live" Tennis would be taped. How prophetic was that? The sad part is that, in one day, this year's coverage is already worse than '03.

I think 7 hours of scheduled live coverage tomorrow is quite generous.

Is this one of the things that you take back? ;)

The point is also that other countries HEAVILY feature their own players as well. My friends in Argentina get their home country players on tv when they play and they even get lots of repeats of these matches! It happens in Germany and Brazil and everywhere else too,

And i said that too but that doesn't mean that one has to be happy about it or just sit back and accept it. Just because it happens in other countries doesn't make it ok for the States. As I said, I miss USA network's coverage. Their coverage is the reason for most of my favorites because I didn't have regular internet use until my late teens and it still wasn't easy then to keep up with it all. USA Network was never heavy on American coverage. I remember them being neutral and showing good matches regardless if it was a name playing or not.

The best solution would be to do what USA did and feature the American players' matches but cut to other matches at important times for a few minutes. Then we'd mostly get to see the Americans but also at least parts of other matches too. They're not out to please Tennis fans though, Deb. They only really care about those people that think that Tennis happens 4 times a year and they know the rest of us will watch while we complain because it's all we have. As I said, maybe if I was a supporter of Roddick like you and many others...I wouldn't have a big issue with ESPN either but I feel short-changed because they won't go to any outside court. Most of my favorites have been playing all day and do you know how many I saw on the TV? 0
